The 13th Puchon International Fantastic Film Festival (PiFan) kicks off July 16 – 26 with an exciting range of new Korean independent genre films, commercial hits and rare classics. Among the 12 films vying for the Puchon Choice competition section's top prizes are Korean low-budget omnibus feature "The Neigbour Zombie", by four Korean directors, OH Young-doo, RYU Hoon, HONG Young-geun, and JANG Yoon-jung and the spring released detective thriller "Private Eye" starring HWANG Jeong-min and written and directed by PARK Dae-min.
PiFan hosts several World Premieres of new Korean genre films in its World Fantastic Cinema section including "Bloody Shake" by KIM Jee-yong, a film that delves into the dark side of the unconscious; "A Good Night's Sleep for the Bad" by KWON Yeong-cheol - an action noir that portrays how several desperate youth are driven to armed robbery; "Norwegian Woods" by NO Zin-soo - a campy B-horror set in a forest; "My Burning Heart", an upbeat, sexy love story by...| More
Director PARK Dae-min's debut feature film "Private Eye" stars Korea's top character actors HWANG Jeong-min ("You Are My Sunshine") and RYOO Deok-hwan ("Like a Virgin"). Besides solid acting performances the film is praised for its intelligent and entertaining story by critics.
Cinus Myeongdong (northern Seoul) and Cinus Gangnam (southern Seoul) – in cooperation with the Seoul Metropolitan Government – will offer screenings of "Private Eye" with English subtitles. The detective film premieres on 2 April. A medical student (RYOO) tempts a reluctant private detective (HWANG) into a murder case of a dead body he stumbled upon. The two polar opposites complement each other in order to solve the volatile case involving powerful politicians. Cinus is currently showing two Korean films with English subtitles. One is the melodrama "More than Blue" starring KWON Sang-woo and LEE Bo-yeong; the other is record breaking surprise hit documentary "Old Partner" about the bond between an old...| More
Korean movies playing in theaters have no English subtitles and thus cater mostly to Korean audiences only, despite the rising number of non-Koreans living in the country.
But that picture is about to change, albeit slowly. The Seoul Metropolitan Government has picked two theaters to provide English subtitled Korean movies to give people who lack Korean language skills a chance to enjoy Korean movies. The selected theaters in Seoul are two branches of local cinema chain CINUS. One is in Myeong-dong, central Seoul, and the other in Gangnam-gu (district), the southern part of the city. The films to get English subtitles this year will be those with appeal to international audiences, giving them a chance to watch major Korean films during their first runs. The full list has not been finalized yet, but Seoul officials say that about 10 Korean movies released this year will be shown subtitled in English at these two CINUS theaters. As part of this series, people who don...| More

By Lee Hyo-wonStaff Reporter Debutant director Park Dae-min brings a delicious mix of drama, comedy and adventure in "Private Eye", which, moreover, paints rosy prospects for South Korean cinema as it signals the potential of homegrown detective films. Set against the Japanese colonial period (1910-45), the movie invites viewers to hop on coolie-drawn carts and join an accidental Sherlock Holmes (Hwang Jeong-min) in tracking down a serial killer on the loose. If 2007's "Shadows in the Palace" hinted at the possibility for an Agatha Christie-style suspense, "Private Eye" promises something more solid, and perhaps even a serial franchise. It keeps things smart and intriguing rather than mind boggling or cryptic, and leads the audience half a step ahead in the cat and mouse game. The movie also manages to be entertaining without being too light as it gives birth to a detective with character. Hwang plays Hong Jin-ho, one of those amiable rude people, whose successful surviva...| More
A new kind of Korean film has been born with "Private Eye". As you can guess from the title, this film is about the adventures of private eye Hong Jin-ho and his two assistants: med student Gwang-su and inventor Sun-deok. Let's follow them as they delve into a mysterious murder case.As Joseon Dynasty draws to a close, a mysterious incident occurs at the home of a top official, leaving a room soaked in blood, but without a body. Gwang-su, a medical-student-in-training, is appalled when he sees a photo of the missing man. To his horror, the man in the photo looks just like the body he picked up the other night to study anatomy with. Gwang-su goes to private eye Jin-ho, seeking help to avoid any false charges. For money, Jin-ho will take on nearly any job, but not a murder case. Gwang-su stops the departing Jin-ho only by offering an immense sum of money. [Interview : Park Dae-min Director of Private Eye ] "Hong Jin-ho is the first private eye to take the stage in Korean filmo...| More
