"Tazza 2" keeps its roll going…

"Tazza: The High Rollers 2" had a fantastic week and managed to extend its lead at the top of pile. Kang Hyeong-cheol's comedy drama attracted over 540K filmgoers (26.7%) over the weekend to move its total tally now to 3.1M ($24.6M), which makes it the ninth highest-grossing Korean film of 2014 having just overtaken Director Chang's "The Target". Kang's closest competition came in the form of the American musical drama "Begin Again" and its 351K (17.1%), but otherwise the top ten remained largely unchanged except for Frank Miller's neo-noir "Sin City: A Dame to Kill For" creeping in at ten...More

Fresh Faces move in as "Pirates" and "The Admiral" take a bow…

Kang Hyeong-cheol's comedy drama "Tazza: The High Rollers 2" slotted straight into first over this past weekend by dislodging "Pirates" at the top of the box office pile. The film is the second feature based on Huh Young-man's manhwa of the same name, and after eight years fans can finally enjoy this second, star-studded, instalment.

"Tazza 2" claimed over 836K admissions (28.3%) over 890 screens to take gold with the help of actors Choi Seung-hyeon, Sin Se-kyeong, Kwak Do-won, Lee Honey, and Yoo Hae-jin. Last weekend's number one, Lee Seok-hoon's period romp "Pirates", seems to have finally reached it peak as it slipped to fourth with just 275K (8.7%)...More

Box office picks for Chuseok

Source | 2014/09/04 | | Permalink

Screen shots of films screened at local theaters during the Chuseok holiday season. From top left: "My Brilliant Life", "Tazza: The High Rollers 2", "The King of Jokgu" and "Hill of Freedom". From bottom left: "Lucy", "Step Up: All In", "Doraemon the Movie: Nobita in the New Haunts of Evil - Peko and the Five Explorers" and "Maya the Bee Movie".

After the period action film "The Admiral: Roaring Currents" broke box office records nationwide, this Chuseok will be quieter than usual in terms of heavyweight releases - especially compared to 2012 and 2013.

For the past two years, big-budget costume films such as "The Face Reader" (2013) and "Masquerade" (2012) hit cinemas around Chuseok, the Korean equivalent of Thanksgiving...More
