[HanCinema's Korea Diaries] "Muju" June 1st-5th 2016/06/24,
I came to Muju to cover the Muju International Film Festival (MIFF), and there's a lot about this festival worth knowing. First off, MIFF is extremely spectator oriented. All the movies are free, even though anything that took place in a theater on the weekend was likely to be sold out. Free shuttle buses come in from Seoul, Daejeon, and Jeonju. And like all film festivals, there are scenes like this where people from behind a table address a crowd about some topic or other. In this case, festival matters are publically discussed by Oh Ji-ho and Son Eun-seo - the celebrity faces of the festival this year,...More
[Guest Review] Tumbleweed 2014/02/28, Source,
In "Tumbleweed", Chang-su (Im Chang-jeong) is the fall guy for a local gang's boss, willing to cop short-term gaol terms in exchange for sums of money he couldn't earn otherwise or through legal means. This might sound like an undesirable lifestyle for most but Chang-su is quite content with his lot, having no dreams or plans for any future career outside of his next imprisonment. Recently returned from his latest stint, he witnesses, by chance, a lover's quarrel that spills out onto the street in front of him,...More
[HanCinema's Box Office Review] 2013.11.29 - 2013.12.01 2013/12/02,
It's not too often that a Korean sci-fi is able to come out ahead, and although Kim Hyeon-seok's "11 AM" did so with the second lowest first-place total this year, it was still able to topple some big events in the process. "11 AM" claimed 377,165 (21.3%) over 512 screens to outplay last week's number one – Kwak Gyeong-taek's "Friends 2" – as well as the not-so-hot "Hunger Games" sequel "Catching Fire". Times are tough at the moment at the Korean box office, and so while the world (the U.S. in particular) is burning up over the Susan Collins's second novel adaptation, the hermit kingdom has withdrawn and spread it limited wealth over just a few worthy features,...More

Who is the queen of the year? 2013/10/02, Source,
What's the exposure code at BIFF this year?

[HanCinema's Film Review] "Private Island" 2013/08/31,
This movie is metaphorical pornography. It's literal pornography, too, and indeed, it's those explicit sex scenes that leave the most deliberate impression, but "Private Island" as a whole is about voyeurism. Three close friends come to Okinawa to have a good time, and that's exactly what happens. Yes, the sex is a probably inevitable outcropping of this, but there's plenty of time spent at the beach, savoring the local food, enjoying the high class services, and engaging in the wild tropical hobbies that presumably make up a fun time at Okinawa.
There were times during this movie where I was wondering whether this was supposed to be an actual narrative film or an incredibly elaborate infomercial dedicated to selling the audience on the concept of a vacation in Okinawa,...More
