[Funcurve Review] "Please Come Back, Mister" 2016/11/19,
To Die For
"Please Come Back, Mister" has an unusual premise about two men who die and are reincarnated to right the wrongs they made before their deaths. The drama tells the story from the deceased's point of view, as opposed to the common way of telling it from the perspective of those who were left behind. Through this drama, I got to experience that death is painful for both the deserted and the deceased,...More
Rain and Kim Tae-hee, quality time 2016/06/26, Source,
Singer and actor Rain and his girlfriend Kim Tae-hee spent a meaningful birthday.
Rain who turned 34 on the 25th, had a good time with his girlfriend Kim Tae-hee. He was abroad for a long time because of his world tour and Kim Tae-hee was busy with her advertisements so they weren't able to get together for a while. The trip to Jeju Island in May was also a tough one to fit their schedules,...More

[HanCinema's Drama Review] "Please Come Back, Mister" 2016/04/23,
Korean dramas making abrupt changes is something audiences have grown used to, but one of the latest variations of this bad habit has been radically changing a drama's presentation and tone from the cheerful to the melodramatic very early on. "Please Come Back, Mister" felt like such a refreshing change to that. The drama does a lot of things well. Unfortunately, it also makes so many big mistakes that it ultimately ruins a lot of the good it had previously managed to build,...More
[HanCinema's Drama Review] "Please Come Back, Mister" Episode 16 Final 2016/04/14,
This is it, the final confrontation, where among other things, the full background behind Gi-tak's death is confirmed. After the rather goofy way Yeong-soo died I have to admit I never really considered the idea that Gi-tak's death was anything more complicated than what it looked like- a high speed chase gone wrong. That notion seemed bolstered by how Gi-tak himself lost interest in searching for his real killer fairly quickly. Yet in the end, Gi-tak is forced to decide whether he's willing to break the revenge rule or not,...More
[HanCinema's Drama Review] "Please Come Back, Mister" Episode 15 2016/04/14,
I find that watching "Please Come Back, Mister" without a sense of context tends to be instructive for getting a feel of the drama. As per the last cliffhanger, there was a big car accident and Yeong-soo, rather than do the sensible thing and go to the hospital, stumbles around through sheer force of will to his intended destination. One might think from that much that there was a serious romance going on between him and Da-hye, rather than the deliberately ambiguous mess we actually ended up with. And then Gi-tak shows up using the cute "dearest spouse" form of personal address,...More
[HanCinema's Drama Review] "Please Come Back, Mister" Episode 14 2016/04/07,
Gi-tak is dangled in front of the fire like a damsel in distress here, and while he's not quite exactly a damsel, the fact that Gi-tak looks like a damsel does make matters somewhat awkward. The sexual tension between him and former gangster buddy Ji-hoon has always been noticeable, and there's some pretty unsettling transgender questions at play here. When you like the woman you like because she reminds you of a guy, and is in fact simply that same guy in a woman's body, does that make you gay?,...More
[HanCinema's Drama Review] "Please Come Back, Mister" Episode 13 2016/04/06,
It turns out that Han-na was just trying to see her real dad, Yeong-soo, all along, in typical chidlike uncertainty. The payoff for all that extended running around ends up being more tender scenes as Yeong-soo tries to do right by his family and with a little supernatural help, is able to comfort them somewhat about the fact that he's dead. It's all kind of sweet, actually, albeit somewhat annoying since there's not much left in the way of plot progression,...More
[HanCinema's Drama Review] "Please Come Back, Mister" Episode 12 2016/03/31,
So, it turns out that Hong-nan is not just some random identity that Gi-tak made up to explain how his new female body could know so much about Gi-tak's life. Hong-nan is, in fact, Gi-tak's actual estranged sister from childhood, and by sheer dumb coincidence, it turns out that Da-hye is the real Hong-nan. If you're wondering why this revelation is important, well, keep wondering. All "Please Come Back, Mister" does with this new information is set up a few tender scenes,...More
[HanCinema's Drama Review] "Please Come Back, Mister" Episode 10 2016/03/24,
Da-hye finally directly addresses the creepiness inherent in Yeong-soo's position of trying to constantly hit on a widow. While this doesn't smooth over all the ethical problems involved in Yeong-soo's behavior, I'm grateful that "Please Come Back, Mister" is at least acknowledging the very uncomfortable position in which Da-hye has been put. Some self-awareness can go a long way to making a problematic story seem more harmless and less deserving of over-analysis,...More
