[HanCinema's Hall of Fame Review] "Save the Green Planet": The End is Nigh 2014/07/05, In the Spotlight this Week:Jang Joon-hwan's "Save the Green Planet"
Aliens, kidnapping, and torture make for terrific film fodder, but a balance must be struck in order not to over/undercook this volatile cinematic concoction. Too much comedy and the intensity may be compromised, and if the horror is left to broil the dish may become too dark to digest. We might assume that, given the country's hesitancy with science fiction, and its tendency to over-salt on silliness, that Korean cooks may be ill suited to even supervise such convergence. But a brilliant balance was indeed found when, in 2003, director Jang Joon-hwan made his daring debut with the delightfully delirious "Save the Green Planet",...More
[HanCinema's Film Review] "The Neighbor Zombie" 2013/09/06,
Practically every piece of zombie fiction has had that one scene where somebody realizes they've been bitten, or someone meets a loved one who's turned into a zombie, and various emotional hand-wringing ensues. But everyone knows these scenes are only subplots to give us a breather from the typical standard zombie smashing action.
"The Neighbor Zombie" takes these small scenes and throws them into full-focus,...More

Korean Cinema 2011: The View from Here 2012/01/14, Source,
US-based author and curator of film at the Smithsonian's Freer and Sackler Galleries in Washington, DC, Tom VICK shares his views on recent trends he has noticed programming their Korean film festival.
How do you introduce new Korean films to an American audience? Since 2004, when I began programming the Korean Film Festival DC, the answer to this question has become more difficult to answer. This is not to say that it's harder to find good films. Quite the opposite. The problem (if it can be called a problem) is that there are so many films to choose from. The explosion of digital production and distribution in the last decade or so has made it easier than ever to make a film, but harder than ever find an audience for it,...More
