Rudy red face, frizzy hair, criminal fashion sense and a chronic case of inferiority complex and hopeless delusion, Miss Hongdangmu (carrot) is a new antihero among antiheroes. Such a pitiful role can be crafted with grace only by South Korean actress Kong Hyo-jin, who trades in her stylish image for a makeover as shocking as Charlize Theron a la "Monster".

Premiering Saturday at the 13th Pusan (Busan) International Film Festival (PIFF), "Crush and Blush" signals the promising directorial debut of Lee Kyoung-mi as well as feted filmmaker Park Chan-wook's headway into producing. Lee, who had worked on the set of Park's "Sympathy for Lady Vengeance", brings one of those rare movies that are propelled by a most unusual yet utterly believable character development, where the protagonist pushes forth the narrative by fulfilling her own destiny instead of a set of circumstances requiring a particular role.

Park makes debut as producer

Filmmaker Park Chan-wook has made a debut as a producer for the forthcoming film "Miss Carrot" ("Crush and Blush"), raising expectations about his versatility.

The movie, directed by Lee Kyoung-mi, portrays a 29-year-old Korean woman who teaches Russian in school, but confronts a slew of obstacles in her life, partly due to a frequently blushing face.

The title, "Hongdangmu", means a red radish in Korean, and it refers to a Korean expression linking the color of the vegetable with a person who blushes scarlet.

"This is not a movie about great action or massive sets. What the movie can show, though, is people, and my confidence in the movie lies in the talent of the actors", Park told reporters at a news conference held in Seoul on Wednesday.

In the movie, Kong Hyo-jin plays Yang Mi-suk, the central character who stumbles into one frustrating situation after another. Kong said when she first saw the movie's promotional poster, she was surprised at her own face.

PARK Chan-wook and BONG Joon-ho support KONG Hyo-jin

Celebrated director PARK Chan-wook's first effort as a producer is the comedy-drama "Crush and Blush". KONG Hyo-jin plays the titular character, a marginalised woman whose head easily turns red. Her love for a man played by LEE Jong-hyuk is unrequited. But the teacher doesn't give up that easily.

First time feature film director LEE Kyoung-mi is at the helm of the project. She has experience directing short films. "Crush and Blush" is scheduled for a October 16 release.

The film gained more publicity when a cameo of director BONG Joon-ho ("The Host)" became known. BONG appears as an office worker who takes English classes at a language institute together with KONG's character.

KONG Hyo-jin is currently in cinemas with RYOO Seung-wan's parody "Dachiwama Lee". She broke through with supporting roles in the youngster films "Volcano High" and "No Manners". She also starred in LEE Myeong-se's "M".

"Powerful Opponents" Wraps at 9.4%

The KBS2 TV Monday-Tuesday drama, "Powerful Opponents", ended on June 3rd, with the final episode ratings unable to break through 10%.

According to AGB Nielsen Media Research, the last episode of "Powerful Opponents" did, however, receive the highest rating (9.4%) of its broadcasts. The drama started airing on April 14th and its average TV ratings were calculated at 7.7%.

Starring Chae Rim, Lee Jong-hyuk and Lee Jin-wook, "Powerful Opponents" was a TV drama about the lives of Secret Service agents who worked at the Blue House. Though the plot was unique, it was overshadowed by the popularity of the MBC period piece, "Yi San", Wind of the Palace.

On June 3rd, the TV ratings of "Yi San" were 28.9% and the ratings of the SBS drama "Tokyo Sun Shower" were recorded at 4.2%.

The production filling the "Powerful Opponents" spot will be the martial arts period drama, "Mighty Chil-woo", starring Eric Moon and Koo Hye-seon. Its first broadcast will be on June 9th.
