In 1988 the Korean film industry was on the verge of failing. In accordance with trade liberalization, United International Pictures (UIP) announced the direct distribution of films in Korea. Due to the direct distribution, Hollywood films in Korea have increased twice as much as the previous year (around 175 films).

The fast changing media contents market is destroying longstanding barriers between filmmakers, broadcasters, talent management firms and mobile carriers.
Film companies are beginning to make television dramas, while broadcasters are producing films. Talent management companies, riding on their rising "star power", are jumping into production projects. Meanwhile, mobile communication carriers are buying up companies that traditionally provided only content.
"Television, theater, game, mobile phone and other media are converging in the name of digital technology", said Kan Han-seop, a professor at Seoul Institute of the Arts. "The entertainment market is now undergoing fundamental changes".
According to industry insiders, burgeoning new media, like digital multimedia broadcasting (DMB) and satellite channels, require large, high-quality content and are therefore transforming the traditional contents market. In addition, the rising popularity of Korean pop culture in East Asia is raising demand for content.
In the eyes of traditional content makers or their neighbors, the ongoing upheaval is seen as either a "crisis or an opportunity". They are now emerging from their long-standing home turfs and making forays into neighboring territories.

It's not just its English title that is provocative (Im hasn't explained why he came up with the name) but also the way it was presented to the press as well as a legal wrangling with Park's son.
With a horde of bodyguards protecting the Yongsan CGV cinema, the film's premier last week revealed some controversial footage, portraying Park as a leader who often speaks in fluent Japanese with his lieutenants in the Blue House and engages in not-so-graceful drinking parties.
Conservative politicians and a group of people who still remember Park as a "respectable leader" that pulled the nation out of poverty with his aggressive economic development drive during the 1960-70s, are sharply criticizing the movie and its producers.
Baik Yoon-sik plays the KCIA director who assassinated President Park Chung-hee.
The movie starts with a scene suggesting the sexual adventure Park allegedly enjoyed during his final years as the iron-fist ruler. Referring to the secret sex party for Park, a middle-aged woman says, "He is really incredible. Members of the film industry reacted strongly to the Seoul court's decision that a controversial film about the assassination of former President Park Chung-hee must be edited before its release.
"The ruling is a pure anachronism," members of Women in Film Korea said Tuesday in their official statement on the court's decision. "It is the same method of censorship used to control culture by the past dictatorial government."
