  • [HanCinema's Drama Review] "Mimi" Episode 4 Final

    2014/03/14,
This drama ends the same way it began- with all the events bizarrely jumbled out of sequence and a constant lack of clarity as to Min-woo's sanity. But if you've been watching "Mimi" this far none of this is really new. The drama's strange innovative technique is by far its strongest suit, so it's all too fitting that the last episode spends most of its runtime depicting events that happened before the first episode. Also time travel might be involved. Maybe?,...More
  • [HanCinema's Drama Review] "Mimi" Episode 3

    2014/03/07,
I think I've finally figured out why "Mimi" is so weird- it's not a drama, it's a music video. You know how most music videos use visuals that tell a story which kind of sort of has something to do with the lyrics- but not really? That's what "Mimi" is. It's why the drama spends so much time in Min-woo's dreamworld, and often doesn't bother telling us the difference between what's real and what's fantasy. The story is not the point- it's background noise to the music and visuals. All of this works to put Eun-hye in a pretty strange place, because as far as I can tell she's the only character with motivations that make sense. I mean that relatively speaking,...More
  • [HanCinema's Drama Review] "Mimi" Episode 2

    2014/02/28,
I'm reasonably sure at this point that Min-woo is going crazy. Still not so clear on the ghosts. Yes, apparently there is more than one ghost. Don't expect much of an explanation of this, as "Mimi" appears determined to manage its story in terms of abstractions. In many ways this episode is a repeat of the first one. Min-woo has these rather bizarre dreams that seem to be stating something specific, then he goes off and wanders around a bunch of very clean voids for awhile. Most dramas, most media really, are filled with extras,...More
  • [HanCinema's Drama Review] "Mimi" Episode 1

    2014/02/21,
Min-woo (played by Max) is a young webtoon artist. That's about as far as I could get in figuring out what this drama is actually about. I mean, yes, literally speaking, this is a love story about Min-woo's high school days, where he met the titular Mimi (played by Moon Ga-yeong). Almost the entire episode takes place in flashback, at the extremely lonely, empty, clean, and bright school where Min-woo and Mimi first met,...More
