Female presidents, bodyguards... 'Women Power'

It seems that the new keyword for 2008 will become 'women power'.

Female stars who received popularity for effeminate roles are now trying new characters, such as famous politicians, female bodyguards, and female detectives.

Ko Hyeon-jeong will be acting as Korea's first female president in her next drama, SBS "Big Things", set to air in May 2008.

Ko Hyeon-jeong's role of Seo Hye-rim is a passionate lawyer. She quits after taking responsibility for the arrest a political gang's leader, and becomes famous as a civil rights lawyer. She runs for office and is elected as a female president.

Ko Hyeon-jeong also acted as the first female chief of a police squad in the MBC drama "Hit". She is receiving roles that differ from her past image, and that are many "firsts" in the drama industry.

Also, Chae Rim will be coming back to television as a female bodyguard.

However, she was not alone in making the foundation on which the Korean film industry stands at the moment.

Since Kang Soo-yeon became the first Korean actress to win a major international award in 1987 with "The Surrogate Mother", the local movie industry has gone through dramatic improvement over the past 20 years.

Kang, then 21, was chosen best actress at the Venice Film Festival for her role as "Sibaji", a Korean word for surrogate mother, in the movie produced by Korea's master film director Im Kwon-Taek.

In 1989, Kang reaffirmed her global fame as she won best actress at the Moscow Film Festival for her role in Im's Buddhist movie, "Aje Aje Bara Aje", which translates into "Come, come, come upward".

Actress Ko Top Money Earner at KBS

Veteran actress Ko Doo-sim, famous for playing mother roles, was found to have earned the most money among all actors and entertainers who appeared on the KBS network last year.

The actress earned a little over 373 million won last year, according to a report made during the National Assembly inspection of the state-run television network.

Arirang TV to make inroads into the TV audience in East Europe with 'All In'

With Korean drama 'All In's encore broadcasting in Macedonia as a momentum, Arirang International Broadcasting is going to make inroads into the TV audience in East Europe.

'All In' starring Lee Byeong-heon and Song Hye-kyo, which Arirang International Broadcasting distributed to East Europe, untapped territory of Korean broadcasting program, is scheduled to be aired again from August by the request of Macedonia TV, a ground-wave broadcasting station in Macedonia.

Thanks to 'All In's popularity, whose encore broadcasting was decided in Macedonia, Arirang International Broadcasting intends to air 'All In' in Romania on September and is coming into contact with Croatia as well as Serbia-Montenegro ground-wave TV to air this program in these countries.
