Furthermore, it was a success in Japan earning $9,7 million, and it was also released in the United Stated, earning $1,1 million. Won Bin and Lee Na-young's 'small wedding' 2015/05/31, Source, Won Bin and Lee Na-young got married. They are a top star couple also known as the Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie of Korea. The two of them got married in a quiet village and had a small wedding without the fuss of having a huge top star wedding. Why though?
There are a few things that can be mentioned when it comes to top star weddings. Media and the spotlight, a luxury hotel wedding hall with celebrity guests who look like they're going to an award show and more fanciness and fuss than a regular wedding are some. The wedding alone is confusion enough but it's true that celebrities have more pressure on their shoulders when their wedding becomes the hottest topic not only in the showbiz but publicly as well,...More

[HanCinema's Lists] The Top 5 Korean Thrillers of All-Time 2014/01/17,
One of the most popular trends we saw in 2013 was the rampant release of action-packed thrillers! It's a genre that Korean cinema favours and continues to return to, but in 2013 the industry really did pump out a number of successful hits that contributed to the record-breaking tickets sales last year enjoyed.
It's tricky to pinpoint films that are 'pure' thrillers because Korean films often blend and bend their genres in unique and creative ways. That being said, here is a quick look at the top 5 Korean thrillers that have stormed their way to box office glory,...More
[HanCinema's Hall of Fame] Bong Joon-ho's "Mother - 2009" 2013/10/26, In the Spotlight this Week:"Mother - 2009" by Bong Joon-ho
The mother-image invokes particularly powerful emotions within us all; they are the protecting and nurturing figures that we imagine to be compassionately eternal and lovingly steadfast. In "Mother - 2009" that ideal is given a cruel existence, a scratched filmind born from the collision of untouchable family values and modern Korea's fumbling with justice and reliability. How would a widowed mother react if her only son (of 28 years) were accused of cold-blooded murder? An interesting enough thought experiment, but all-star director Bong Joon-ho challenges us further by thinking the son as mentally handicapped, another cruel test of faith for his mother-image. 'Unconditional love' seems an appropriate tool from which to start from here, it's the romantic weapon that tells us all that a mother's love is always forthcoming - like the rise and fall of the sun. "Mother - 2009" is the tragic story of that unconditional love gone awry, lost somewhere in the vast and unforgiving social space that Bong places between mother and son, between their love and shared madness,...More

High Tech Rice Cookers from a Nation of Rice Connoisseurs 2012/04/29, Source,
In Korea we have this saying that "Koreans' strength comes out from eating rice". Many Koreans agree with this saying and it plays out in daily life. While the average Korean's diet is becoming more globalized (and perhaps Westernized), most Korean still prefer rice over other carbs like bread.
Because of this, we're somewhat of rice connoisseurs and making rice that's up to our standards isn't easy. I still remember the first time I tried making rice for my family (I was nine and I wanted to be loved). At that time our family didn't have a rice cooker so I had to use a sauce pan and the result was a disaster,...More
Kanryu Currents in Japan, Past and Present 2012/03/11, Source,
Tokyo-based journalist, translator and filmmaker Jason GRAY examines the ebb and flow of the Korean Wave in Japan over the past ten years, pinpointing the highs and lows.
The Korean wave of popular culture in Japan, referred to as "kanryu" or "hanryu" in Japanese, has had an interesting ebb and flow over the past decade. There were earlier booms here including traditional Korean ballads ("enka") in the late 70s, the Seoul Olympics in 1988 and the South Korea-Japan co-hosted World Cup in 2002. Japanese cinema exhibitors saw their first genuine Korean smash with Kang Je-gyu's "Shiri" (2000), which earned JPY1.8 billion (US$22.1 million) - an impressive result to this day. As we'll see, KANG is unique in that he figures into pre, peak and post kanryu cinema,...More

By Lee Hyo-won The past year has seen Korean cinema on an upward climb from the recession that hit the industry hard in the mid-2000s, particularly as homespun works made successful debuts in the Chinese box office and more experimental mid-budget films drew crowds domestically. In the early 2000s, few Korean movies enjoyed wide releases in large neighboring Asian markets such as Japan. In September, however, "The Man From Nowhere", a 2010 crime drama, made successful box office debuts not only in Japan but also in China, one of the world's fastest growing markets,...More

The 3 Means of Success For Hot Stars 2011/10/01, Source,
There was an article a few days ago in the korean Osen portal, on Gang Dong-won, Won Bin and Gong Yoo and 3 common elements between them which contributed to their success. Being someone who has quite positive feelings for all three of these beloved actors, I decided to write an article inspired by the one found in Osen.
Well-timed transition from television to movies
So the one obvious common strategy between these three is that they started with television. Dramas are a good way to gain popularity, raise the level of offers you get and generally get noticed. All three gentlemen started with them and gained recognition and mainly fame through them. But television is a good way to pigeonhole ones self,...More

Here's a brief synopsis: Nam-Yi uses an arrow that is only 1/3 of the traditional arrow size and weight, making it superior in velocity, force, and range. His arrows make it hard to detect the shooter's location, thus ideal for an ambush. On the other hand, Jyu Shin-Ta uses an arrow that is 24 times heavier than the traditional arrow, tearing apart targets with just one shot. Different features and actions that are performed by each bow will keep you on the edge of your seat with action that has never before been experienced in Korean film history,...More

