'May 18', a film which attracted 7.3 million moviegoers last year and was chosen by audience members as the Best Film of 2007, will open in theaters in Japan in May.

The film will be distributed by Japan's leading film production and distribution company Kadokawa Pictures. The PG-12 rated film will open in numerous cinemas around Tokyo, including Shinjuku and Shibuya.

The film features some of Korea's top actors, including Kim Sang-kyeong, Ahn Seong-gi, Lee Yo-won, Lee Joon-ki, Park Cheol-min and Park Won-sang. Prior to its official release in Japan, the film will first be introduced to Japanese movie fans at the 18th annual Yubari International Fantastic Film Festival in Hokkaido, Japan for five days from March 19. ...

Mee-suk (Moon So-ri), a 34-year-old veteran handball player, wins a semi-professional handball tournament, but the same day she hears her team's going to disband.
That's bad enough, but it's nothing compared to four years ago when she won a gold medal at the Barcelona Olympics in 1992.
When Mee-suk came back home proudly wearing her Olympic gold, the rest of the country seemed indifferent.
Handball had not captured the imagination of the country.
Mee-suk, starring in Yim Soon-rae's film, "Forever the Moment", which was released last Thursday, suffers even more setbacks. Her husband (Park Won-sang), a former handball player, runs away from debts brought on by a failed business, and Mee-suk starts working at a mall as a shop assistant.
Mee-suk's life takes a turn when Hye-kyung (Kim Jeong-eun) takes over as the newly appointed national handball coach for the 2004 Athens Olympics.
Hye-kyung persuades Mee-suk to come out of her retirement from the game and join the national team....

"May 18" demonstrates the power of cinema as it halts the inevitable passage of time with its clutch on the immortal spirit of its characters. Depicting the harrowing events of the 1980 Gwangju Democratization Movement, the film paints a colorful portrait of life during the fateful period and painfully evokes a fading scar in modern history. It pays homage to the unnamed men, women and children whose lives were forever altered by the turmoil.

MAY 17: Military top dog Chun Doo-hwan (who would shortly become president, 1980-88), enforces martial law.

MAY 18: Military troops suppress pro-democracy student uprisings, including that of Chonnam (Jeonnam) National University in Gwangju.

Orphaned taxi driver Min-wu (Kim Sang-kyeong) had lived each day humbly and conscientiously, so that his studious younger brother Jin-wu (Lee Joon-ki) can enter college, while providing free rides for the lovely nurse Sin-ae (Lee Yo-won).

In January, Cine 21, a film magazine, surveyed readers to find out which event in modern Korean history they wanted to see depicted in a movie. Among the 542 people who answered, 41.5 percent picked the Gwangju Democratic Movement of May 1980.
At the end of this month director Kim Ji-hoon will satisfy their wishes with his new film titled "May 18". The Korean title of the movie refers to the code name for the military strategy that the regime initiated at 3 p.m. on May 18 to block civilian protest against the military regime.
"May 18" is director Kim's second film. His first was "Mokpo, Gangster's Paradise" (2004). The new film will star Ahn Seong-gi, Kim Sang-kyeong, and Lee Yo-won.
The JoongAng Ilbo spoke to the director.
"I came across the Gwangju incident when I entered Hanyang University", Kim said. "Until then, I had thought that the movement was just a rioters' rebellion. I was embarrassed by my ignorance and indifference".

"Bewitching Attraction", released on March 16, is a movie name designed to seduce filmgoers. Together with a poster of its characters in suggestive poses, the movie promises naughtiness.

Of course, there's the standard fare of tumbles in bed and lots of skin. But to get to the conclusion, the poster is a misrepresentation. The film doesn't heat up your blood; it makes your temples throb trying to figure things out.

Eun-suk (Moon So-ri) is a professor of fabric dyeing and a green activist in a small province, enjoying the endless line of adoring men at her feet. Eun-suk has an affair with a married man named Kim PD (Park Won-sang) at a television station, but rejects the entreaties of elementary school teacher Yoo (Yoo Seung-mok), who loves her. One day, a lecturer of drawing named Seok-gyu (Ji Jin-hee) comes to the same university. Eun-suk is in a state of consternation, as Seok-gyu has her past, every nook and cranny, searched.
