New York film festival showcases Korean shorts

Award-winning short films of various genres from Korea's Mise-en-scene's Genre Film Festival (MGFF) will be invited to the 6th annual New York Asian Film Festival (NYAFF) from June 22 to July 8 in New York City.

Launched by the Subway Cinema in 2002, the New York Asian Film Festival is a widely acclaimed, leading event that introduces an eclectic sampling of current Asian films.

The NYAFF provides Korean filmmakers an excellent opportunity to screen their works in the United States. In the past, "My Sassy Girl" and "Please Teach Me English", two trendy Korean hits at home, won over enough viewers at the NYAFF to take the Audience Award.

The MGFF promotes talented young Korean filmmakers and will mark its sixth year in June. This year, the NYAFF has partnered with the MGFF to introduce award-winning movies as well as new works by Park Chan-wook, Ryoo Seung-wan, E. J-Yong (Lee Jae-yong) and other renowned Korean directors.

Sales at the Asian Film Market

This year's Pusan International Film Festival witnessed the opening of the inaugural Asian Film Market, a comprehensive film industry hub which covers many aspects of filmmaking from pre-sales, sales, and financing to production and post facilities as well as a casting network for up-and-coming stars.

In terms of deal-making, sales companies reported that not many deals were signed, however agreements and project advancement took place. The absence of many European buyers due largely to the opening of the Rome International Film Festival during the same period, was also noted, however those from Europe who did come had first pick and were pleased with their findings.

Among Korean deals made, CJ's martial arts fantasy The Restless and box office record-breaker The Host were bought from Cineclick Asia by Singapore's Queen Imperial for rights in Indonesia's growing market. KOFIC announces recipients of indie DVD support fund

The Korean Film Council has selected ten works to be released on DVD as part of the 2006 DVD Production/Distribution Support for Independent Films. The recipients were selected out of 24 submissions, and will be made available for sale to the general public in special DVD box sets.

"Shin Sung-il is Lost", released on February 16, is an independent film brimming with imagination.

It was shot on budget, too.

Director Sin Jae-in, who received accolades for his short films, "Talented Boy Lee Jun Seop" and "His Truth Marches On" that he made soon after graduating from the Korean Film Academy, made "Shin Sung-il is Lost", his first feature film, on a budget of just 65 million won. Most of the money came from grants from the film guild.

But his frugality does not affect his creativity. He breaks stereotypes, making even the most boring subjects sizzle.

The film's lead actors are a deep-thinking, lanky boy whose namesake is the romantic heartthrob Shin Sung-il, and an arrogant, stand-offish little girl named Lee Yeong-ae, who says on her first day at an orphanage, "You know what corruption is? Food Is More Than a Metaphor for Maverick Director

Sin Jae-in (36) is one of a tiny handful of women directors in Korea's male-dominated film industry. Her independent production "Shin Sung-il is Lost", which was released on Feb. 16, tells the heartrending story of orphans in a home where appetite for food is considered a sin.

Before the Chosun Ilbo reporter could steer the conversation round to food, Sin proffered the rice rolled in dried laver with tuna, pecan-flavored milk and a ham and cheese sandwich she was balancing with both hands. It would be too early to draw any conclusions, but she explains, "It just so happens that I chose a story about eating among plenty of stories in my mind. By the way, the movie I'm working on right now is about eating as well. This time, it's about zombies eating human flesh".
