For the second year in a row, four Korean arthouse films will be presented to audiences in Japan through the Art Film Showcase in Tokyo. The eight-week series of screenings is sponsored by KOFIC and the Image Forum arthouse theater in Tokyo.

The showcase is an effort to introduce Japanese viewers to a wider spectrum of Korean cinema by presenting high quality works that would otherwise not receive a theatrical release in Japan. Each selected film will screen for two weeks in relay fashion.

The Art Film Showcase 2008 will open on March 8 with a screening of JEON Soo-il's "With a Girl of Black Soil" (2007). The film originally premiered in the Horizons section of the 2007 Venice International Film Festival, where it won the Art Cinema CICAE Award and the Lina Mangiacapre Award. The film tells the story of a single father who loses his job in a coal mine.

On March 22, NOH Dong-seok's "Boys of Tomorrow" (2006) will open its run. The story of two young men who struggle to ...| More

Asia Hot Shots Berlin, a festival for film and video art, has selected NOH Dong-seok 's "Boys of Tomorrow" to screen in its competition section. The inaugural festival takes place January 16 – 22 at the festival cinemas, babylon berlin:mitte and Z-Bar.

Director NOH's sophomore feature is about two boys on the outskirts of town who believe that their life is elsewhere but they have no means to pursue their dreams. NOH twists several conventions of the gangster genre in a unique way and derives extreme tension and pace through his minimalist style.

"Boys of Tomorrow" screened in competition last year at the Locarno International Film Festival. NOH's debut feature "My Generation" (2004), was shown in the competition of the Pusan International Film Festival as well as at renowned international films festivals such as Rotterdam, Jeonju, Hong Kong and Singapore. The director is a graduate of the Korean Academy of Film Arts.

Yes, it's Friday and that means a check of what's new at the movies.
It looks like our Son Heekyung is going to give us a preview of two Korean and two Hollywood productions.
Let's take a look.
Director Noh Dong-seok has released his second feature film "Boys of Tomorrow".
Two boys want to escape from their bleak lives.
One collects model guns and dreams of buying a real one.
The other works long hours, and hopes to go to the Maldives to play the drums.
Both are optimistic over their youth, but unexpected events start to blur their dreams.

Another new film from Korea is the family-orientated, "Sorrow Even Up in Heaven".
The drama is a remake of the successful 1960s film of the same title.
A man destroys his family after getting addicted to gambling.
The mother runs away from home leaving her 13-year-old daughter to take care of her three younger siblings.
The director says he wanted to give strength and hope to youngsters put on the spot through his film.
