[HanCinema's Film Review] "DongJu, The Portrait of A Poet" 2016/04/09,
Once upon a time DongJu (played by Kang Ha-neul) was a young poet living under Japanese Occupation, one place or another. The thirties, sadly enough, were the apex of empire-building the world over, and there are certain ethical questions DongJu runs up against constantly. Is it morally acceptable to help the Japanese Empire in any capacity? Is it ethically sound to be a poet rather than a doctor in an age where doctors seem way more important? Is it wise to express political opinions at all? How far can one go in the name of resistance before fighting back becomes foolhardy?,...More

"Zootopia" gets more screens and scores...
"Zootopia" was released in Korea mid-February and for the first three weeks it sat in third place; after its America release, however, the film shot to number one. This past weekend "Zootopia" (also known as "Zootropolis") banked another 358 thousand admissions ($2.5 million) to bring its total tally in Korea now to 2.8 million ($18.7 million; 30%). Worldwide, Byron Howard and Rich Moore's "Zootopia" has grossed over $591 million,...More

Disney's "Zootopia" claws its way to the top...
Walt Disney's "Zootopia" arrived in Korea mid-February and for the first three weeks it has steadily occupied third place. Films like "A Violent Prosector", "Deadpool", and "Spirits' Homecoming" have managed to outperform Disney's latest, the company's 55th animated feature, but the film found new impetus in the wake of its American release (March 4) and has now climbed to the top of Korea's box office during its fourth week out,...More
[HanCinema's Film Review] "Tinker Ticker" 2015/04/04,
Why do terrorists exist? Something often lost in discussions about terrorism is that the people who carry out these acts generally aren't crude fundamentalists. Most of them actually have fairly good educations, and have been exposed to modern Western ideals on modern Western terms. So it is with Jeong-goo (played by Byeon Yo-han) and Hyo-min (played by Park Jeong-min-I). These young men make and detonate bombs as a protest against modern culture. The perverse part of it is, they hate modernity precisely because they understand that it's terrible based on direct personal experience. That experience being office work,...More
[HanCinema's Film Review] "Heartbreak Hotel" 2015/03/14,
One of the more uncomfortable parts of Korean culture for me is the way it tends to fetishize how Wonderful Life would be if people could just go to America. I'm not sure what many Korean people think American life is actually like, but we tend to treat each other like garbage, and the immigrants even worse than that. So it goes for John (played by Kang Ji-hwan). He's a young Korean man living in America who looks and acts, well, kind of like a petty low-class bum. His only really selling point is youth, and even that's not going to stick around for much longer,...More
[HanCinema's Film Review] "MAD SAD BAD" 2014/05/10,
The first portion of "MAD SAD BAD" is a story about high school in the modern age. Seung-ho (played by Lee David) is a fairly lonely and pathetic teenage boy. He socializes mainly through a chatting cell phone function. The monotony of his life is given a sudden shock by a text message from Woo-bi (played by Son Soo-hyeon), who claims that she's suffering from abuse and singles Seung-ho out of the chatting group for aid.
This segment plays like a mystery, except there's not really any invesigation. Everyone just takes Woo-bi's claims at face value, eventually leading up to a final confrontation,...More

[HanCinema's Film Review] Bleak Night 2011/09/17, Yoon Sung hyun's first feature film "Bleak Night" is an unadulterated examination of distress among the Korean youth. Yoon's rough aesthetic, jarring chronology, and realistic characterisations pull together in a piece that questions the social self and personal consequence.
Korea's suicide rates have doubled in the last ten years, according to statistics released by the Korean government this year, and a large number of these personal tragedies involved the Korean youth. The film handles this subject matter in a very deliberate and personal manner,...More
