[Guest Film Review] "Fighter in the Wind" 2016/11/05,
The film is based on the actual life of Korean Kyokushin Karate founder Choi Bae-dal, who immigrated to Japan after World War II to become a pilot. Instead, he ended up changing his name to Masutatsu Oyama, and became an unbeatable fighter.
The script tracks his first steps in Japan, where he ends up in a military training camp, along with Choon-bae, a friend who initially tried to con him. While there, they are treated harshly by the Japanese commander Kato, in a series of events that end up with Bae-dal fighting him one on one,...More
[HanCinema's Film Review] "Days of Wrath" 2014/11/29,
Bullying is a social problem found a lot in Korean works. It is a dire topic in society in general, but especially in countries where pressure for progress and excellence over peers is high. Despite the potential to explore it, "Days of Wrath" is more of a suspense-fueled revenge story than a work about bullying,...More
[HanCinema's Film Review] "Address Unknown" 2014/08/22,
The year is 1970, the location a small Korean town on the southern side of the demilitarized zone. A bunch of bleak looking fields abound in the area, and they look equally dreary in all seasons. The main sources of economic activity are the American military base and the dog meat butchery. Adults ruminate about how wonderful it was back when the war was going on, and their lives had some sort of actual purpose. American soldiers constantly practice their army crawls in anticipation of a northern invasion. The last bit comes off as particularly absurd. Why would the North Koreans want to invade a miserable place like this? And why would the Americans care if they did?,...More
[HanCinema's Film Review] "Black Gospel" 2013/11/09,
I really appreciated the way that this film accurately captures New York City. People often have the misperception of it being this very lively, bustling, clean place filled with white people- well, that's just the image American media likes to sell, sorry about that. But the crew behind this documentary, a group of people whose only purpose is to make a movie explaining what Black Gospel is, have no such national or international agenda. They're all about the music.
Black Gospel is probably the single most influential form of music in the world,...More

Kim Tae-hee movie picks 2010/11/02, Source,
Actress Kim Tae-hee [10Asia]
Actress Kim Tae-hee was told that she was a bore in one talk show. The person who said that was actor Yang Dong-geun who played the male lead opposite her in film "Grand Prix". He was telling the truth. Kim is far from other celebrities who are funny and skilled with their words, the latest trend in entertainment. God may have bestowed Kim with beauty -- the most important quality to be on screen, after all -- but not a brilliant talent and sense of the stage to go with it. Although her looks and intelligence continued to attract people's attention there was always something about her performance that left the audience somewhat unsatisfied. Well, Kim is not like those talkative travelers who can go on and on about interesting twists, the unexpected u-turns or the nostalgia she has felt during her life because she is closer to a pilgrim, simply treading her way forward step by step, never digressing,...More

Actress Kim Tae-hee, who played the female jockey Seo Joo Hee in the movie "Grand Prix", has been very busy lately.
Right after filming the drama "IRIS", she had begun filming "Grand Prix" and she will also begin filming the drama "My Princess", in which she will appear with actor Song Seung-heon. In this way, she has actively performed without taking a rest so far.
In the past, she seldom appeared in many works at once. She explained, "I usually decided on works to appear in after careful consideration before". Even though ten years have passed since her debut, she has appeared in less than ten different works,...More
[INTERVIEW] Kim Tae-hee - Part 1 2010/09/13, Source, Kim Tae-hee [Beck Una/10Asia]
Do you know Kim Tae-hee? Well, of course you know her. It is the name of she who has been endowed with beauty as well as intelligence, attending Korea's top school Seoul National University. To some she has been the object of admiration while to others, the goddess who must be worshipped unconditionally. And at the same time, she is also the one who has been publicly bestowed the harsh and pitiless judgement that she is pretty but without appeal or smart but bad at acting. But alas. The nearly hour-long conversation with the actress in person revealed that she is not the Miss Perfect from another town but closer to being the frank and honest girl from next door. She was not needlessly modest, did not set forth any ungrounded pride, talked in a straightforward manner with a simple personality which knew what to acknowledge and what to admit to, proving she was not a unicorn which exists only in imaginations and myths, but rather a healthy stallion which had just started to gearing up her horsepower. This is just the first record of the first step we have taken in getting to know about this lady whom we had said we know so well but did not actually know much about,...More
[INTERVIEW] Kim Tae-hee - Part 2 2010/09/13, Source, Kim Tae-hee [Beck Una/10Asia]
Beck Una: In "Grand Prix", the woman who always seeks victory first goes through the hardship of losing the horse she loves in order to discover the joy of spending time with her horse. Ultimately, nothing that is precious comes free. What have you probably lost from the point you started acting to now where you have just started to feel the joy in acting?Kim Tae-hee: What you've lost is probably ultimately what you've gained. I wouldn't know as much as I do now or be as strong if I had been hurt less and led an easy life. What I have lost is... privacy? (laugh) Beck: Well it's true that as much as your life has become abundant, it has become tiresome as well.Kim Tae-hee: I'm not the type that regrets easily. I think I'd take this road again, even if I could go back into my past. Should I call it fate? Always. I like how I've gotten where I am right now. I really don't have moments where I regret wishing I had done something in the past or reminisce that a certain point in my past was great. I'm the type that forgets everything and my memory isn't that great either,...More
Kim Tae-hee: 'Since the hit IRIS, I Feel Greedy about Success' 2010/08/22, Source,
"I did not care much about the number of viewers and the viewer ratings before, but as the drama "IRIS" gained huge success, I began to feel greedy about being successful". -Kim Tae-hee
At the production presentation of the movie "Grand Prix" (to be released on September 16) held at Megabox in Dongdaemun on August 19, the female protagonist Kim Tae-hee revealed both the pressure about the movie's success and her desire to be successful. Press conference for military musical "Voyage of Life" [tentative title] With the increasing number of celebrity officers serving in the military compared to previous years, the quantity and quality of military-produced contents have been changing. Musical productions in particular have become one of the most representative military contents ever since Kang Ta and Yang Dong-geun performed in musical "Mine" in 2008. And two years later, the Korean military is producing musical "Voyage of Life" [tentative title] with Lee Joon-ki and Joo Ji-hoon playing the lead roles. If 2008's production 'Mine" was a story about a father and a son, "Voyage of Life" -- produced in celebration of the 60th anniversary of the Korean War -- focuses on the "communication between the war generation and the post-war generation",...More

