By Han ang-heeStaff Reporter MBC is bringing the tale of Korea's first reigning Queen Seondeok to the small screen through its new drama "Queen Seon-deok' next week. Queen Seondeok was the first female to rule the nation, and the broadcaster of previous successful lineups, including "My Wife is a Superwoman", and "Beethoven Virus", will bring the life and struggle of the queen to viewers. As the drama takes place during the Silla Kingdom (668-935), the drama crew set their eyes on Gyeongju, North Gyeongsang Province, one of the most famous historical sites during the era in Korea. "It is the first time to bring a drama based on the Silla Kingdom, and we will strive to bring historical facts and stories that have never been shown through dramas", Park Hong-gyun, the producer, said at the press conference held at Gyeongju last week. Indeed, the franchise will use 25 billion won on production and almost half of it in the art department, from costumes and sets to props. Be...| More

Fifty-seven writers wrote a statement titled, "KBS, Rescue "Drama City"." They said, "There is no justification for the extermination of the one-act drama. Hit American television dramas are now being challenged by their Korean counterparts. Recently, a string of Korean dramas that include characters like federal investigators, police chiefs and emergency room doctors are appearing one by one. The dramas, being compared to the American dramas they modeled their plots around, are stirring up controversy and generating both negative and positive feedback.
On the one hand, some viewers say that these dramas present a fresh and innovative format. Others however, are criticizing the producers saying they are ripping off ideas and that these dramas lack quality. The producers defend themselves by saying that as Hollywood has been making dramas for decades, the subject matter and formats are bound to overlap with Korean dramas. They also said that the important thing to look for in these dramas is how they adapt American elements to fit Korea. Korean Network Television vs. American Dramas The MBC drama "H.I.T" (Homicide Investigation ...| More

Sodong (Jo Hyeon-jae), left, and Sataekkiru (Ryoo Jin) play rival technicians in "Sodongyo", a Paekche Kingdom drama on SBS.
'Sodongyo' Looks at Technological War During Paekche Kingdom By Park Chung-a Staff Reporter Producer Lee Byung-Hun and writer Kim Yeong-hyeon from "Jewel in the Palace (Dae jang geum)", last year's major hit drama here and in China, have again teamed up for a new historical drama. The SBS drama "Sodongyo", translated as "Sodong's Song", has much in common with "Jewel in the Palace". Both deal with similar themes: a success story of a lower class person rising to the top, a love that transcends social position, a secret of birth and a rivalry between main characters. However, whereas "Jewel" is set in the Choson Kingdom (1392-1910), "Sodongyo" takes place in the Paekche Kingdom (18 B.C. - A.D 660), a first for a TV drama. Aside from the romance between a princess and a commoner, an interesting part of the drama is that it focuses on a fierce techn...| More
By Kim Ki-tae Staff Reporter The fast changing media contents market is destroying longstanding barriers between filmmakers, broadcasters, talent management firms and mobile carriers. Film companies are beginning to make television dramas, while broadcasters are producing films. Talent management companies, riding on their rising "star power", are jumping into production projects. Meanwhile, mobile communication carriers are buying up companies that traditionally provided only content. "Television, theater, game, mobile phone and other media are converging in the name of digital technology", said Kan Han-seop, a professor at Seoul Institute of the Arts. "The entertainment market is now undergoing fundamental changes". According to industry insiders, burgeoning new media, like digital multimedia broadcasting (DMB) and satellite channels, require large, high-quality content and are therefore transforming the traditional contents market. In addition, the rising popularity of ...| More
