How Kim Tae-hee escaped from being the scapegoat 2015/08/24, Source,
In the past, Kim Tae-hee's sister worked at Namoo Actors for 2 years. It was a permanent position with insurance. She was helping the managers and her sister who was making 5 billion won a year. There was no reason for anyone to stop the sister from coming into work and helping out.
However, there was a lot of noise about this as there is no case where a celebrity and his or her family worked out well together. There was also the question of how well a blood-related family could be rational when it came to making decisions about work and money matters,...More
[HanCinema's Film Review] "The Assassination" 2015/08/15,
South Korean media doesn't deal much with the Japanese Occupation. The main reason for this is historical awkwardness. The resistance wasn't all that effective. And after the war most major figures involved in it either joined North Korea, or they ended up in a losing political battle with the US-backed South Korean dictatorship, which was managed almost entirely by Koreans who had collaborated with the Japanese. "The Assassination", amazingly enough, actually addresses this directly. The framing device is in 1949 and the main villain in 1933 isn't a hardened Japanese soldier, but a Korean collaborator,...More

[HanCinema's Film Review] "Il Mare" 2013/10/11,
Sung-Hyun (played by Lee Jeong-jae) and Eun-Joo (played by Jeon Ji-hyeon) are both at a crossroads in their lives. They've lost interest and ambition in their dreams, so they come alone to a beachhouse to rest and repose themselves for whatever comes next in their lives. The twist is, they never actually meet. Separated by the winds of time, they become aware of each others' presence only indirectly, continuing to reflect in solitude while receiving brief bursts of hope and optimism from one another.
"Il Mare" is a film that expertly delineates the difference between loneliness and solitude,...More
[HanCinema's Film Review] "Interview" 2013/10/05,
Eun-seok (played by Lee Jeong-jae) has a novel idea for a documentary- find random people and ask them to tell their stories about love. The basic cuteness of the various interviews very quickly starts to trend toward a discomforting fact- though Eun-seok and his team have convinced themselves this project has objective value, the mere presence of the camera alone is creating an obvious influence both in the stories being told as well as what Eun-seok is choosing to interpret from them.
Whereas most directors try to explore cynicism by painting a portrait of a bleak world, director/screenwriter Byeon Hyeok creates this feeling by making a film about the utter futility in trying to find truth through film,...More
[HanCinema's Film Review] "Last Present" 2013/10/04,
Yong-Gi (played by Lee Jeong-jae) is a comedian who has to constantly put on a bright happy face even though his career is moving in a dubious, nebulous direction. The film's opening scene of him working a crowd onstage with his partner is surprising in its sheer oppressiveness. Going out on stage in an effort to entertain an entire crowd is a daunting, intimidating task, and nothing about the humor in this moment really takes away from this unspoken truth.
The feeling is replicated as Yong-Gi goes home and seems to have the same double-faced relationship with his wife Jeong-Yeon (played by Lee Young-ae),...More
[HanCinema's Film Review] "The New World" 2013/09/28,
Ja-Seong (played by Lee Jeong-jae) has taken the notion of a deep-undercover police assignment to ridiculous lengths. He's been imbedded with a high-level criminal organization for so long that he's the trusted right-hand lieutenant of a man with a very serious claim to the overall leadership. Ja-Seong has a strong reputation as a tough, competent enforcer. He has a wife and deep personal friendships with other people inside the gang. And as an undercover cop, Ja-Seong has had about all he can take insofar as living his life as a lie.
"The New World" is an extremely emotional film. Not in terms of rage or anger, the typical gangster emotions, but rather love, loss, and wanderlust. In practical terms this movie is pretty much a melodrama,...More
'The Face Reader' Exploits Changing Trends to Race up Film Charts 2013/09/23, Source,
Director Han Jae-rim's "The Face Reader" is fast establishing itself as the nation's next box-office hit. The movie, which revolves around a power struggle in the Chosun Dynasty, attracted over six million viewers by Sunday, within just 12 days of its release. Pundits say that part of its success can be attributed to its all-star cast, and part to the way in which it has grasped the changing trends of the market in terms of target viewers and themes. It already ranks as the third-fastest Korean movie to attract this many viewers after "The Host" and "The Thieves", both of which subsequently went on to break the 10-million mark. The former sold 13.01 million tickets and the latter 12.98 million,...More
[HanCinema's Box Office Review] 2013.09.13 - 2013.09.15 2013/09/16, Han Jae-rim's "The Face Reader" dominated Korean cinemas this past weekend, walking away with one of the highest opening weekend hauls of the year. Han's historical drama stole 1.8M admissions (63%) from over 1,190 screens, and has now claimed nearly 2.6 million admissions ($17.1M) in just under a week. Last week's number one, Lee Seung-joon-I's action comedy "The Spy", floundered in second with just 377,861 (12.5%), less than half of what it received the week before. It wasn't just Lee's film that suffered though, a number of foreign entries also found it hard going with even popular animations such as "Monsters University" (5.3%) and "Despicable Me 2" (4.6%) caught blushing in the face of another local showstopper,...More

[HanCinema's Film Review] "The Face Reader" 2013/09/08,
This movie contains surprisingly little content about how face reading actually works. Our hero, the slovenly Nae-Kyung (played by Song Kang-ho) is basically a wizard. Aside from one late scene, where the exact topography of a person's face becomes extremely relevant, Nae-Kyung's abilities are indistinguishable from magic. I can believe that people existed (or even exist today) who have the ability to tell murderers by sight. The simple existence of such a character isn't interesting. What would be interesting is an exploration of why or how they do these things,...More

