Staff Reporter The "Yeongeuk Yeoljeon 2 (A Series of the Best Plays)", which began on Dec. 7, 2007, finally drew its curtains Monday, reinvigorating the faltering theater scene in Daehangno. For the last 13 months, ten plays were performed under the motto of "popularization of the theater arts" by veteran actor and programmer Cho Jae-hyun, along with Dongsoong Art Center's Theater Company to save the sagging theater industry with the star-studded cast. Scoring a big success in economically hard times, the project came four years after 2004's " Yeongeuk Yeoljeon", which put 14 plays on stage. In the closing ceremony at Dongsoong Art Center, actor Song Yeong-chang, who starred in the play "University of Laughs" written by Japanese dramatist Koki Mitani, won the award for best acting and the play (University of Laughs) received the best play award judged by participating actors, staff, reporters and audience members. Stage production entitled 'College of Laughter', starring actors Hwang Jeong-min and Song Yeong-chang will be staged for an extended period of two weeks until December 14 at the Dongsoong Art Center in Seoul.
The play which opened on October 24 is the ninth in a series of productions entitled 'A Festival of Plays' being staged at the art center. So far, the play has recorded an average ticket sales of 94% and has attracted a total of 16,000 audience members since its opening. The play is portrays a seven-hour conflict between a comedy playwright who is trying to maintain the humor in stage productions during a period when comedy was banned during the Second World War and a play censor trying to eliminate all humor from the works. Staff Reporter Renowned movie star and musical actor Hwang Jeong-min will star in a new play, "University of Laughs" written by Japanese dramatist Koki Mitani. The play will be shown in Korea for the first time as the ninth work of the Yeongeuk Yeoljeon 2 (Best Plays Series) programmed by veteran actor Jo Jae-hyeon. The play will be staged at Dongsoong Art Center in central Seoul Oct. 24 to Nov. 30. The piece is a comedy based on the story of an artist's freedom of expression when faced with censorship. The work is a two-man play set over seven days amid World War II in 1940. A young playwright comes up against a government censor to put a comedy on stage. The censor's job is to prevent anything political or taboo from getting into the pre-war media, but this particular censor has a thing against comedy, too.
