Biography
SHIM was born in 1958. He made his debut as a comedian in 1982 with the Korea Broadcasting Service and won the KBS Best Comedian of the Year Award in 1988. In 1990, he received the KBS Performer of the Year Award, with over 90 motion picture appearances and as a producer. In 1993, he established Younggu Art(Zeronine Entertainment) and released < Younggu and Dinosaur ZuZu > as director and lead actor. he directed eight films from 1994 to 1999 and starred in most of them. He was given the New Intellectual Award for being 'a model for the new millenium' in 1999, and the same year Asiaweek selected him as a Leader of the Millenium Society and Culture.
The fight and race over what is believed to be a valuable map - titled "The Good, the Bad, the Weird" (Joheun Nom, Nappeun Nom, Isanghan Nom) - entered cinemas with its guns drawn and left its competition behind in clouds of gunfire. The kimchi western dug up treasure when it surpassed the 2 million landmark in its opening weekend. Its distributor CJ Entertainment announced on Monday morning a total of 2,186 million viewers since its release on Thursday July 17.
Director KIM Ji-woon's US$ 17 M star vehicle (LEE Byeong-heon, SONG Kang-ho, and JEONG Woo-seong) grossed US$ 14 million over the weekend alone. "The Good, the Bad, the Weird" recorded the third highest opening day with 400,000 tickets. Top opener in Korea is SHIM Hyung-rae's "D-War" (470,000) and BONG Joon-ho's "The Host" (Gwemool) comes second (450,000). Getting a comfy seat at an air-conditioned movie theater is a fine choice; watching indie-style films is an excellent choice.
The second annual Nextplus Summer Film Festival is targeting those who want some cinematic relief from the sizzling weather. Nextplus will kick off on July 25, featuring 220 films that tend to push the artistic envelope on the silver screen.
"Although art-house films do not attract a huge crowd in Korea, we believe that such high-quality movies deserve an important place in the country's culture industry", said Korean Film Council deputy director Shin Sung-min at a news conference Tuesday.
The filmfest, jointly organized by the Korean Film Council and the Seoul Metropolitan Government, will be held in the Seoul, Incheon and Gyeonggi areas from July 25 through Aug. 7, while theaters in other areas are scheduled to join the festival Aug. 1-14.

Hit thriller, "The Chaser", the top Korean film at the box office for the first half of 2008, was also tops last Friday at the nation's annual film awards fest, the 45th Daejong (Grand Bell) film festival, held in southern Seoul. Director NA Hong-jin's debut feature picked up six awards including Best Picture, Director, Cinematography and Actor for KIM Yoon-seok).
Actor KIM, known for numerous supporting roles, won for his first lead performance as the cop-turned-pimp who is hot on the trail of a serial-killer played by the equally gifted HA Jeong-woo. KIM also won the BMW Popularity award at Daejon. "The Chaser" went on to captured the Best Production award as well.
The Best Actress award went to KIM Yoon-jin for her role in another successful thriller, "Seven Days", a tale of kidnapping and blackmail. SHIM Hyung-rae's "D-War" will receive a wide release in China on May 11. The monster film will screen in hundred Chinese cities, including the major cities Beijing and Shanghai, on 500 screens.
"D-War" was a blockbuster in Korea and the U.S. last year. "D-War" holds the record number of screens for a Korean film in the U.S., namely 2200. The biggest Korean hit in China is BONG Joon-ho's "The Host", another monster film which was released in Chinese cinemas in 2007.
"D-War" is Korea's most expensive film and boasts spectacular special effects. Critics were less enthusiastic, but the film garnered US$ 11 million at the U.S. box office. In Korea, the film attracted seven million viewers. The film is English spoken and stars Hollywood actor Jason Behr. The film was shot in LA and the plot revolves around a legend about dragons who return to present day LA.
The next station for Shim Hyung-rae's "D-War" is China.
The film will be screened in some 600 theaters in 100 cities in China, including the two major cities of Beijing and Shanghai.
Shim is hoping for a continuation of hallyu, or the Korean wave.
"Korean films should play a big role in the Chinese film industry", he said during a press conference in Beijing on Sunday.
Last year, "D-War" blasted into the United States. It was shown in more than 2,200 theaters and earned $11 million.
