In battle for the weekend box office, 'Apes' rules

About half of moviegoers over the weekend chose to watch "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes". The movie accounted for 49.4 percent of Korean ticket sales from Friday through Sunday in the second weekend since its release, according to the Korea Film Council.

The movie maintained its dominance in the United States as well. The science fiction sequel from 20th Century Fox outmuscled a trio of new films to top the North American box office for the second straight week with $36 million, according to studio estimates Sunday...More

Koreans continue to go ape for Reeves' revolutionary rendition...

Matt Reeves' apes enjoyed a second term at the top as it continued its dominance as Korea's film of choice. Last weekend "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes", the sequel to the 2011 film "Rise of the Planet of the Apes", entered the Korean market and captured 47% of box office pie to take gold. Week two for the blockbuster was just as successful as it added another 1M stubs (48.5%) to bring its total tally now to 3.1M ($24.3M). The only local representatives in this weekend's top ten came in the form of "The Divine Move", "Confession", as well as Kim Seong-hoon's action drama "A Hard Day"...More

Prime gives way to primates as a new king is crowned...

"Dawn of the Planet of the Apes", the sequel to the 2011 film "Rise of the Planet of the Apes", recently hit Korean shores and dislodged Bay's "Transformers" at the top of the pile. Matt Reeves' film captured more than 47% of the box office pie (1.3M admissions) over 919 screens to break the hat-trick "Transformers" was eyeing. Still, Bay's bombastic blockbuster held firm in third, while Jo Beom-goo's drama "The Divine Move" stayed umoved in second place with 925K (23%)...More

"Dawn of the Planet of the Apes", the sequel about highly intelligent apes that battle with humans for dominance, knocked the giant "Transformers" out of the top spot at both the Korean and North American box offices over the second weekend of July. In North America, the 3-D "Apes" collected $73 million in ticket sales from Friday through Sunday, according to estimates from Rentrak.

In Korea, "Apes" also had a strong debut in the top spot, with 1.3 million moviegoers adding $10.5 million to its global sales...More
