 By Han Sang-heeStaff Reporter Korean actress Jang Jin-yeong passed away Tuesday evening after losing a battle against stomach cancer. She was 35. Jang had been hospitalized in Seoul after her condition recently worsened and doctors had reportedly been giving her morphine and other drugs to relieve the pain. The news of the actress' sudden hospitalization Tuesday startled fans, as it was thought that she was recovering after resting for a month in Los Angeles. Jang was diagnosed with stomach cancer in September last year when she paid a visit to the hospital for a regular checkup. What she thought was a stomach ulcer turned out to be cancer, and Jang has been out of the public eye ever since.  By Kim RahnStaff Reporter A female journalist has received a jail term for falsely accusing actor Song Il-gook of violence. A Seoul high court Wednesday handed down an eight-month prison sentence to 43-year-old Kim Sun-hee. She had been indicted without physical detention for the false accusation charge. Kim sued Song in January last year, claiming that the actor beat her when she tried to interview him near his house in Seoul. She made an entertainment daily reporter write an article titled, "Song beats up a female journalist, having her receive medical treatment for six months". She was indicted for defamation and got a one-year jail term in a lower court. "We could not accept testimonies from other reporter witnesses, as they often changed their testimonies. We do not recognize Kim's claim that the surveillance camera records at Song's apartment were fabricated", the court said.  The state government of Hawaii has designated March 21st as the Song Il-gook Day after the star of "Jumong" and "Land of Wind". The actor will be in Hawaii for three days beginning on March 20 to receive a plaque of appreciation from Hawaiian Governor Linda Lingle and take part in various events. Song is applauded for his role in introducing Korean culture to the people of Hawaii.Following the gubernatorial event on the 21st, Song will attend a talk show with his fans to thank the Hawaiian people for their support and affection. Staff Reporter Korean heartthrobs Daniel Henney and Choi Soo-jong, folk singer Lee Moon-se, musician Kim Yong-woo and explorer Park Young-seok were appointed goodwill ambassadors to publicize Seoul metropolitan city, Wednesday. The "fabulous five" will be promoting different sides of the capital: Lee and Kim will be promoting culture while Henney, Choi and Park will publicize the international aspect of the city. "They are all top-notch celebrities in their fields, with charm and intelligence that could represent Seoul to not only other cities in the nation but to the world", Seoul brand manager Hong Sun-seong said. Some 66 celebrities have decided to let potential compensation for illegal use of their images go to people in need. They include actors Bae Yong-joon, Jeong Woo-seong, So Ji-sub, Kim Myeong-min, Song Il-gook and Jo In-seong and actresses Jeon Do-yeon, Moon Geun-yeong and Kim Tae-hee.
The Seoul High Court announced Monday that it had mediated an agreement between the 66 celebrities and a website they sued to drop the charges if the portal donates W10 million to a social welfare organization by the end of the year. The 66 sued the site after it published personal information and pictures without their consent. In the first instance, the court ruled the portal must pay W1 million in compensation to each suitor -- a total of W66 million.
