The epicenter of the Korean Wave was East Asia, but gradually Korean popular culture has reached the shores of other continents as well.

Although its popularity in non-Asian regions is not as pronounced as it has been in East/Southeast Asia, the growing interest in and visibility of Korean popular culture in different parts of the world signifies its emerging position in the global cultural landscape.

In this increasing dissemination of Korean culture, the role of overseas Koreans is noteworthy since they are usually at the center of the consumption of their culture in foreign countries. Before the emergence of the Korean Wave, it was mostly introduced to the local population by Koreans living in other countries.

Since the Korean Wave has grown internationally, overseas Koreans have become crucial forces behind its promotion, as they are probably the most enthusiastic and closest followers of Korean pop culture in most non-Asian countries.

Up-and-Comer Oh Yeon-seo Dazzles in Epic Period Drama

Rising talent Oh Yeon-seo is the new face of KBS 2TV's epic drama, "The Great King Sejong".

In the TV drama, Oh plays "Eo-ri", the most beautiful woman in Chosun who captures the heart of "Prince Yangnyeong" (Park Sang-min). Her strong performance adds an exciting edge to the production.

The young actress has also become a rising face in the advertising industry. According to sources at her agency Star M Entertainment, Oh has been cast in five commercials just this year alone, for Shinhan Credit Card, Will Yoghurt and Hanbul Cosmetics, among others.

The addition of Oh and singer Lee Jeong-hyeon signal a turn of events in the epic tale of "The Great King Sejong".

Eo-ri first approaches Yangnyeong in an attempt to seduce him to stir up the royal family, but she falls in love with the prince's frank, open-hearted personality. Lee Jeong-hyeon to Join "King Sejong"

Singer/actress Lee Jeong-hyeon will join the cast of KBS historical epic "King Sejong" in mid-March. She will play the Cinderella-like role of Shinbin Kim, who was first a lady-in-waiting for Queen Soheon but later became King Sejong's concubine. The competition between Queen Soheon and Lee's character for the king's affection will be one of the key attractions of the story.

Having graduated from Chungang University on Tuesday, Lee said she was so nervous about her first appearance on a historical drama that she is taping and monitoring all historical dramas currently on air. She also practices her diction to suit her role by reading the scripts aloud.

Although a number of filmmakers have contacted her, Lee says she's biding her time to act in a serious film directed by renowned directors like Kim Ki-duk or Lee Chang-dong. Meanwhile, she plans to resume her singing career in Korea by releasing an album in late 2008 or early 2009....| More

Epic Dramas Continues to Boom This Year

KBS starts the New Year with two new epic dramas, "Hong Gil Dong", a Korean Robin Hood story and "The Great King Sejong", another drama portraying the king of Joseon.

Both dramas are set back in the time of the Joseon Kingdom (1392-1910). "Hong Gil Dong" is a comical remake of novel of the same name written by Heo Gyun under King Gwanghaegun's reign (1575-1641).

The rather young director Lee Jung-sub, 36, defines the soap opera as being a "totally new epic drama". He prepared for this drama for about a year with writers Hong Jeong-eun and Hong Mi-ran, also known as the "Hong Sisters" of "Sassy Girl, Chun-hyang" (2005) and "Fantastic Couple" (2006).

Scenes from the preview were rather shocking. The protagonist, Hong Gil-dong (played by actor Kang Ji-hwan) has curly hair and wears sunglasses while Heo I-nok (Seong Yoo-ri), the heroine, looks like Chun-li, the tomboy character from the popular game "Street Fighter".
