Awarded Korean Productions at PIFF

Director Noh Kyeong-tae's < The Last Dining Table > was awarded the NETPAC award for best Korean film at the 2006 Pusan International Film Festival. The NETPAC jury of the festival's 11th edition praised the film's unique style, humane portrayal of the lower class and the acting. The Network for the Promotion of Asian Cinema (NETPAC) seeks to promote and distribute Asian cinema internationally.

The Wide Angel section of the Pusan International Film Festival presented a wide variety of documentaries, short films, animations and experimental films worldwide. The Sunje award is to assist directors from Wide Angel with his/her future project. This year's USD 20,000,- prize for short films were awarded to directors LEE Jin-woo for The Wind Stirs and YOON Seong-ho for Portfolio. The Wind Stirs thanked its award to the characterization and Portfolio for its experimental elements. There is a Special Mention for CHOI Young-jun's Merry Christmas because of the potential shown.

Pusan International Film Festival Wraps Up Its Celebration

The 11th Pusan International Film Festival wrapped up its nine-day celebration on Oct.20 (Friday) in Busan, Korea.

Malaysian director Chui Mui Tan's debut film "Love Will Conquer All" and Chinese director Yang Heng's "Betelnut" won the New Currents award, the top prize in the sole competition section of the 11th Pusan International Film Festival (PIFF), according to the organizing committe of the large-scale movie festval

Only open to debut and second films by Asian filmmakers, the competition is comprised of 10 films vying for the $30,000 prize to the winner.

The organizing committee also made public other winners of various awards during a news conference held at the PIFF Pavilion Conference Room in Busan, ahead of the closing ceremony.

Malaysian director Chui Mui Tan's debut film "Love Will Conquer All" and Chinese director Yang Heng's "Betelnut" won the New Currents award yesterday, the top prize in the sole competition section of the 11th Pusan International Film Festival (PIFF).

Only open to debut and second films by Asian filmmakers, the competition was joined this year by 10 films for an award of $30,000.

The festival's organizing committee also announced the winners of various other awards during a news conference held in the morning at the PIFF Pavilion Conference Room in Haeundae, Pusan, ahead of the closing ceremony at 7 p.m. at the Yatching Center in Haeundae.

Tan also won the FIPRESCI prize, given out by an organization of international film critics for her debut film, and South Korean director Noh Kyeong-tae's "The Last Dining Table" won the NETPAC (Network for Promotion of Asian Cinema) award.
