In the last few years, Korean films, TV dramas and pop music have become immensely popular abroad, a phenomenon known as the Korean Wave. Following is an email interview with Tom Larsen, president of YA Entertainment, the largest distributor of Korean TV drama DVDs in the United States. - Ed.

The Korea Herald: What is the current market position of Korean TV dramas in the U.S. market? How are they perceived in comparison with mainstream U.S., Chinese and Japanese programming?

Tom Larsen: Like most other TV programming from international markets, Korean TV dramas are generally considered a specialty entertainment niche here in the United States. His goofy smile, manly good looks and dynamic acting catapulted him to fame when he played a dopey student in the hit MBC drama "Cat on the Roof" in 2003. And now "Hallyu" star Kim Rae-won is joining the ranks of Korean Wave celebrities, alongside Bae Yong-joon, Jang Dong-gun and Lee Byeong-heon.

With a new Japanese movie out and the much-anticipated SBS drama "Sikgaek" on its way, the future is looking bright for Kim.

According to the Sankei Shimbun newspaper, "The actors who appeared prior to 2002 can be grouped as the first generation of Korean Wave stars, and the second generation are those who came out much later, including Kim Rae-won ..".

Stars who are anticipating entering military service are coming back with dramas at the end of the year. There is a big chance that their works in progress will be their last, because they can no longer push back military service.

Eric Moon will be playing Kang Chil-woo in the fantasy historical drama "Best Chil Woo". His character leads a double life, a law enforcement officer by day and leader of killers by night.

Eric Moon, who is negotiating the details, is planning to enter military service in September after the drama. The results of the drama are more important because he will enter the army shortly afterwards.

The drama "Best Chef" in Korea. Two movie premieres in Japan.

'There's no time to rest!"

It is expected that actor Kim Rae-won will be showing different sides of his charm in Korea and Japan. While filming the Korean drama "Best Chef", he will be premiering two movies in Japan. A representative of Kim Rae-won has said, "Two movies will premiere in Japan soon. On the 8th, "Hana Kage" (Director Kawai Hayato) and "Sunflower" (Director Kang Seok-beom) will premiere. "Hana Kage" will be premiering in Tokyo, Osaka, Sapporo, and other major cities, and will be a stepping stone for him to become a star of the Korean wave".

It is hard for Kim Rae-won to even show his face these days due to his filming of the drama "Best Chef". Because of this, the curiosity of fans is growing.
