The Smithsonian Institution's Korean Film Festival DC 2008, organized through the Smithsonian's Freer and Sackler Galleries and made possible by the Korea Foundation, the Korean Film Council, and the US-Korea Business Council, continues into June. Korean cartoons grow up and into lucrative animation industry

An old, driverless car approaches a young man, suddenly stands up, and transforms itself into a tall, talking robot armed with never-before-seen technology.

This is a scene from "Transformers", the recent Hollywood blockbuster directed by Michael Bay. The show features robots that can change themselves into any kind of vehicle to fight against evil robots out to takeover earth.

The movie and the original 1980s cartoon on which it is based captivated many robot enthusiasts, young and old.

The creative power behind the Transformers is Korean animator Nelson Shin, 67, the producer of the original Transformers cartoon and director of the 1986 Transformers movie. Dubbed "god of animators" in South Korea", Shin and the staff at his studio AKOM in Korea have also been drawing famous U.S. cartoon characters from "The Simpsons", "Dilbert" and "Pink Panther".

2nd London Korean Film Festival Starts

15 Korean films are being showcased this November at the 2nd annual London Korean Film Festival, screening at the Barbican in London's financial district. Opening the weeklong festival, which runs the 2nd to the 8th, is KIM Ki-duk's 2007 Cannes competition entry, "Breath". The film quickly sold-out as has the festival's curtain-closer, "I'm A Cyborg, But That's OK", which won the Berlin Alfred Bauer prize this year for director PARK Chan-wook.

Director PARK will present the closing film and lead a 'Screen-Talk' with the audience following the screening. Two films from PARK's famed vengeance trilogy, "Sympathy for Lady Vengeance" (2006) and "Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance" (2002) will also be screened, forming a mini-retrospective of the director's work.

Oct. 28 is the International Animation Day

In celebration of the International Animation Day (Oct. 28), a special screening, a panel talk, and a workshop were held at the Seoul Animation Center from Oct. 26 to 28.

Hosted by the Korean Office of Korean Animation Film Association and the SBA, this event offered a free animation screening as well as an open panel discussion with directors Nelson Shin and Yeong Hoon Jang.

The free special screening held for three days from the 26th to the 28th showcased hard-to-see animations from nine countries, including Korea, China, Portugal, Italy, Croatia, Hungary, and Poland, which were screened from three to five times a day.

Of particular note is The District! by Hungarian director Aaron Gauder. This crazy adventure of a group of teenagers out to make some money in the 8th zone, at the heart of Budapest, received the Grand Prix at the Annecy International Film Festival and the Best Work Prize at the Ottawa Animation Film Festival.

[HERALD INTERVIEW] CNN executive: Korea a 'role model'

Korea, which has grown into "the world's technology hub and a giant incubator for futuristic technology", is a fascinating country that the world has much to learn from, said Debra Kocher, vice president of CNN International.

"The progress that South Korea has made in (the past) 30 years is extraordinary", she said in an interview with The Korea Herald on Monday.

"I think I heard the figure that 30 years ago the average per capita income (of Korea) was $85 (per month). That kind of change, becoming an industrial country and now technology driven country, it is something worth noting for the rest of the world and perhaps it is a role model for other countries", she said.
