The Eighth Mise-en-Scene Short Film Festival kicked off last Wednesday at CGV Yongsan, central Seoul.
The representative committee chairman this year is Bong Joon-ho, director of the current hit film "Mother". Other renowned filmmakers in Korea attended the opening ceremony Wednesday evening, including directors Park Chan-wook and Heo Jin-ho. Movie stars including Won Bin, Sin Min-ah, Jeong Jae-yeong, Park Hae-il and Kim Joo-hyeok also came to support the festival. A total of 120 Korean and international shorts, from comedies and dramas to action and thrillers, will be screened at the annual event. | The Korean weekend box-office saw peak traffic with BONG Joon-ho's latest thriller "Mother - 2009" facing off against Hollywood's Terminator Salvation. "Mother - 2009" emerged the winner, claiming over 1.4 million admissions in its first four days. BONG's fourth feature was highly anticipated by audiences after the director's previous hits "Memories of Murder" (2003) and "The Host" (2006) won him a broad domestic fan-base. "Mother - 2009" topped the chart, an impressive feat considering competition from Hollywood heavy-hitters, Terminator and Angels & Demons, which took second and third place. BONG's small town thriller dominated theaters nationwide, playing on 765 screens, with Terminator a close second on 716 screens, together accounting for over 70% of the nations screens. Global star director JOHN Woo puts his faith in Korean director KIM Jong-hak to realize the classic epic Chinese tale Magic Bell's cinematic 3D special effects laden adaptation. KIM was praised for his pan-Asian television hit drama "The Legend".
John Woo's business partner Terence Chang said he was impressed by KIM's "The Legend" because of its "high production values and ground-breaking visual style". John Woo and Terence Chang's Lion Rock Productions is producing the Chinese-language big budget fantasy project. Lion Rock partners up with Korea's Kimjonghak Production and Taiwanese Tosowa Entertainment. Casting is on the way, and both Korean stars Won Bin and JUNG Ji-hoon (aka singer "Rain"/Bi) are rumoured to be considered for leading roles. Renee Yuan has been cast. | Bong Joon-ho does not need to compromise. As director of the acclaimed "Memories of Murder" and the record-shattering box office hit "The Host", he has earned the right to do whatever he wants. Yet "Mother - 2009", which he wrote and directed and is now showing in Korean theaters with English subtitles (see box), was reportedly specifically designed around star Kim Hye-ja.