Choi Daniel's Song Picks 2010/02/18, Source,
Actor Choi Daniel [Chae Ki-won/10Asia]
He was a teenager without a dream. He was not interested in studying and was tall yet clumsy. He then came across a flyer calling for auditions at a playhouse. He applied without giving a second thought and just like that, he made it. Becoming an actor was a coincidence for Choi Daniel -- like picking up a lucky penny on the side of a street or a falling leaf landing on your head. Choi appeared in KBS2's "Worlds Within" and also starred in several commercials but rather than looking for things to put onto his resume, defining himself as an actor was always more important to him.
"I increasingly started to realize that this is not an easy job while it's also the only thing I know how to do. At least with what I've been given". Of course, no matter how strong the desire, all hope will be lost if an actor is not given any work. Nevertheless, this young actor was able to make a successful debut in "World" by portraying the character of Yang Soo-kyung, who is a nuisance that cannot control his emotions. And now, he is gaining popularity with an entirely different role -- as the cold-hearted Lee Ji-hoon in MBC's sitcom "High Kick Through The Roof". That is why, despite his young career, it is not awkward associating this man as an actor. Even more so because he thinks analyzing his character Ji-hoon's emotions for Se-gyeong and Jung-eum is more important than simply gaining popularity for his role.,...More

[INTERVIEW] Actress Lee Na-young (Part 1) 2010/01/14, Source,
Actress Lee Na-young [Lee Jin-hyuk/10Asia]
Most actresses which men rave about, are less liked by women. But a handsome number of female fans became enchanted with Lee Na-young's roles in TV series such as "Ruler of Your Own World" and "Ireland". And words such as 'consistency', 'sturdiness' and 'prudence' -- normally used to describe someone of the male gender -- also befit this 31-year-old actress well. She was the same on the set of film "Lady Daddy". The Lee Na-young that 10Asia met with sighed as she jokingly complained how the female members of the crew would ask for photographs with her when she dressed up as a man in particular, much more so than when she was herself. But it seemed unlike that her image as an actress will be affected after she dons a mustache and short hair to play her character Ji-hyun. Below is 10Asia's interview with the actress who seeks after what she wants, even if it may be the long way around. 10: I hear that you choose your roles quite carefully so "Lady Daddy" was an surprising choice in many ways.Lee Na-young (Lee): I made my mind up very quickly for film "Dream" and sitcom "High Kick Through The Roof" but took more time with "Lady Daddy" because many people around me were concerned about it. Before, I had never thought about 'image' in choosing a role but it seemed I should with this film since the topic may influence my image as an actress in Korea. That's why some people were telling me, "As an actress..". but in the end, I decided to think about my character and genre more than my image. 10: So what was the key factor that led you to take on "Lady Daddy"? Lee: I liked the combination of comedy with the possibly risky topic we are usually careful to talk about. Sex change in particular is something Koreans are not used to and have little information or knowledge about. So I was extremely attracted to the collaboration of the topic and genre, and another thing was that I wanted to play the role of a man. I was very shocked upon seeing Kate Blanchett's acting in the film "I'm Not There". I had never thought I'd be able to play the role of a guy but also started wondering whether such an opportunity would arise in our country too. That's why, when I got the scenario for this film, I was worried about it. But I also told myself that it was unlikely I'd be given the chance to play this sort of a role again. That's why for me, what was important was 'being a guy' and not dressing up as one, whether it be as the person from his past or as a dad.,...More
