The "sophomore slump" refers to when a second effort fails to meet the standards or expectations of the first. It affects bands, performers and artists of all types - and movie directors are no exception.

Six emerging Korean directors discussed the pressure and the anxiety they felt while making their second films, as well as the challenges of dealing with the changing landscape of filmmaking in Korea at "Open Talk No. 2" during the Pusan International Film Festival, which closed its nine-day run last Friday.

The six directors - Park Chan-ok, Lee Song-hee-il, Lee Seong-han, Lee Hae-joon, Kim Tae-sik and Kim Dong-won-I - first gained recognition for their debut features at previous Pusan film festivals, and returned to this year's event with their second works.

Korean films strongly recovered in May

CJ/CGV, Korea's leading cinema chain, announced a 49.1% domestic market share for Korean films in May. Of the 16,322,551 million visitors, 8,018,465 people bought tickets to a Korean film. It is the highest May record for Korean cinema since 2005.

Since 2005, the highest percentage for Korean films in May was in 2006 when Korean films captured a 36.1% market share. Last year May, Korean films accounted for merely 7.8% of the box office.

50% of the top ten most popular films were Korean. BONG Joon-ho's "Mother - 2009", PARK Chan-wook's "Thirst", SIN Tae-ra's "My Girlfriend is an Agent", LEE Hae-joon's "Castaway on the Moon", and PARK Hee-gon's "Insadong Scandal", in respective order.

New Movie 'Castaway on the Moon'

Get your handkerchiefs ready.
A new film sends us a message of hope through the story of two lonely hearts.
Mr. Kim is castaway on a deserted island and ends up meeting Ms. Kim, a recluse from society.
"Castaway on the Moon".
Mr. Kim takes the brunt of the economic recession and decides to take his own life.
But even that doesn't work out the way he planned and he finds himself on Bamseom island.
At first he tries to escape.
But his calls for help are ignored.
Soon enough he adapts to his new life, returning to the arms of nature.
And he even realizes his dreams of owning a new home.
To be castaway in the middle of a big city.
This almost absurd idea gathered a lot of attention from the beginning of production.

LEE Hae-joon films JEONG Jae-yeong's adventures and JEONG Ryeo-won

LEE Hae-joon is attempting his solo feature film directorial debut with the film "Castaway on the Moon", Kimssi pyoryoogi (English translation: "the adventures of Mr. KIM"). He previously co-directed the acclaimed "Like a Virgin" with LEE Hae-yeong.


The titular character will be played by JEONG Jae-yeong. JEONG's character runs to the Han River in Seoul to commit suicide, but it won't come that far. JEONG previously starred in JANG Jin's "Someone Special" and "Guns and Talks". He is currently in cinemas with "Public Enemy Returns" and "The Divine Weapon".

Mr. KIM's change of plans is due to another KIM, a woman played by JEONG Ryeo-won. JEONG was seen in last year's "2 Faces of My Girlfriend".

Filming started in late August. The film is scheduled for a release in next year.
