[HanCinema's Film Review] "Sunshine" 2015/07/18,
Seol-ji (played by Dana) is a North Korean defector living in the South. Her days are filled with nothing all that remarkable. Seol-ji works in a flower shop with another defector, fulfilling the sometimes bizarre requests of people who order flowers. She also paints as a hobby- this being the profession of her old life in North Korea. Life isn't amazing- but it's not terrible either. Seol-ji has enough money to get by. Which is why she bristles at Sin-woong (played by Kang Eun-tak), an ambitious director who thinks Seol-ji has exactly the right story for a compelling television documentary,...More
[HanCinema's Film Review] "The Wicked" 2014/10/03,
Late in "The Wicked" there's a flashback where we see office manager Lee Seon (played by Na Soo-yoon) decide to take a chance on Se-yeong (played by Park Joo-hee-I). It's not an especially remarkable or relevant scene, except for the fact that this is, in fact, the only time in the entire movie that Lee Seon comes off as particularly sympathetic. [HanCinema's Film Review] "The Night of the Prophet" 2014/08/01,
Yeo-joo (played by Lee Mi-so) works at a call center offering up help to those who need it. On paper, she is extremely good at her job. In reality, though, it soon becomes clear that there's a darker element behind Yeo-joo's work that is less than noble. When her boss marvels at how Yeo-joo has been able to stay active for so long in a job with a high burnout rate, Yeo-joo knows that in part this is because she is somewhat lacking in the empathy department, owing to a traumatic childhood incident,...More
