  • [HanCinema's Feature] Korea's Top Five Favorite Films of 2014

    2014/12/20,
2015 is nigh upon us, a fresh year with its own host of hits waiting to entertain and be enjoyed. There is still a little time before 2014 passes us by, and before it does I wanted to glance back and take stock of this year's most successful spectacles and see what rose to top in terms of ticket tallies. Last year Korean cinephiles were treated to an array of awesome attractions ("The Face Reader", "Snowpiercer", "The Attorney", "Miracle in Cell No.7"), but still Bong Joon-ho's 2003 hit "The Host" remained the nation's cash king with over 13M admissions. It would take something supremely special (historic) to rally such record-breaking support and slay this iconic stub-guzzler,...More
  • [HanCinema's Film Review] "The Fatal Encounter": K-King in a Cage + Watch movie [USA & Canada]

    2014/11/08,
There were numerous 'fatal encounters' around King Jeong-jo's first year in office; his reign (1776-1800) was riddled with factional rot and close-quarters corruption, and his accession was both immediate and threatening. It was a transitional period twisted by royal bloodshed and unruliness, the perfect personal and political storm for a visionary leader to stand steadfast and serve, or else risk becoming a feeble footnote to fortitude in Joseon's journals. Lee Jae-gyoo's "The Fatal Encounter" recounts the chaotic genesis of the 'King of Misfortune', and depicts a resolute (real-world dreamy) ruler determined to settle the sins and debts of his father(s). In particular, the film centres on one assassination attempt, that of Jeongyuyeokbyeon, and starts its story hours before a preordained bloodshed occurs under ominously stormy skies,...More
  • [HanCinema's Busan International Film Festival Movie Review] "The Fatal Encounter"

    2014/10/11,
From the film's very bleak, poorly lit opening, the tone is very clearly set that "The Fatal Encounter" has no intention of being a happy uplifting movie about the triumph of good over evil during a very dark time in Korea's history. Without ruining too much of the ending, it's really more of a triumph of general disgust over evil, because why would anyone need that much evil can we at least not murder children. Is that too much to ask? King Jeongjo (played by Hyeon Bin) is less a beacon of hope so much as he is the only guy in the movie with a more noble motivation than just bolstering the people who like him,...More