[HanCinema's Drama Review] "Please Come Back, Mister" Episode 9 2016/03/23,
Yeong-soo really does not appear to have thought through the ramifications of his trying to romance Da-hye in Hae-joon's body. Da-hye is a grieving widow. It would be a little disconcerting if she was actually into Hae-joon's attempts at sexual harassment. Compared to Hae-joon, Ji-hoon's come-ons are fairly tactful. After all we've seen him do, I never expected Ji-hoon would come out looking like the better man this episode. Naturally, it helps that even if Yeong-soo succeeds, Da-hye would just be heartbroken again since Hae-joon will have to disappear without explanation, lest Yeong-soo break the rules,...More
[HanCinema's Drama Review] "Please Come Back, Mister" Episode 8 2016/03/17,
Yeong-soo and Gi-tak had a pretty successful run last episode in terms of accomplishing their goals. The problem that brings up is, if they've already mostly accomplished what they needed to do, then why are they bothering to stick around in the world of the living? Yeong-soo and Gi-tak will have to go back sooner or later. And until then they're at risk of breaking one of Maya's rules- a penalty which is finally elucidated and which Yeong-soo and Gi-tak will have to struggle to avoid enacting,...More
[HanCinema's Drama Review] "Please Come Back, Mister" Episode 7 2016/03/16,
It turns out that Ji-hoon really is somewhat villainous. At first I was wondering whether "Please Come Back, Mister" was doing the whole thing where the turncoat you know is worse than the explicitly evil bad guys, but no, as it turns out, the explicitly evil bad guys are still pretty explicitly evil. This is somewhat impressive considering how a lot of their villainy is by accident. When it comes to I-yeon's crooked relative by marriage Hyeok (played by Park Min-woo), I doubt we'd even care about his gangster problems except that Gi-tak mnaged to get sucked into that situation somehow,...More
[HanCinema's Drama Review] "Please Come Back, Mister" Episode 6 2016/03/10,
Yeong-soo continues the mission here to harass his wife and co-worker regarding a perceived romantic entanglement between the two. When it comes to Ji-hoon (played by Yoon Park), I can almost be all right with it, because Ji-hoon is definitely up to something suspicious. But Da-hye is a grieving widow working in a department store that may have murdered her husband. Doesn't the woman have enough to deal with? Is this really the time for abusive pep talks? Even bearing in mind that Yeong-soo has friendly moments too they don't cancel out his often terrifying disposition,...More
[HanCinema's Drama Review] "Please Come Back, Mister" Episode 5 2016/03/09,
For their superficially wildly different personalities, Yeong-soo and Gi-tak have one thing in common- they're both prone to jumping to wild outrageous conclusions based on limited evidence. Come to think of it they even acted this way back in the first episode, when they were still alive. It just didn't come off as quite so ridiculous back then because Kim In-kwon looks like a pathetic guy who can be intimidated, and Kim Soo-ro looks like an ultra-masculine man who is not to be trifled with. Rain and Oh Yeon-seo, by contrast, look like they should have some shred of classy dignity,...More
[HanCinema's Drama Review] "Please Come Back, Mister" Episode 4 2016/03/03,
First, the good news. It would appear that the epilogue segments which involve Yeong-soo's Rain doppleganger getting railroaded so as to avoid interference with the main plot will in fact be a recurring feature in "Please Come Back, Mister". There's just something so delightfully sadistic about watching this poor man deal with constant artifically induced crises. Especially since it gives him almost as many excuses to take his shirt off as it does for Yeong-soo,...More
[HanCinema's Drama Review] "Please Come Back, Mister" Episode 2 2016/02/25,
Maya (played by Ra Mi-ran) is the individual in charge of sending dead people back to the world of living temporarily. She's frustrated by how Yeong-soo and Gi-tak have interrupted her planned vacation, and warns these two that the reliving process is a fairly unsatisfying one with many arbitrary rules. Following that Maya nonetheless plops Yeong-soo in the body of Hae-joon (played by Rain), and Gi-tak in the body of Hong-nan (played by Oh Yeon-seo),...More

Yeong-soo (played by Kim In-kwon) is a nebbish department store manager who belatedly realizes his bad night was in fact much worse than just a drunk blackout. He soon meets up with Gi-tak (played by Kim Soo-ro), an ex-convict turned chef who is now in the same mortal predicament. Together they...flash back to the days right before the opener, because as this is the first episode, "Please Come Back, Mister" has to explain its premise and more importantly, why we as viewers should care,...More

