One scene kept playing over and over again in the back of my mind while I was watching "Wedding Dress", a recent release starring Song Yoon-ah, who plays a mother with a terminal illness.

Unfortunately, it wasn't a particularly soul-stirring anecdote from the movie, but rather an image of the film's editors gathered at a studio after hours, saying, "Let's cut right here. This is the money shot! Let the tears flood in".

Simply told, film "Wedding Dress" is about a mother who will soon die and her young daughter. But the movie itself is not as simple or cold-hearted as it was just said -- the process of how Go-eun, played by actress Song Yoon-ah and Sorah, by child actor Kim Hyang-ki, are shown spending their remaining time together is sad enough to dry up the viewer's tear ducts. Wedding dress designer Go-eun, who had worked so hard her whole life that she had never packed her daughter's lunchbox before, is diagnosed with stomach cancer one day. When she dies, Sorah will be left alone because her dad passed away much earlier. So Go-woon packs a lunchbox all night long and takes Sorah to the beach to give her daughter memories to cherish after she dies. She also starts making a wedding dress that Sorah will wear one day. Amid the speedy, adventure-packed film releases, "Wedding Dress", a mellow family drama with an andante tempo, seeks to provoke a different sensibility ― to gently pull at the heartstrings of sometimes over-stimulated viewers.

The teary mother-daughter story may be more appropriate for a May release in time for Family Month, and it would have greatly benefitted from some heavy editing to speed up the painful crawling pace and straight-to-DVD movie quality. Nevertheless, compelling child actress Kim Hyang-ki turns cliched predictability into something tastefully classic, and the movie will undoubtedly become a steady cable TV movie listing for the general audience.
