[HanCinema's Drama Review] "Fantastic" Episode 8 2016/09/24,
A brief flashback fills us in on the question of how much Hae-seong knows, and also when he knew about it. It's noteworthy how just because Hae-seong is discretionary with the information he has doesn't necessarily mean that So-hye is happy with all the implications. While on the surface level it can seem rewarding to be dealing with a stand-up guy like Hae-seong, on the deeper level it can seem rather unfair if one and only one partner is making noble sacrifices,...More
[HanCinema's Drama Review] "Fantastic" Episode 7 2016/09/23,
Mi-seon (played by Kim Jae-hwa) is the third best friend of So-hye and Seol- the one who everyone has to call when they're in trouble. Mi-seon never really has any plotlines of her own, she's just a useful shoulder to cry on. Consequently, her character offers some much needed perspective when it comes to difficult questions like, am I happy, and should I do such-and-such risky behavior considering the possible trade-offs?,...More
[HanCinema's Drama First Look] "Fantastic" 2016/09/18,
Terminal illness is a common and very old theme in Korean drama, but like everything else rich with melodramatic potential, it has often been subjected to shallow and cheap treatment. Love for tears and tension over love for meaning is less common these days, however and so we see productions which make the effort to treat serious topics with more respect. It is too early for me to say "Fantastic" is such a production, but it is on the right path,...More
[HanCinema's Drama Review] "Fantastic" Episode 6 2016/09/17,
While Jong-gi clearly skirts the line of medical ethics, all of his actions are very clearly in line with trying to calm So-hye down and see herself as a person whose life has value. It's very noteworthy how Jong-gi has gotten So-hye to go from mental breakdown in earlier episodes to participating in a support group this episode. The support group scene is wonderful, by the way, precisely because it really gets at how the mental toll of illness is just as bad as the physical, and how it really helps just to get positive encouragement from peers,...More
[HanCinema's Drama Review] "Fantastic" Episode 5 2016/09/16,
Joon-gi (played by Kim Tae-hoon) is So-hye's doctor. Given that So-hye is dying, that's a very awkward position to be in. While Joon-gi obviously wants So-hye to get better, So-hye's problems are just as much mental as they are physical at this point. In So-hye's general desperation to find some last minute meaning in life, she has been willing to latch onto any kind of validation possible- even if it means an obviously unethical relationship with her own physician,...More
[HanCinema's Drama Review] "Fantastic" Episode 4 2016/09/10,
The production team continues with the very wise decision to be more about drama than forced comedy. We see this episode even more clearly that Hae-seong, as utterly obnoxious as he can be given the opportunity, is really just looking for the chance to be a good guy. It's uncanny how well Hae-seong is able to compose himself during action scenes. While ostensibly acting is the actual important part of his job, note how Hae-seong does not appear to be using a stunt double. That's dedication which can't easily be faked,...More
[HanCinema's Drama Review] "Fantastic" Episode 3 2016/09/09,
There's some badly needed sympathetic characterization for So-hye and Hae-seong this episode as they respond to the aftermath of the big kiss at the last cliffhanger. In contrast to the normal romantic comedy implications of that trope, "Fantastic" instead gets into the issues of self-worth that provoked So-hye and Hae-seong into acting that way. So-hye has, of course, been in a generally rotten mood since getting her bad medical prognosis. Hae-seong, however, has really bad insecurities when it comes to his lack of acting talent,...More
[HanCinema's Drama Review] "Fantastic" Episode 2 2016/09/03,
Seol (played by Park Si-yeon) is So-hye's old friend, and a bit of a wreck. Literally, even, considering the last episode's cliffhanger, and the woman's precarious life situation isn't much better. We very quickly go from Seol giving standard reassurances to So-hye to seeing her get in a huge fight with her current partner to even bigger existential crises as violence and base hostility quickly become the order of the day,...More
[HanCinema's Drama Review] "Fantastic" Episode 1 2016/09/02,
So-hye (played by Kim Hyeon-joo) is a drama writer. Her sense of confidence and competence is well-displayed metaphorically in the opening action scene of "Fantastic". To succeed in the cutthroat world of drama production, So-hye has had to be the best of the best. But no matter how good she is, every so often So-hye has to rely on the help of such disreputable persons as Hae-song (played by Joo Sang-wook). A handsome and arrogant actor, to date the only notion we have that Hae-song may be a good person is the man's genuine love toward his grandmother,...More
[HanCinema's Drama Preview] "Fantastic" 2016/08/27,
"Terminal illness" and "comedy" do not exactly seem to match outside of the black comedy genre, yet Dramaland keeps trying to make it happen. Unfortunately, it usually fails. Even so, "Fantastic" is another drama which promises laughs and fluffy romance, along with great female friendship and other interesting concepts. The series does have promise and if it succeeds where many others have failed, it will be a pleasant surprise,...More

