The 24th Santa Barbara International Film Festival kicks off this week with 3 Korean features invited to screen during 11-day run January 22 – February 1. In the International Features competition section, Kim So-yong's "Treeless Mountain" will have its U.S. premiere, vying for top honors along with 12 other features.

Data released by the Korean Film Council (KOFIC) on December 2, revealed a number of modest budgeted films in the top five of most successful films in 2008. However, the list is lead by the big budget blockbuster "The Good, the Bad, the Weird" by Kim Ji-woon. The kimchi western attracted 7.03 million viewers, undoubtedly, partly due to the presence of the stars Song Kang-ho, Lee Byeong-Heon, and Jeong Woo-seong.

The 29th Blue Dragon Film Awards will be held tomorrow at the KBS Hall in Yeouido, Seoul. The red carpet ceremony starts at 6:30 p.m.

Awards will be given in 15 different categories, including Best Film and Best Director.

Nominees for Best Film include "Seven Days", "Forever the Moment", "The Good, the Bad, the Weird" and "Crossing".

The Louis Vuitton Hawaii International Film Festival (HIFF) not only includes a kimchi flavoured western, but a rich variety of Korean tastes. The event will open with the U.S. premiere of "The Divine Weapon" from director Kim Yoo-jin, starring Jeong Jae-yeong and Ahn Seong-gi.
