By Park Si-sooStaff Reporter Actress Moon Geun-yeong can breathe a sigh of relief as an ideologically-motivated legal battle involving Moon and her family finally came to an end Thursday. The Seoul Central District Court handed down a ruling in favor of Jin Joong-kwon, a liberal scholar who worked for Chung-Ang University, in a suit brought to the court by ultra-conservative commentator Ji Man-won over remarks made by Jin. Judge Seo Ki-ho said in the ruling Jin's remarks couldn't be seen as insulting, dismissing all charges against the liberal scholar. "Ji's remarks were regarded as a sort of satire on society", the judge added. The dispute was triggered late last year when it was revealed that the 22-year-old actress, nicknamed the country's "kid sister", made a big donation. Staff Reporter The Seoul International Drama Awards 2009 wrapped up its 10-day run with a grand award ceremony, the biggest in its four-year history, at Olympic Hall, Olympic Park last week. The annual event started Sept. 4 at various venues around the city with 169 dramas from 37 countries competing. The final ceremony saw numerous stars, producers and writers attending, a big leap from the rather localized ceremonies of previous years. The ceremony was broadcast on KBS, and the event venue was filled with fans that came to see some of their favorite local and foreign stars. The Grand Prize went to "Memoirs in China", a period drama about two families surviving turbulent times during the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), Republican China (1911-1949) and finally the People's Republic of China. Kim Hyun-joong and Moon Geun-yeong were voted the best actor and actress of 2009 by Internet users from 50 countries. Kim received over 25.5 million votes and Moon over 25.2 million in the poll conducted from July 11 to Aug. 30 by Yahoo! Korea and the organizers of the 2009 Seoul Drama Awards.
The poll was conducted in three languages -- Korean, English and Japanese. Kim received 46 percent of the votes in Korean, 49 percent in English, and 47 percent in Japanese, while Moon's tally was 54 percent, 45 percent, and 43 percent. "Boys Over Flowers" was the most popular Korean soap opera with over 22.2 million votes, getting 38 percent in Korean, 43 percent in English and 42 percent in Japanese. The poll included soap operas released in Korea, China, Japan, Taiwan and Hong Kong and their actors and actresses.