It was not one of Park's most profitable, but "I'm a Cyborg, But That's OK" possesses an invigorating type of magic only this master could muster. It tells the tale of a troubled young girl (Yeong-goon played by Im Soo-jeong) who is recently admitted to a mental institution after nearly electrocuting herself to death. There she serendipitously stumbles into an odd relationship with an anti-social schizophrenic (Rain as Il-soon) obsessed with oral hygiene and thievery, and shares with him her secret of being cyborg. [HanCinema's Film Review] "R2B: Return to Base": Come Rain, Come Shine? 2012/12/15,
Film: "R2B: Return to Base" (R2B: 리턴투베이스)Director: Kim Dong-weonStars:Rain, Sin Se-kyeong, Yoo Joon-sang, Kim Sung-soo, Lee Ha-na & Lee Jong-sukReview Score: 3 / 5
Also Try: "The Red Scarf", "71-Into the Fire" or "Taegukgi"
Shin Sang-ok's 1964 film "The Red Muffler" was the first film to be released nationally in Japan and, prior to its release there, it was also shown at the Asia-Pacific Film Festival in Taipei. It was this acclaimed classic, this "expertly-filmed motion picture", that inspired Kim Dong-weon's 2012 action drama "R2B: Return to Base". The film was made with $10,000,000 and Time magazine's 2011 'most influential person' and Korean superstar Rain. However, it also had the unfortunate luck of being released alongside Choi Dong-hoon's record breaking "The Thieves", as well as the historical comedy "The Grand Heist" (which itself brought in close to 5 million admissions)-it lasted three weeks before it fell off the radar.
"R2B: Return to Base" is, if anything, a great spectacle. There are incredibly gorgeous jet fighter scenes that seem to mirror the complexity and intensity of the stories told by some of the WWII veterans on the History channel; its star, Rain, is involved in a number of retro-style music montages as well as an angry/passionate topless locker-room brawl; and there is a love story in there somewhere that keeps you from feeling cheated. It's high-speed entertainment that catches the eye and quickens the pulse, but does little for the genre in Korea and even less for Rain's filmography,...More

Why Psy and not JYP? 2012/09/21, Source,
By Jason Lim I just watched Psy perform live in New York City's Rockefeller Center on NBC's Today Show, a venue usually reserved for the most popular of international singers. Korean films' renaissance with box office success 2012/09/01, Source,
The Korean film industry is having a renaissance recently, with renewed success at the domestic box office. Local films topped the country's top-ten box office chart last weekend, with Korean movies taking up all first four places in ticket sales. According to statistics provided by the Korean Film Council on August 27, nearly eight out of ten moviegoers watched Korean films last weekend. The four Korean blockbuster films - "Neighbors", "The Grand Heist", "The Thieves", and "R2B: Return to Base" in that order - made up 77 percent of ticket sales over the weekend from August 24 through 26. It can be almost called a resurgence of Korean films as they are taking away ticket sales from recent Hollywood blockbusters such as Total Recall, Step Up Revolution, and The Dark Night Rises. Such success comes for the first time in three years since 2009 when two Korean films - "Take Off" and "Haeundae" - swept the Korean box office,...More

After last week's close race for the top, Kim Joo-ho's "The Grand Heist" managed to get one back on Choi's blockbuster hit. By Andrew Salmon Tension and violence sell, but this may not be apparent to the vast majority of fans of "hallyu", the much-discussed "Korean Wave" of pop culture that has swept outward from the shores of the peninsula since, roughly, the turn of the millennium. The two standout genres of hallyu, in sales terms, are clearly K-pop and K-soaps. Of the former, Korean management companies have come up with a winning formula, churning out a range of cute, well-trained and above all wholesome boy- and girl-bands whose appeal is very different from the rebellious, opinionated, drug-spattered figures who stagger across the stage of Western rock 'n roll. Soap is similarly sugar-coated: Most dramas are centered upon pretty boys and pretty girls in pretty clothes and pretty houses/landscapes engaging in genteel, "no-sex-please-we're-Korean" romances,...More

Thanks to the power of YouTube, curious music fans in countries such as Brazil and Italy can hear the music and see the performances. Soon they make their own online bulletin boards to discuss what they have seen. They may even try to learn Korean to understand the lyrics and even put up subtitles for others,...More