Second visit to Busan and first time covering the Pusan International Film Festival (PIFF). It is experience that is embarrassing to even be considered short. But instead feeling discouraged by the Busan natives and reporters who cover PIFF every year, the fireworks which went off at the start of the festival were watched with ease and excitement. Avex Asia Managing Director Buddy Marini [Avex Asia]
Q: In what ways do you think the NAFF could do better? A: I would like to see more Korean company participation. I think there's a lot of creative people there such as Korean directors and producers with projects, but I'd like to see more industry people there. And I think programming-wise it's always been very interesting and keeps getting more interesting so it's good but I'm feeling that maybe this year, perhaps it's because of the industry situation as a whole, I didn't feel it was as dynamic as last year. The first time I came I had fun meeting all these independent directors and producers that I usually don't meet. And last year I thought it was getting bigger in scope. But this year, I felt it wasn't as good as last year because the Korean companies weren't here. Last year, industry people from Seoul made appearances here but many didn't this year. I think the fest needs to, or at least NAFF, they need to incorporate this aspect more,...More

[INTERVIEW] Actor Won Bin - Part 1 2010/08/04, Source, Won Bin [Lee Jin-hyuk/10Asia]
10: I heard that when you debuted, you had wanted to become an actor after watching Choi Min-soo starrer "Terrorist". "The Man From Nowhere" also revolves around the action sequences of one man. How did it feel?Won Bin: For me, "Terrorist" was the greatest movie at the time. I dreamt of becoming an actor after watching that film. The time I spent working on "The Man From Nowhere" was a lot of fun for me. It was a new genre for me and I liked it even more because my character communicated with a child. 10: You must've been excited. (laugh)Won Bin: It was fun. Many people worried that I might get hurts since there was so much action in it but I like moving around and sweating. I felt like I was playing a game doing the action scenes. I hadn't done this sort of action movie before so it was tough physically but it was new so it felt like I was learning something,...More

10: How did you feel about there being almost no change to his expression? And him saying very few lines. He shows most of his emotions through his eyes.Won Bin: I think it's inevitable that he has become quiet because he hasn't gone outsid efor three years. He hadn't spoken to anyone and must've held great grief in his heart. I thought that it was only natural that there would be little change to his expression because of the character he is. 10: Wasn't it difficult trying to express your emotions through the slightest expression or look?Won Bin: It was but it was rather more appealing. I think that the sadness he feels in his heart was delievered more effectively because he pushed down useless talk rather than expressing himself overly or shouting out loudly,...More

10: Then you must be more cautious about choosing new roles. What about a new movie do you regard as most important?Won Bin: First, that the scenario is strong and what story it tells within it. And it was never on purpose but I think the roles I've played till now have been humane. They have always had an affinity. I think "The Man From Nowhere" too contains a form of love between a man and a child but I wonder whether I would've taken on the movie if there wasn't such form of communication,...More

The movie "The Man From Nowhere", which will be released on August 4, is a very violent movie with realistic action scenes. The fight scene in which Tae Sik, who is the former member of a special forces unit, devastates a criminal organization that kidnapped a neighbor girl contains violent scenes such as splattered blood and broken bones, but the scene is also filled with resolute and well-made action sequences.

He had previously filmed battle scenes in the movie "Taegukgi" and he had carried a gun when he filmed the movie "Guns and talks", but he mentioned that this is the first time for him to film a legitimate action movie,...More
Hallyu Stars Accused of Ignoring Korean Fans 2010/07/23, Source,
It has continuously been pointed out that Hallyu stars who are actively performing overseas rarely arrange performances and events for Korean fans.
Hallyu stars reportedly consistently neglect Korean fans and usually do not have much contact with fans in Korea; on the other hand, they have adopted friendly images to the public overseas by holding large-scale fan meetings and releasing photo and music albums.
Hallyu star kwon Sang-woo, who evoked criticism with a hit-and-run last month, has raised controversy because he delivered a message of apology on his official Japanese fan website before his Korean website. After the news on his hit-and-run was spread, he just made a brief apology in Korea on the following day, which was June 25, simply by using the press release that his agency had distributed, but he still had not personally expressed an apology officially in Korea for three weeks after the accident. On the contrary, his agency had urgently left apology messages on the board of his official website in Japan on the very next day, which was on June 25,...More

hey hotty! you know when ever i watch Autumn in my heart, I get so mad because your always get hurt! i wanted you to be the star that get that girl...whenever i see that movie i always wonder why are you so hot? well no matter what you are always the hottest guy to me!
I watched "autumn in my heart" just this year.. and I cried when tae-suk's heart was broken. I saw how he changed for the better and your acting was so compelling, i wish i could have eased tae-suk's pain. It was moving, thank you for that. I hoped that you would get the girl, even if it was against fate, because the pain in your face looked so real. And then i found the "My Brother" movie.. at the end when you looked up to the sky and talked to your brother, that made me cry too. I just wanted to say job well done. I hope everything is going well with you.. Stay up and alive and strong. Serving in the army must have been hard. It's okay to rest now. Take care. I hope your life is surrounded with love. I know I'm just a stranger to you. I don't even know if you read these posts. Maybe someday I'll see you in real life.. but then again maybe not. I can only hope you get a chance to read these words.. That will be enough for me.
