Wonder Girls is back in Korea with its long anticipated official 2nd album "Wonder World".

Lot and lot of new groups are being called "new Hallyu" or "the future of Hallyu", but only time will tell which ones can actually make it. I was hesitant to write about any of them, not too sure if I write about a craze that will not live long. But the group I am going to introduce today has few distinctive traits that set them apart from others. This may become their undoing, but at the same time this may be their strongest asset.
The group consists of 7 members: Kim Seonggyu, Jang Dongwu, Nam Wuhyeon, Lee Howon (Hoya), Lee Seongyeol, Kim Myeongsu (L), and Lee Seongjong. They are managed by Woollim Entertainment, the same label of Epic High and Nell. Yes, I guess, that would be the first trait that sets them apart. Neither of those groups is typical Kpop, although Epic High is highly (nomen-omen) popular...More

Apollo 18 being interviewed during SXSW
As I mentioned a few months ago, 2011 is shaping up to be a pretty good year for Korean indie music. Although not as famous as K-pop, and not receiving the institutional support that traditional music does, Korean rock music is one of the most dynamic and interesting parts of Korean culture (in my humble opinion). And at last, some of the best bands from Korea are getting recognition from abroad...More
2NE1 album cover for their first officially released album "To Anyone".
Among hundreds of celebrities, only a select few become mega-stars, and they require more than just beautiful faces and nice bodies. When 2NE1 debuted in September 2009, they quickly rose to stardom, breaking new ground for girl group singers in the Kpop industry by shattering the stereotypes previously set for a "Korean girl group" – pretty, but rather bland, lacking in personality.
2NE1 first became known to the public through the song, "Lollipop", digitally released in early 2009, as a promotion song for an LG Cyon mobile phone commercial. It was a joint release with Big Bang, the hottest all-boy "idol" group in Korea, as well as sharing the same label, YG Entertainment. "Lollipop" immediately hit No. 1 on various online charts as well as on several music television shows for over three consecutive weeks...More

Idol groups are fighting fierce battles from the start of the new year by releasing new albums. Many idol groups including star idol groups such as TVXQ, Seung Ri from Big Bang, and JYJ, and newcomer groups such as MBLAQ, Secret, Dalmatian, Infinite, and Dalshabet will release new albums. Usually, singers do not release new albums in January and February after finishing their activities at the end of the last year, but this year will be different because star singers and new singers are all beginning to have showdowns from the beginning of the year. The team leader of the Music Business Department at Mnet Media said on January 2, "Singers tended to release new albums in September or October in the past, but recently they are actively performing all year round by releasing single albums and mini albums. Idol groups regardless of their popularity all think that they will be forgotten if they do not have activities, so they release new songs one after another without taking a long break"...More
KBS series "Dream High" [KBS]
KBS2 Monday & Tuesday 9:55 p.m.
KBS drama "Dream High" takes off at seven years from now, with singer "K", a graduate of Kirin Art School, appearing at the Grammy Awards ceremony. Chung Ha-myung (Bae Yong-joon), the director of Kirin High, reminisces on how all he did was strike a "break shot" (the first shot in billiards that scatters the balls). The problem with the first episode of "Dream High" was in those balls. The way Ko Hye-mi (played by Suzy), the so-called genius in vocal music, jeers at popular culture went beyond arrogance to make it seem forced and the scene where Jin-guk (Taecyeon) easily fights off the men who are after Hye-mi, several loan sharks including their boss (Ahn Kil-gang) who are after her father, or the overuse of slow motion was cliche enough to be seen in a scene of an online comic book...More
G-Dragon and T.O.P (Choi Seung-hyeon) [Lee Jin-hyuk, Chae Ki-won/10Asia]
Not everybody can express their thoughts through music. And not everybody can organize and speak of the result of the thoughts they have gained from making music. But G-Dragon and T.O.P (Choi Seung-hyeon) are musicians who can do both. They spoke only of their music throughout our interview with them and talked about the thoughts they injected into their music. Whether you agree with their music or not, we recommend you read this interview to hear what the two have to say about their music. This is what it means for these two young men in their early 20s, regarded as idols stars, to make their own music and present it to people.

