Women's Film Festival in Seoul Turns 10

The Women's Film Festival in Seoul (WFFIS) celebrates its 10th edition this year with a kick-off ceremony April 10th featuring an HD omnibus as its opener. Called Ten Ten, the movie features six 15 minute short films from five Korean female filmmakers (BYEON Yeong-joo, LEE Soo-yeon, JANG Hee-seon, LIM Sung-min, Helen Lee) and one German female director (Ulrike OTTINGER).

Running until April 18, WFFIS will screen a record 141 films from 30 countries under its banner motto "See the World through Women's Eyes". New this year, however, is a section titled Open Cinema in which feminist films by male directors will also be screened. Other sections of interest include Politics of the Body, which looks at how women's bodies are depicted and exploited, and the Fantastic Female Movie section, which highlights the imaginative side of the female psyche.

Festival organizer have named Korean director LIM Soon-rye recipient of its first Park Nam-ok Award for outstanding accomplishment. ...| More

Korean Film Highlighted at Philadelphia Festival

Philadelphia's film goers will have a feast of Korean cinema to choose from when the 13th Philadelphia Film Festival opens on April 8.
South Korea is well represented with 11 features out of the 133 to be screened, including a special category called New Korean Cinema. The category's six films include Kwak Jae-yong's "The Classic" and Boong Joon-ho's "Salin-ui Chuok (Memories of Murder)".

Last year's run of local horror movies saw four South Korean films make it into the festival's Danger After Dark category, including "Changhwa, Hongryon (A Tale of Two Sisters)", by Kim Ji-wun and "Sainyong Siktak (The Uninvited)" by Lee Soo-yeon.

Rounding out the Korean lineup, "Yongo Wanjon Jongbok (Please Teach Me English)" by Kim Sung-su will screen in the International Comedy section.

Lim Sang-soo's "Paramnan Kajok (A Good Lawyer's Wife)" and Park Ki-hyeong's "Acacia" were also picked by the organizer among the festival's "lucky 13" of not-to-be-missed movies....| More

Local Horror Film to Be Made Into Japanese Novel

A local horror film about people with a sixth sense that allows them to see ghosts will be made into a novel in Japan. The 2003 film "Sa Inyong Siktak (The Uninvited)," which starred Jun Ji-hyun as a woman with an unwanted ability to see the supernatural world, is set to be written by Kei Ooishi, who also wrote the book versions of the Japanese horror film series "Juon."

"The Uninvited" will be released in Japanese theaters in May, Yonhap News Agency reported. Its director Lee Soo-yeon currently is in Japan to promote the film. ...| More