[Guest Post] Celebrating Family Outing Part 1 - The Cast 2015/07/05, Source,
Seven years ago, an ambitious reality show called Family Outing appeared on Korean TV. Hosted by "The Nation's MC" Yoo Jae-seok (most may know him only as the guy with the bowl cut in PSY's recent videos), this variety show took outdoor reality to a level that is still trying to be reached. The show ran for nearly 2 years on SBS's 'Good Sunday' and had many of the same cast and crew members from the game show X-Man. What this show offered was more than just silly games and jokes, it was a travelogue of Korean villages and offered a glimpse into the Confucian-based society unheard of in America,...More

Park Si-yeon in "Greatest Marriage" poster 2014/09/11, Source,
A killer poster of "Greatest Marriage", based on the subject of 'Miss Mom' (women who don't want to marry but have children), has been released. In the patriarchal society, if a woman has children and concentrates only on housework, it will cut off their social experience,...More
[HanCinema's Drama Review] "Coffee House" 2014/05/31,
Try to name a few romantic comedies where the problems that keep a couple apart are based on their own issues, rather than an outside force or noble idiocy. Forget disapproving mothers in law and the leads deciding that, although no one is forcing them, they need to give up the person they like for a while, for reasons. 'A Witch's Love' would be a recent example and although shaky in its handling of the love triangle and female lead lately, a good one. 'Coffee House' is another,...More

Is Nudity Still a Box-Office Draw? 2012/11/09, Source,
Testing the legal limits of screen nudity can often be an effective way to publicize a new film, and getting a star to show as much skin as possible is a shortcut to wide media coverage. But increasingly there are signs that such marketing strategies no longer guarantee success. Evidence to the contrary might be provided by a look at the box office performance of movies released this year that drew a lot of attention for nudity. "A Muse", which drew attention for nude scenes by rookie Kim Go-eun-I, managed to pull 1.35 million moviegoers. "The Scent", starring Park Si-yeon, drew 1.25 million viewers, while "The Concubine" starring Jo Yeo-jeong attracted 2.64 million,...More

Cannes publicity ignores chronic lack of interesting roles for actresses By Kwaak Je-yup No one can dispute that the Korean film industry is flourishing. Investment and return are both on the upside. There are many words in this world which can be used to describe a beautiful woman but the adjective which probably best suits actress Park Si-yeon is 'alluring'. Breaking news: Park Yong-ha was discovered dead at his Nonhyun-dong, Seoul, home on the morning of June 30. I'll update with details if/as they become available.
I (Javabeans) am in utter shock. WHAT?
Park Yong-ha died at the age of 32, having debuted fifteen years ago in youth shows like KBS's 1995 "Love Blossoms in the Classroom" and 1996's "Start". He shot to fame with 2002's "Winter Sonata", which made him a household name and a "Hallyu star". He used that fame as a springboard a singing career in Japan, where he enjoyed quite a lot of popularity. He had a successful drama hit in 2008's "One Air", and totally stole my heart in 2009's "The Slinghsot", which is one of my (Javabeans) favorite dramas EVER,...More