1 Gwanghwamun restored
Gwanghwamun, the main entrance to Gyeongbok Palace and one of Korea's representative symbols, was unveiled on Aug. 15 after more than three years of renovations.
The unveiling came in time for the G20 Seoul Summit inNovember, as well as the 65th anniversary of the country's liberation from colonial Japan in 1945; it thus holds great symbolic importance: built in 1395, the gate was destroyed during a 16th-century Japanese invasion.
Though later reconstructed, its location was shifted during Japanese colonial rule.
Criticism arose over the craftsmanship of the iconic edifice's nameplate as cracks began to form on the surface, and the national heritage administration decided Tuesday to replace it.
2 Cultural relics reclaimed
French President Nicolas Sarkozy agreed in November to return ancient royal Korean documents that French troops looted during a 19th-century attack, though on a permanent lease contract that is to be renewed every five years.
The agreement settles an issue that had been pending for 19 years. The books are currently stored at the National Library of France in Paris.
Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan also agreed to return a collection of 1,205 royal books known as "Uigwe" that were stolen during Japan's 1910-45 colonial rule.
Meanwhile, UNESCO recognized three Korean cultural traditions - "gagok" (lyrical songs), "maesanyang" (falcon hunting), and "daemokjang" (artistry of wooden architecture) - as intangible world treasures in November.
3 Celebrities pass
In 2010, Korea lost spiritual props in Buddhism, fashion and entertainment.
Ven. Beop Jeong, one of the most highly revered Buddhist monks in the country, passed away in March. He is noted for his books and essays, sharing lessons he learned from Buddhism.
"Poverty that is made by choice is not poverty at all", he wrote in "Musoyu", one of his most popular books. After his death, his books all sold out at local bookstores.
In August, Korea's top fashion designer Andre Kim departed this life.
The pioneer designer was considered an ambassador of Korean fashion to the world. He held numerous fashion shows known for their distinct venues, such as amid the Egyptian Pyramids, and for featuring top actors and actresses such as Kim Hee-seon
Hallyu, or Korean wave, star Park Yong-ha
took his own life in June, with fans in Korean and Japan grieving the loss.

Artists from SM Entertainment were nowhere to be seen at the 2010 Mnet Asian Music Awards (MAMA). The same thing could be said of YG Entertainment at this year's Golden Disc Awards Ceremony that came after. But at the MelOn Music Awards held at the Peace Hall of Kyung Hee University on December 15, all three major agencies -- SM, YG and JYP Entertainment (JYPE) -- gathered together, proving the influence the nation's largest online music contents site has over even the 3 largest houses in the music industry.

Popular programs such as "Superstar K - Season 2","High Kick Through The Roof", and "Bread, Love and Dreams" had entered the cradle of buzzwords, and those buzzwords had been talked about for a year by people, in pleasant times as well as times of suffering. But some buzzwords had aroused criticism and could not be kept as buzzwords. The premiere episode of public network MBC's singing competition series "MBC Star Audition" which went on air live November 5 was sort of the launching episode to the show introducing its hosts and judges. Sensation over six of singer Lee Hyori
's songs, apparently plagiarized by Bahnus, is about to snowball as more singers and industry insiders claim to have been duped by the composer.
Bahnus, the leader of the seven-member composers' group Bahnus Vacuum, faces a string of lawsuits that extend to his management and team members. The looming legal battles are expected to be the largest in K-pop history.
On Wednesday, Chang, the management director of Bahnus Vacuum, said he had found a "statement of regret" written by Bahnus, whose real name is Lee Jae-young, on Lee's computer hard disc. The letter was, surprisingly, not for Lee Hyori
but for a relatively unknown singer Lee Hyun
, written two years ago.
, who sang "Jajonshim" (pride) written by Bahnus in 2008, received complaints from another composer Kim just a few days after the song was released. Kim claimed the rhythm, melody and lyrics were identical to his creation.
When Lee Hyun
asked Bahnus for an explanation, he promised to drop his name from the credits and pay a refund for the song.
Chang said Bahnus, who introduced himself as "a Yonsei University graduate who had sold numerous songs to foreign artists during his stay in the U.K", lied about other things too.
"He was not a Yonsei University graduate and the contracts he had suggested for potential song sales were also fabricated", he told a local daily.

