Born in 1962, he majored in Sociology at Yonsei University and studied film at the Korean Academy of Film Arts (KAFA). From his feature debut"“Girls’ Night Ou", "Tears", "A Good Lawyer’s Wife" to "The President’s Last Ban", he has depicted the liberal sexual desires or the hounding political restlessness of his lead characters while critiquing the ironies and maladies of Korean society. He earned both critical and commercial acclaims as his films were continuously invited to internationally renowned festivals such as Panorama Section in Berlin Int’l Film Festival with "Tears", Venice Film Festival with " A Good Lawyer’s Wife" and Directors’ Fortnight in Cannes with "The President’s Last Bang".
[HanCinema's Film Review] "Intimate Enemies" 2015/07/04,
Ji-noo (played by Ryoo Seung-beom) is always clad in his distinctive helmet as he does jobs for...I think he's supposed to be working for some sort of corporation but they act like the mob. I don't mean that metaphorically. Their response to the disappearance of important money is literally to bludgeon people until they're so disfigured they need special make-up for the rest of the movie. Anyway, what Ji-noo does isn't that important anyway. Na-mi (played by Ko Joon-hee) runs a junk yard. Her much more important contribution to the story is to show off her butt,...More
[HanCinema's Film Review] "The Taste of Money" : Tasty Money 2013/01/19, Film: "The Taste of Money" 돈의 맛 (Don-eui Mat)Director: Lim Sang-sooStars: Kim Kang-woo, Baek Yoon-sik, Yoon Yeo-jeong & Kim Hyo-jinReview Score: 2.5 / 5
Lim Sang-soo came back from the 2012 Cannes Film Festival bitter and dispirited as "The Taste of Money" received the lowest average rating from their panel of internal critics. This, Lim's fifth film, also struggled at the Korean box office with a mere 1,162,699 admissions as this 'spirited' sequel to his 2010 remake "The Housemaid - 2010" failed to perform both local and abroad. Last year the Korean box office was smothered with sexy thrillers and dramas, some more successful than others, leaving many cinephiles and critics to question the significance and scope of such provocative films.
Lim's 2010 remake of "The Housemaid" was also met with scepticism and received a lot of public attention due to its uninhibited portrayal of the salacious and disturbing world of Korea's wealthy elite. Those who caught Lim's modern interpretation of Kim Ki-young's 1960s classic will instantly recognise the film's grand and opulent veneer as the fantastically rich play with power, money, sex, and, of course, fire.,...More
[Guest Post] Daniel Tudor on Korean cinema 2012/11/09, Source,
I'm not a true cinephile by any stretch of the imagination. I've always been the archetypal casual fan, who knows what he likes, but doesn't really like it enough to remember every line of the script. People ask, "have you seen [insert name of genius film here]?" and I honestly reply "yeah, I saw it a few years back, it was great". But then I'll be unable to back that up with any enlightened commentary on that scene with the uninterrupted shot that goes all the way around the bar and back again when all the mobsters are being introduced. Or even who was in it, sometimes.
But when I first moved to Seoul in 2004, Korean cinema got to me. In some way it was a stroke of luck to be here while a golden era was still in swing,...More
Director Lim Sang-soo captures recipe of failure at Cannes 2012/05/30, Source,
The Cannes Film Festival appears to be particularly cruel for one Korean director. Perhaps Lim Sang-soo's tirade for his failure to win means a gap the Korean film industry has to fill to be a producer of movies that truly live up to global standards.
Before and after the closing ceremony, Lim, who directed, "The Taste of Money", said to various Korean media that his failure to win was a personal "tragedy" and his participation a mistake because he was telling a "very Korean story" that foreigners can't understand,...More

[HanCinema's Film Review] "The Housemaid - 2010" 2011/02/12,
As soon as I had finished watching "The Housemaid - 2010" (2010, Lim Sang-soo), I became eager to watch the 1960s original. I was surprised to find that it differs rather drastically from its modern remake. In fact, one can barely call the 2010 version a remake at all. Despite the dramatic differences, both films are worthy of praise and warrant examination as products of their respective eras.,...More

What opened film "The Housemaid - 2010" was not the majestic mansion nor the elegant trail of a noblewoman's skirt we had seen through the still images or previews of the film revealed up till now. The film rather draws on women in a hurriedly-set up food alley in a new city who are cooking meat or handing out flyers to passers-by. And the moment the camera focuses on Eun-yi (played by Jeon Do-yeon), the only character who is seen smiling, one starts to feel an anticipation mixed with anxiety to see how this seemingly innocent female will change once she wears the clothes of a housemaid. Like director Lim Sang-soo said -- "I believe it isn't a remake of the original film" -- the new version of "The Housemaid - 1960" revealed at a press screening on Monday was quite different from the original production helmed by the late director Kim Ki-young. The 2010 version of "The Housemaid - 1960", which adopts its characters from its original film from 50 years ago, strongly poses the question of what it means to live like a human being by depicting on Eun-yi's struggles. Below are excerpts from the press screening of the film which is set for release on May 13,...More

If one had to come up with a subtitle for director Hong Sang-soo's tenth film "Ha Ha Ha", it could be "Cute". The movie is guided by the memories that movie critic Joong-sik (played by Yoo Joon-sang) and aspiring movie director Moon-gyeong (played by Kim Sang-kyeong) have about their summer trip to Tongyeong. And just like any other film by director Hong, these men go to an unfamiliar place where they chase after women, drink, lie and talk both nonsense and of their dreams. But no matter how pathetic or loser-like they act, one cannot hate them,...More

Jeon Do-yeon was called the "Queen of Cannes" after she won the best actress award at the Cannes Film Festival for her role in the film "Secret Sunshine".
Although winning a trophy at Cannes cannot be the absolute criterion for anything, it is worth remembering that so far only two Asian actresses -- Jeon and Hong Kong actress Maggie Cheung -- have been named best actress at a world-renowned film event like Cannes.

The appearance of director Kim Ki-young's 1960 film "The Housemaid" was an event in itself. It was an original attempt made amidst the rush of films based on literary works or the affection between lovers. The story of a house in which a young housemaid reminds the onlooker of a femme fatale, the wife who stands in contrast to the maid and the master of the house whose desires dangerously alternate back and forth between the two female characters, was a more strange and frightening experience than ever seen in a Korean film,...More
