[Funcurve Review] "Pinocchio" 2015/10/31,
"Pinocchio"'s got all the right ingredients for a promising Korean drama: a novel disorder that can naturally create conflicts, a cast of eye-candy actors who can actually act, and a classic revenge theme. At first glance, the drama seems to be centered around answering one key question that we're all dying to know: can someone with Pinocchio Syndrome (telling lies causes hiccups) live normally in a world where deception is common,...More
[HanCinema's Drama Review] "Let's Eat - Season 2" Episode 15 2015/05/25,
The tonal shift this episode is to serious drama- we're not looking at anything super-weepy or anything, but the immediate reactions of the characters are fairly appropriate. While Jeom-i has never been a terribly important character, she's always been friendly and likable in her own way. And this was just in dealing the other residents of the building. There's something humbling about realizing that Jeom-i actually has an actual family- and that of course, every other character has an actual family too. That they don't talk to as much as they should,...More
[HanCinema's Drama Review] "Let's Eat - Season 2" Episode 7 2015/04/27,
The slow pace of the plot catches up to the characters here. I can't help but find it rather inherently amusing that Dae-yeong and Soo-ji are acting like they have all the time in the world to get her together with Sang-woo, when from the very beginning every single work meeting Soo-ji and Sang-woo have had has referenced the blind date that Sang-woo keeps trying to avoid. Well, that's the problem with romantic fantasies really. They're a lot more fun than actually trying to date,...More
[HanCinema's Drama Review] "Drama Special - Stay Still" 2015/03/13,
Chan-soo (played by Lee Moon-sik) is a detective who's part of a larger team of detectives who all seem to genuinely dislike each other. "Drama Special - Stay Still" doesn't exactly do a good job setting the stage for empathizing with its characters. Throughout most of the first episode it's quite rare to see any of the characters acting particularly pleasant to each other. They're not monstrous or anything it's just...they're not much of a team,...More
[HanCinema's Drama Review] "Flirty Boy and Girl" Episodes 7-12 2014/11/10,
When we last left off, all the characters' basic motivations toward matchmaking had been pretty clearly established, and some of them have been more successful than the others. We start off with a couple of the men trying to figure out why they've been doing so poorly. They do in fact get an explanation, but it's oddly unsatisfying. Mostly this is because, much like this drama's done so far, the commentary here mainly just seems to be on how arbitrary and mostly useless the dating process,...More
[HanCinema's Drama Review] "Flirty Boy and Girl" Episodes 1-6 2014/11/07,
The exact rules behind the game show that makes up the central conceit of "Flirty Boy and Girl" are never gone in to any great detail. But it's pretty clear that the twelve contestants have an obvious goal in mind- marriage. Barely a few minutes into the first episode there have already been multiple marriage proposals. Wouldn't that kind of thing have a bit more emotional heft if it involved characters we actually know something about? That would be the logical way of going about it,...More
[Spoiler] "Blade Man" Sin Se-kyeong confesses to Lee Dong-wook 2014/10/16, Source, On the episode of the KBS 2TV drama "Blade Man" on the 15th, Joo Hong-bin (Lee Dong-wook) went to Son Se-dong's (Sin Se-kyeong) house.
Joo Hong-bin couldn't go in and was just wandering outside. Son Se-dong appeared just then and said, "Why do you run away from me? I can't stand it. Are you afraid that I might be clingy? How can I? I can't stand not seeing you. I miss you. How can I make someone whom I love so much so miserable? So don't run away and shake my hand",...More
[HanCinema's Busan International Film Festival Movie Review] "Socialphobia" by Hong Seok-jae 2014/10/15,
Ha-yeong (played by Ha Yoon-kyeong) is a young woman who has made a reputation for herself online as a particularly vicious slanderer. Once Ha-yeong finds a target she doesn't like, she's ruthless and relentless about bringing them to justice. Of course, a lot of the time she's just slandering people viciously for no good reason. Consequently, when Ha-yeong finally goes a step too far, a posse forms to storm her house and then, well, then things get messy,...More

[HanCinema's Film Review] "Members of the Funeral" 2013/02/22,
Hee-Joon (played by Lee Joo-seung) is a solitary young man. The son of deaf parents, he's used to not really paying attention to people. He's not really bullied or anything like that. It's just that most of the time he doesn't really see much of a point to it. However, by random chance, he ends up separately making close acquaintance with three members of the same family, who all sit together at Hae-Joon's funeral not discussing what kind of a person Hae-Joon was,...More

Press conference for the play "A Nap"
The meeting of a film director and a theatrical play. The press conference for the play "A Nap" -- the second project of the "Director comes to the stage" series -- was held February 9 at Seoul's Baekam Art Hall. Based on the short story of the same title by Park Min-gyu, "A Nap" is a theatrical play directed by filmmaker Heo Jin-ho, who is known for his unique lyricism seen in films such as "Christmas in August" and "One Fine Spring Day". The play depicts a romance between two characters in the twilight years of their life -- the shy boy Young-jin and the girl Yi-sun who was everybody's sweetheart -- and goes back and forth in time, from the past to the present. The play has drawn much attention not only because it is directed by filmmaker Heo Jin-ho but also because of its cast; veteran actors Lee Yeong-ha, Kim Chang-wan and Oh Kwang-rok will play the lead role of Hahn Young-jin while Super Junior member Kim Ki-beom has been cast to portray the boy version of Young-jin.,...More
