Korean Stars to Build School in Himalayas

Singer Lee Moon-sae and 17 other Korean entertainers are planning a week-long trip to a remote Nepalese village to help build a school.

Lee organized the volunteer group for the trip, which has been dubbed the Seollebal Himalaya Expedition. "Seollebal" is a portmanteau of the Korean words "seolleda", meaning "feeling expectant", and "balgeoreum", meaning "footsteps".

The group, which includes actor Park Sang-won, actress Lee Tae-ran, supermodel Park Se-ryen, and film director Han Ji-seung, held an organization ceremony at a café in Seoul on Thursday.

"We want to do something for the poor people of Nepal to return the warmth and genuineness we have experienced in the Himalayas", the group announced. "We will spend a week from May 15 at a village in Dhading working as volunteers".

Actresses Gain Presence Onscreen

While the female persona Korean entertainment remains largely reminiscent of Hollywood during the 1950~60s, a few in recently released or upcoming films are beginning to reflect, with some realism, Korean women today.

Women onscreen tend to be either innocent asexual Audrey Hepburns (think Lee Young-ae, Choi Ji-woo, Song Hye-kyo) or smoldering Marylin Monroes oozing with sex appeal (Kim Hye-soo, Uhm Jung-hwa). Then there exists a third, very minor group of eccentrics like Katherine Hepburn that fit into neither category, like actresses Kang Hye-jeong, Bae Doona and Kong Hyo-jin.

In other words, it is rather difficult to meet truly realistic female characters in movies. A most disappointing example is director Kwak Gyeong-taek's latest offering "A Love". Hallyu hopefuls strut, sing and prance for the judges

It wasn't their first audition, they said, but it was just as tense.
Byun Hyo-myeong and her friend Yang Eun-bi, both 16, were getting twitchy and nervous, waiting for their turn to go up on the stage and sing. "My mother really wants me to become a star, so she's been taking me to casting auditions since I was thirteen", Hyo-myeong said as she tried to smooth out her shirt.
Although the girl smiled and said she was "pretty confident" she would do well this time, she and her friend kept fidgeting nervously in their seats.
The two were among the 260 vocalist candidates who passed the initial online screening and won spots to the next round in the competition. The winner, though, would earn more than just a role on television or a spot in a singing group ― he or she would, possibly, become Korea's next big made-for-export superstar.

TV Networks Hand Out Awards

The three major broadcasting networks KBS, MBC and SBS rang out 2005 with various music and television awards of their own in the past week.

Singer Kim Jong-kook, former member of the duo Turbo who released his third album as a solo artist in 2005, swept the top music awards handed out by the networks. Kim won the top prize at SBS Music Awards, KBS Music Awards and MBC Music Festival.

Kim released his latest album "This Is Me" in June, which has sold about 200,000 copies. Kim had three hit songs from the album, including "You're Lovable (Sarangsurowo)".

Kim debuted as part of Turbo in 1995, putting out five albums with rapper and singer Mikey. He released his first solo album in 2001.

At the SBS Music Awards on Thursday, Kim and Mikey surprised viewers with a reunion performance of their top hits as Turbo.