A collaboration of director Pyo Min-soo and scenarist Song Jae-jung. Even at first glance, SBS TV series "Coffee House" seems like a hybrid drama. And the show, which Pyo himself had said would be "between a sitcom and drama", revealed it contains characters who cannot be classified as being simply funny or serious -- Lee Jin-soo (played by Kang Ji-hwan) hides his fussy personality behind his gentle smile and Han Ji-won (Jeong Woong-in) believes he stands alone in the center of the world. That is why "Coffee House", now into its fifth episode, may be sort of a challenge that its crew and actors are taking on. They revealed what that challenge means for them and how they hope to be perceived during a press conference held at its set in the city of Paju in the Gyeonggi Province on Monday,...More

An ounce of romance, another ounce of comedy and three ounces of fantasy are what usually make up a romantic comedy. Thanks to viewers' fantasy that the main character of a drama 'does not have to worry about making a living and has looks good enough to get him by anywhere', Jin-soo (played by Kang Ji-hwan), a young and good-looking free-spirited best-selling novelist who is so fickle that he will decide not to attend his own book signing event for no particular reason, regards an unproperly sharpened pencil as a more serious issue than a signing contract,...More

"I honestly like that girl. The girl with the red candy, I really like her". The drama begins with the shabby-looking Jae-bak (played by Lee Jae-ryong) stumbling down the center of downtown. Jae-bak, in his 40s, is living a boring and stifling life as a salesman of a small publishing company, father to two children of which one is a son in high school and daughter which came much later along, and frequently mentions divorce to his wife. His only pleasure in life is gazing at Yoo-hee, (played by Park Si-yeon) an employee of an associated company, who rides the same subway as him every day and night,...More

SBS' "Coffee House" is the second 'House' series from director Pyo Min-so and even in its production stage it is already causing a stir among the audience with its stars including Kang Ji-hwan's return to the small screen and the debut of T-ara member Ham Eun-jeong as the leading actress. Ham plays the role of Seung-yeon who is an amateur in life living with no set goals while preparing for the level 9 public official test and after she meets a perfectionist novelist Jin-soo (played by Kang Ji-hwan), decides to endure the pain in order to become a professional. Below are the excerpts from the press conference for the new drama "Coffee House" with Korean actors Kang Ji-hwan, Ham Eun-jeong, Park Si-yeon and Jeong Woong-in. 10: Could you explain a bit about the characters you will be playing? Kang Ji-hwan (Kang): I will be playing the role of Jin-soo who is a novelist. He is the most unusual and sort of four-dimensional type of character I have ever played before. I've been putting a lot of effort to give my character more personality by meeting with the director a lot of times since the planning stages of the drama,...More
Pyo says "Coffee House" is "in between sitcom and drama" 2010/05/12, Source,
"Coffee House" director Pyo Min-soo [Chae Ki-won/10Asia]
Joint press interview with director Pyo Min-soo of SBS TV series "Coffee House" Director Pyo Min-soo described the characters in upcoming SBS TV series "Coffee House" as people who "are free from certain restrictions". As a matter of fact, all his previous dramas were too different and various to be put into a single category. While KBS TV series "Full House" and MBC's "What Star Did You Come From" were romantic comedies, KBS' "In-soon is Pretty" was a unique drama which told about a character growing up and "The World That They Live In" in many angles shed light onto the loves and heartbreaks that characters working at a TV broadcasting station experience. In "Coffee House", director Pyo Min-soo tries to "prove that this drama is different from previous ones" by bringing realistic elements of a sitcom into the show such as incorporating the actor's real-life personalities and props. Through female character Seung-yeon's (played by Ham Eun-jeong) transformation from an amateur to a professional working woman, Pyo tries to show a type of professional who is able to enjoy pain. At the drama's press conference held on May 10, the director shared his insight on how he tried to differentiate "Coffee House",...More

On the other hand, a white mini dress that cannot be depicted weather it should be sexy or chic, was voted worst for Park Si-yeon. In between, good dresser was Han Chae-yeong for her black flashy long dress. Her spangles saved her!
And the bad dresser was Kong Hyo-jin for way-too-plain pink dress. She did not bring up any uniqueness to her fashionista reputation!
However, despite all these ratings, they are truly beauties.,...More
