Bullying is a social problem found a lot in Korean works. It is a dire topic in society in general, but especially in countries where pressure for progress and excellence over peers is high. Despite the potential to explore it, "Days of Wrath" is more of a suspense-fueled revenge story than a work about bullying,...More

[HanCinema's Film Review] "For The Emperor" 2014/06/13,
Lee Hwan (played by Lee Min-ki) is a man who, as far as I can tell, has four goals in life. First, he wants to engage in gruesome violence. It doesn't really matter against who. Second, he wants to run a shady gambling enterprise. Third, he wants to have sex. Fourth, he wants to do drugs. Lee Hwan for the most part succeeds in all these goals. Except to the extent these are probably bad goals in life. In that sense he's probably failing.
"For The Emperor" doesn't really concern itself with the finer subtleties of these plot points though,...More

From the "Two Cops" franchise and the "Public Enemy" series to most recently "The Apprehenders", Korean cinema seems to have seen its fair share of cop movies, but "SIU" is proving to be entertainment that sells well despite its flaws.
Having drawn over 550,000 viewers as of Tuesday since opening last week, the box office topper shows the grace of having a convincing script, allowing actors to shine and sticking close to the rules of a given genre, without being afraid to throw something else into the picture. The latter, however, proves to be a trap as well, as some grossly miscalculated narrative elements end up becoming cliches that weigh down the intrigue,...More