[HanCinema at Jiff] Q&A with director Park Hoon-jeong-I of "The New World" 2013/05/01,
Earlier in the festival I had a chance to attend a Q&A session with Park Hoon-jeong-I the director of "The New World". Audience reaction to the film was very favorable, and it was by far the longest Q&A session I attended, even though the film ended late in the night. Park Hoon-jeong-I discussed a wide variety of topics, including not just this film but the prospects of others in the future using the same characters.
Q: I really liked the way this film used cigarettes.
A: Yes, for the detective Chief Kang (played by Choi Min-sik) they represent his humanity. Even though, as many characters point out, he really should quit.
Q: I liked how, from the beginning Lee Ja-Sung (played by Lee Jeong-jae) is really paranoid about fakes,...More
[HanCinema's Film Review] "The Thieves": Sunglasses, Suits, and Smokescreens 2013/01/05, Film:"The Thieves" 도둑들 (Do-dook-deul)
Director:Choi Dong-hoonStars:Kim Yoon-seok, Kim Hye-soo, Lee Jeong-jae, Jeon Ji-hyeon, Simon Yam, Kim Hae-sook, Oh Dal-soo, and Kim Soo-hyeon-IReview Score: 3.5 / 5
Choi Dong-hoon's colossal hit "The Thieves" laid siege to the Korean box office last July, snatching 2 million admissions in the first weekend of its nine-week presence in the top ten. This record-smashing flick earned almost 13 million admissions during that time and its profitability will surely continue as the film is set to open in China on the 15th of this month on over 3,000 screens. Its rise to fame was relentless and it was honoured by the film industry as it was nominated for its excellence across most categories from Korea's top award ceremonies.
"The Thieves", much to the distress of perhaps a few of its paying audience members, has been likened to Steven Soderbergh's 2001 film "Ocean's Eleven", but the film deviates enough from the ' heist ' formula to ward off most critics knee-jerk comparison. It's definitely one to hunt down or watch when you can but have we all been guilty of the Halo effect?,...More
Movie "The Thieves" Attracts over 2 Million Viewers 2012/08/01, Source,

That means that after premiering on the 25th, within just five days, a total of 2.86 million people have already seen the flick. This puts the movie proudly at first place in ticket sales. It even seems mighty possible that it will hit the 3 million mark within six days,...More

As soon as I had finished watching "The Housemaid - 2010" (2010, Lim Sang-soo), I became eager to watch the 1960s original. Despite the dramatic differences, both films are worthy of praise and warrant examination as products of their respective eras.,...More

What opened film "The Housemaid - 2010" was not the majestic mansion nor the elegant trail of a noblewoman's skirt we had seen through the still images or previews of the film revealed up till now. The film rather draws on women in a hurriedly-set up food alley in a new city who are cooking meat or handing out flyers to passers-by. And the moment the camera focuses on Eun-yi (played by Jeon Do-yeon), the only character who is seen smiling, one starts to feel an anticipation mixed with anxiety to see how this seemingly innocent female will change once she wears the clothes of a housemaid. Like director Lim Sang-soo said -- "I believe it isn't a remake of the original film" -- the new version of "The Housemaid - 1960" revealed at a press screening on Monday was quite different from the original production helmed by the late director Kim Ki-young. The 2010 version of "The Housemaid - 1960", which adopts its characters from its original film from 50 years ago, strongly poses the question of what it means to live like a human being by depicting on Eun-yi's struggles. Below are excerpts from the press screening of the film which is set for release on May 13,...More

Jeon Do-yeon was called the "Queen of Cannes" after she won the best actress award at the Cannes Film Festival for her role in the film "Secret Sunshine".
Although winning a trophy at Cannes cannot be the absolute criterion for anything, it is worth remembering that so far only two Asian actresses -- Jeon and Hong Kong actress Maggie Cheung -- have been named best actress at a world-renowned film event like Cannes.
Even among European and North American actresses, who usually monopolize the competition at film fests, only four have bagged the best lead actress trophy at Cannes -- Vanessa Redgrave, Barbara Hershey, Helen Mirren and Isabelle Huppert,...More

[INTERVIEW] Actress Lee Na-young (Part 2) 2010/01/14, Source,
Actress Lee Na-young [Lee Jin-hyuk/10Asia]
10: Is it because you have to enter into a world that has already been established?Lee Na-young (Lee): Of course. The character Lee Na-bong that I played in "High Kick Through The Roof" doesn't have a story like the other characters have. If the response is good, I'll watch it within the next couple of days but probably much later on if it's quiet. 10: What are you most worried about? Lee: That I might not be funny. I really wanted to deliver the element of 'fun' to the audience through "High Kick Through The Roof". [Upon hearing the sound of people's laughter outside] Ah... They're probably laughing because Mr. Jeong Bo-seok is funny. What do I do... I'm so ashamed. I think I become ashamed much easier than I used to. 10: Why do you think that's happening? Lee: I don't know. But I say I'm embarrassed much more than I used to. Whatever it is, even with taking photographs, it's so embarrassing. What do you think is the reason?,...More