Is Big Bang Ready for the West? 2012/04/05, Source,
Idol group Big Bang are certainly getting their fair share of attention these days, but they are getting their just due; their latest mini-album 'Alive' is breaking records on Korean music charts and earning critical praise for its six singles on the EP. Their "concept" this go round is one of their most...unique so far- tattoos, oxygen masks, blue hair, the usual mélange from the YG stylist closet, and whatever G-Dragon happens to feel like throwing on when he wakes up in the morning. However, as has been closely noted by V.I.Ps (official Big Bang fan club), the music is what is attracting all the attention – from popular American blogs, sites, and international music insiders. They broke the Billboard 200, and placed high on other album charts (Independent, World, Heatseekers) demonstrating a pretty widespread appeal. It's interesting given that while it appears many in K-pop are still trying to find the magic formula for recognition in the West (Rain, BoA, Wonder Girls, Girls' Generation) it seems as these guys are getting it and barely trying,...More

It was true that Lee belonged in the heartthrob category, good looking enough to star as a hero in the MBC drama "I Love You, Don't Cry" (2009) but at the same time still lacking in presence outside the screen. Korean singer Rain [Chae Ki-won/10Asia]
Asian pop sensation Rain says the inspiration for his latest single "Love Song" came from his own experiences. The artist made the remark during a press conference for his new album "BACK TO THE BASICS" held Monday at the KT Building in Youido. He is set to return to the Korean music scene with his special album due out April 7 featuring the title track "Love Song", the first in two years since releasing his last studio album "Rainism" in 2008. Below are excerpts from his press conference. 10: Your first song off the new album is a ballad instead of a dance song and you have taken on an androgynous image which is different from your previous images. What was the reason behind this attempt? Rain: I want to show a definite change because it has been eight years since I made my debut. I had recorded "Love Song" when "Rainism" was unveiled. With "Song" I took out the embellishments and released something light. I was looking to perform an authentic ballad. After promoting “Song,” I am thinking of promoting "Hip Song", a dance track from the album. My androgynous image is a ground breaking attempt. I wanted to stimulate the listeners through my eyebrows, vest, leather pants and hat which are impossible to match with the bling bling music. Releasing the music will be the first round and I want to show new things through my performances on stage. I want to put on a performance that will satisfy the audience's ears and eyes,...More

10: How long will you promote your album and do you have any plans on appearing in variety programs? Rain: Since my debut I had received lots of love through variety programs. I want to show everything that I can while promoting this album because I intended on going back to my original resolution and work hard on this release. As long as the audience don't feel uncomfortable about it, I want to be in as many variety shows as possible. I plan on promoting my album for about two months before I begin shooting a drama and movie. I have an upcoming tour in Japan so I will be visiting several cities in the country but I think I'll be able to manage both by going back and forth till early May,...More

Actor Kim Nam-gil [Chae Ki-won/10Asia]
It may seem foolish to identify an actor as a role he played but Kim Nam-gil is similar in many ways to the character Bidam he played in MBC TV series "Queen Seon-deok" this year. His ability to throw in jokes in between the dialogue on every occasion he gets while also being able to go back straight to being serious and genuine to give heartfelt and mature responses for the actual interview, proved Kim is great at handling various situations. "I had once talked about this with actor Jung Jae-young -- people who grew up wealthy can understand those who grew up hungry but not sympathize with them. And vice versa, those who haven't been wealthy before cannot be aware of or know the difficulties wealthy people face despite seemingly living in abundance. Even I myself think "If I only had money. You can do everything in Korea if you have money. What could be so tough about it?" But my parents let me experience a lot of things such as part-time jobs so bit by bit, I think I've received a lot of help getting where I am in terms of my acting",...More

News 1. Actress Jang Ja-yeon commits suicide
Actress Jang Ja-yeon [KBS]
On March 7, one little known actress wrote in her suicide note, "I am a weak, powerless actress. I want to be free from this pain" and killed herself. It was actress Jang Ja-yeon, who was appearing in KBS TV series "Boys over Flowers" at the time. The suicide note, which was 12 pages long on A4-sized paper, explained that she had been physically abused by her agency, forced to drink and provide sexual services. It also listed names of high-ranking executives in the industry, including a head of media company, television drama director and owners of business companies. People started calling the note "The Jang Ja-yeon List". The incident brought to surface how badly aspiring actresses and female celebrities in general have been violated and the ugly power of the media. But due to slow, passive investigation by the Korean authorities, the truth never came to light. Of all people who were under investigation, only two people involved in the incident -- former head of Jang's agency and former manager who exposed Jang's suicide notes -- were indicted and the suspects whose names were listed in the documents were all cleared of charges and let go. Was the death of Jang Ja-yeon a suicide or a homicide?,...More
