It's been 12 years since Lee Ji-hoon's debut, but he is 'still' careful to define himself. The word 'still' may sound odd, but that seems most fitting. It's because he has overcome dangers that don't happen easily, and he is beginning to bear fruit for his longtime prayers. Lee Ji-hoon, who is turning thirty this year, says that his life so far has only been an introduction.

"Cherry Tomato" depicts the poverty-stricken life of an old man and his granddaughter in a realistic way that evokes a strong sense of sympathy. But the ultimate emotion the film triggers is, for better or worse, helplessness.

The debut feature by former television producer Jeong Yeong-bae wastes no time highlighting the key theme: poverty. Park-gu (played by veteran actor Sin Goo) is barely scraping by with his granddaughter Da-seong (Kim Hyang-ki), and their life is unbearably miserable.

Living in a shabby single-room rented house, they do not have enough money to feed themselves. Park-gu works as a porter for a shopping mall in Seoul but he soon finds himself kicked out of the place. In his 70s, Park-gu tries to survive by collecting papers and recyclable stuffs on the street, but the money he earns is always too small to buy a decent meal.

At Crime Scene Without Leads, Suspect Arrested in Two Hours-

If you consider the story of a film as bones and the actors as meat, director Jang Jin's fifth feature film, "The Big Scene", is a juicy piece of meat without the needless fat and only full of red meat. It doesn't have colorful food decorations (meaning special effects or action scenes) or aroma-releasing spices (fancy art or visual design), but this piece of meat gets sweeter as you chew.

"The Big Scene" is the most popular of Jang's films. Characters formerly seen in his previous films--such as a man who ends up being arrested after accidentally passing by one murder scene after another in "Amazing Men", a floppy spy from North Korea who gets robbed in a taxi in "The Spy", or hit men who offer a discount for student clients in "Guns and Talks"--are no where in sight. This time, a prosecutor, a suspect, and witnesses tell a very believable story about a murder in this investigation film.

The relationship between the two Koreas may be a serious issue in the real world, but in recent years it has become a source for lowbrow comedies for the domestic film industry.

The latest to use our neighbors of the North for laughs is "A Bold Family" - "Super Family". The film, which opens today, tells of a pair of brothers who try to convince their North Korea-born father that his dream of unification has taken place.

The plot will remind many of "Goodbye, Lenin", a German film that played in Korea late last year, except the point in that movie was to pretend German reunification didn't happen. But in cinema the difference between unification and division turns out to be little, as both films mine the same quirky side of communism for its humor.