The producers say Lee was not directly responsible for the plagiarism, but the public sees things differently. They feel it is unseemly for Lee to make out that she is a victim herself, and that the producers of TV shows should not sweep the problem under the carpet.
Unlike other artists accused of plagiarism, who deny their wrongdoings to the end, Lee owned up. But the fact that half of an artist's album consisted of songs that had been stolen from foreign artists le...More

But, after thorough investigation, it was found that the songs had not been composed by them". Seven songs in Lee Hyori
's fourth album have continuously brought controversy about plagiarism on the Internet, but her agency Mnet Media had officially announced that the demo songs were accidentally leaked as Bahnus strongly insisted.

The singer has had her fair share of fame over the past 12 years, starting as the leader of the now disbanded girl group Fin.K.L, then as a solo singer and until recently the host of the popular television show "The Family is Out!" News 1. Actress Jang Ja-yeon commits suicide
Actress Jang Ja-yeon [KBS]
On March 7, one little known actress wrote in her suicide note, "I am a weak, powerless actress. I want to be free from this pain" and killed herself. It was actress Jang Ja-yeon, who was appearing in KBS TV series "Boys over Flowers" at the time. The suicide note, which was 12 pages long on A4-sized paper, explained that she had been physically abused by her agency, forced to drink and provide sexual services. It also listed names of high-ranking executives in the industry, including a head of media company, television drama director and owners of business companies. People started calling the note "The Jang Ja-yeon List". The incident brought to surface how badly aspiring actresses and female celebrities in general have been violated and the ugly power of the media. But due to slow, passive investigation by the Korean authorities, the truth never came to light. Of all people who were under investigation, only two people involved in the incident -- former head of Jang's agency and former manager who exposed Jang's suicide notes -- were indicted and the suspects whose names were listed in the documents were all cleared of charges and let go. Was the death of Jang Ja-yeon a suicide or a homicide?...More

The Mnet Asian Music Awards (MAMA) came to an end Saturday, but unfortunately, there were some shortcomings despite it being called Asia's best music award event.
The much-anticipated event was held at Jamsil Indoor Stadium, with young fans lined up near the entrances in hopes of catching a glimpse of some of their favorite K-pop singers.
Mnet Media scrapped its 10-year Mnet KM Music Festival (MKMF) in October, announcing that it was bringing an upgraded music event for not only fans in Korea, but throughout Asia as well. While the overall show was entertaining, it failed to truly captivate fans with its results and concept.

Mnet Media, one of Korea's most popular music networks, will scrap its 10-year-old music festival for a new one titled "2009 Mnet Asian Music Awards" (MAMA).
The former event "Mnet KM Music Festival" (MKMF) was organized by two music cable channels, Mnet and KM. It was considered one of the biggest music award events in Korea. However, Mnet surprised fans when they posted a large sign on its Web site early this month saying that they were not holding the MKMF this year.
Curiosity emerged, and the network finally announced that they were creating a new event that would attract not only Korea's most popular singers, but also those from around the world.
"Our final goal is to not only show the best of Korean music to the world, but also become Asia's representative award event and attract other famous artists to come as well", Mnet Media said.
The network is preparing subtle yet unique changes, from the style of the event to the judging system.
The biggest change will be the overall concept.

