Korean cartoons grow up and into lucrative animation industry

An old, driverless car approaches a young man, suddenly stands up, and transforms itself into a tall, talking robot armed with never-before-seen technology.

This is a scene from "Transformers", the recent Hollywood blockbuster directed by Michael Bay. The show features robots that can change themselves into any kind of vehicle to fight against evil robots out to takeover earth.

The movie and the original 1980s cartoon on which it is based captivated many robot enthusiasts, young and old.

The creative power behind the Transformers is Korean animator Nelson Shin, 67, the producer of the original Transformers cartoon and director of the 1986 Transformers movie. Dubbed "god of animators" in South Korea", Shin and the staff at his studio AKOM in Korea have also been drawing famous U.S. cartoon characters from "The Simpsons", "Dilbert" and "Pink Panther".

Modern Twist of Hanbok Captures Youngsters

When the MBC drama "Gung", or "Princess Hours", was aired early last year, it quickly became a hit. It wasn't just the fact that the TV series was based on a popular comic book by Park So-hee about a royal family in Korea that kept viewers coming back for more.

The stylish sets and fashionable costumes also caught the eye of many viewers. The feminine, modern hanbok-inspired dresses worn by Yoon Eun-hye as a modern-day Korean princess attracted much attention.

Not many people know the designer behind the stylish, yet distinctly Korean costumes that were truly befitting of a modern royal family.

Designer Bae Young-jin created costumes that combined elements of the traditional hanbok with a modern sensibility. It was her background as a hanbok designer that got the attention of the drama producers to ask her to make the costumes for the hit series.

Se7en fails to impress viewers

"Gung (Princess Hours)" was a major hit television drama last year, propelling Yoon Eun-hye and Joo Ji-hoon into stardom. This time, it is K-pop star Se7en's turn to cash in on the popularity of the romantic comedy period drama, but early signs are ominous - at least for now.

Last Thursday, "Gung S" ("Prince Hours") featuring Se7en recorded an 11.7 percent viewer rating, according to TNS Media. The figure means the ambitious television drama of MBC is stuck with the lowest ranking while its competitors from rival stations sprinted ahead.

"Gung S" posted a 15.3 percent rating on its debut on Jan. 10, thanks largely to the attention of viewers who remember the innovative storyline and entertaining characters in its original drama series.

But rating quickly began to decline, with viewers and critics pointing to the not-so-innovative plot and poor acting performances of the main characters including Se7en.

'Princess Hours', 'Marine Blues' Selected Best Comic Work and Character

"Princess Hours" by Park So-hee and "Marine Blues" by Kim's Licensing have been selected best comic work and character by Netizens, according to an online survey by the Korea Culture & Content Agency.

Having begun printing in July 2002, "Princess Hours" has been chosen as the best comic book for four consecutive years since 2003. Last year, it was made into a drama, which also became a hit.

"Marine Blues" are characters from the online cartoon with the same title ( http://www.marineblues.net ) by Jeong Cheol-yeon. Kim's Licensing is in charge of turning characters into commercial goods such as mobile games and toys.

Thinking Out of the Box Proves a Success for Hit Drama

In a fantasy MBC drama "Kung (Palace "Princess Hours")", modern day Seoul is still ruled by a monarchical government. The heir to the throne is an unhappy prince named Shin-yi, who gives into the ways of royal life while secretly dreaming of becoming a film director.

His life changes when he meets his bride-to-be, a bubbly, high school girl.

The marriage between the two is an arranged affair agreed upon by their grandfathers years before they could have a say in it.

MBC makes the out of the ordinary story of Shin-yi (Joo Ji-hoon) and Chae-kyung (Yoon Eun-hye) work with the help of cinematic imagination for the primetime hit drama.

The exquisite interior design of the set of the modern-day royal palace featured in the production is being credited as one of the crucial factors in the drama's popularity.