The Wonder Girls, of JYP Entertainment, on the other hand, are busy in the United States as the opening act of the Jonas Brothers' U.S. tour. Cable music channel Mnet leads these programs, with a total of three programs open for viewers to join in and become a part of them. One of the most anticipated is "Superstar K", which is the Korean version of the United States' hit program "American Idol". With a winning prize of more than 100 million won and the chance to make a debut this coming fall backed by music mogul Mnet, more than 5,000 viewers applied on the first day of admissions.
"There were plenty of similar music programs that held auditions for aspiring singers but the problem with most of them was the lack of support and interest given to the winners after the program. Another important feature we focused on is that literally anyone can participate and try out to become the next top singer of Korea", the makers of "Superstar K" said through a statement.
The program toured around the nation in search of talented contestants for the past two months and brought out interesting participants from different regions of the country.
Kim Byung-soo, 69, is one of the many interesting contestants; just the type the program makers were searching for.

Well-made existing programs are refined through formatting, aiming at foreign market
To promote format export, which recently emerges as a new business model for content exports, the Korea Creative Content Agency (KOCCA, President & CEO: Lee Jae-woong) announced that they have selected 14 best programs such as KBS's 'Happy Together-Friends' and 'Couple Clinic: Love and War', and 'Interview Game' of Every Show Co., Ltd. to provide financial assistance worth a total of 358 million won for their format bible production.
Among those selected are 11(79% of the total) programs of edutainment genre which has been less exported. What is unique about the production support is that programs which are no longer on air or some corners of a program have been chosen. The examples include 'Guerilla Concert' of MBC's Sunday Sunday Night and 'Happy Together-Friends'. Formatting allows a program which is no longer on air to produce new added value and entertainment programs to be exported to ar...More

Younghoon David Kim, chairman of energy, environment and culture-based business Daesung Group, had a nice surprise in China two years ago when he was on a business trip.
An executive from China Film Group Corporation, the largest and most influential state-run film enterprise in China, expressed deep enthusiasm about forging a partnership with Kim's business which invested part of its capital in producing cultural products.
"I was told that Korean soap operas were very popular there. Due to the guidelines set by the government, Chinese people were allowed to watch made-in-Korea dramas only after 10 p.m. Despite the inconvenience, families gathered together in front of television late at night to watch Korean dramas", said the businessman.
Before the business trip, Kim confessed he thought the Chinese madness to hallyu was waning.
"To link the enthusiasm to business opportunities, I think we need to stop using the term hallyu that embraces some defensive meaning on made-in-Korea cultural products in China", he said.
Chinese media coined the term of hallyu ― meaning th...More

Trying to stop illegal music downloading on the Internet may seem like an impossible task, as young and old Internet users alike freely download copyrighted songs without awareness of the criminal implications.
In the past, music companies would chase after people who illegally downloaded music, but this proved to be largely ineffective in deterring other downloaders.
Now, the music industry has changed tactics. According to Lee Deok-yo, the CEO of the Korean Association of Phonogram Producers (KAPP), the industry is fighting against rampant music piracy through an information campaign featuring pop stars like Wonder Girls and FT Island
, and improving technical protection for digital audio files.
"We have sued people who have downloaded contents illegally, but we soon realized our actions would not help in rooting out the already widely-known and practice. The downloaders were young, high school and even middle school students, and it was quite a shock for them to be sued by an organi...More

The global economic crisis and corresponding local business sentiments are spreading over to the entertainment sector. Planned dramas are being dropped from production while top celebrities are willingly reducing their paychecks.
Main broadcasters MBC, KBS and SBS have each cut one drama from their programming budgets this fall, as production costs, along with actors' paychecks, are still soaring higher than ever.
At a seminar dubbed "The Crisis of TV dramas and Normalization of Performance Fees", drama directors from television networks, producers from outsource production companies, actors, scholars and civil group members got together to further discuss the reality and come up with constructive solutions.
"Production costs have jumped 25 percent to even 120 percent since 2004. The surprising part of the jump is that almost 60 percent of it is due to the paychecks (of the actors)", said Ha Yun-geum from the Korean Broadcasting Institute.
The paychecks given to top actors ranged from one million won to nine million won in 2002, but the number has jumped to 10 million and higher. Now it takes about 25 million won per episode to bring a top celebrity to star in a...More
