This week I share news about the expanding cast of "The Legend of the Blue Sea" and lament its lack of mermen. "Incarnation of Jealousy" piles on the love triangles and said jealousy, which will surely create one big and hopefully entertaining romantic mayhem. Let us take a look at Dramaland's past week...More

Korean films are particularly intrigued by the tragic tests time and memory can place on love. This fascination extends across genres and the results are often not the Hollywood fairy tale viewers might come to expect. We see this in recent films like "The Servant", where Choon-hyang (Korea's 'Juliet' played by Jo Yeo-jung) suffers a devasting physical trauma that leaves her mentally and emotionally incapacitated, no longer able to remember the love and passion she once had for her forbidden lover Bang-ja (Kim Joo-hyeok). In Park Chan-wook's cult classic "Old Boy" Oh Dae-su (Choi Min-sik) is confronted with an impossible decision at the end, one that cruelly pits the love for his daughter against his own sanity. (I think it will be highly interesting to see how Spike Lee's version of the story's ending differs to Park's). There are other examples of how time and love collide in Korea cinema, often with truly memorable results, and recently I returned to one of the most successful dramas in recent years: Kang Hyeong-cheol's "Sunny - 2010"...More

What is it that has aided in the K-pop and Korean Wave sensation spread so fast? In terms of K-pop, it is no doubt that YouTube has been a key influence in the global success K-pop has seen.
Both Asia-Pacific Google/YouTube representatives made a visit to Korea this summer and held an invitation only forum for SNS professionals. At the forum, YouTube representatives stated how they were shocked as to how popular K-pop was on their channels. Low and behold, a few months later, earlier this month on November 7, Google made the official announcement to make an official K-pop channel that will essentially hub together all the K-pop related channels on YouTube, to be in one spot...More

OCN's "God's Quiz"
Up until a few months ago, when I first caught sight of "God's Quiz", I was not aware of cable channels in South Korea. Not even of their existence, let alone the works they produce. Which meant that the aforementioned series came as quite a shock to me. For one thing, it wasn't a melodrama, a romantic comedy or a sageuk, as it feels that public television does not know any other genres, save for the occasional exceptions. Or at least they don't get promoted as well as the same ol' same ol'.
This was a crime/medical series. Not only that, but it didn't feature a cast comprised of hot men and women sporting the most expensive and fancy clothes and being the center of everything simply because of their looks...More

Founded ahead of the year's end, general service channels have been announcing star-studded casts one after another. Recruiting stars is the first stage of attracting attention to newly founded channels, which is a prerequisite for success. Because of this, expending resources to establish star-recruitment power is a natural move.
First target: star broadcast TV producer
General service channels' first targets were broadcast television entertainment producers. Given the enormous amount of know-how required to create a drama, this meant battling with broadcasters over a short period of time and securing the production talent that would give them the best chance for a successful launch...More

Announcer Song Jee-seon killed herself by jumping from her apartment building in southern Seoul, police said Monday. The suicide comes about two weeks after she posted messages implying suicide on her Twitter account.
According to police, the 30-year-old announcer at MBC Sports Plus was found dead outside her studio apartment in Seocho-dong around 1:46 p.m. Rescuers of the National 119 Rescue Services transferred her to a nearby hospital, but she was declared dead on arrival.
An apartment guard who found the body said he heard a thud and found Song bleeding on the ground of the outside parking lot. The window of her home on the 19th floor was open, and police suspect she killed herself by jumping from the apartment.
On May 7, the cable channel announcer hinted at suicide by saying on her Twitter, "Please give me strength if you can't take me. It is so painful. I took three sleeping pills", and "God, please help me. I was going to jump but was frightened. I was to hang myself but it hurt. I said good...More

Thanks for staying with us.
The Korean wave, or Hallyu, has been hitting all parts of the globe from Southeast Asia to the Middle East to Europe.
And Arirang TV has been delivering the most up-to-date news of Korean stars to overseas fans.
And this Sunday, April 10th that is, marks the 15th anniversary of Arirang TV.
To thank the viewers around the globe, we thought it would be nice to meet up with some of the viewers ourselves.
Reporter Hwang Sung-hee just returned from Nepal after meeting with some of the fans there and she joins us in the studio now.
[Reporter : ] Namaste, Sean, Conn-young. How was your trip[Reporter : ] It was great.
I just got back from Nepal only a few hours ago, and I miss it already.
You would think that Nepal would be very different from Korea in terms of its culture and tradition, and while that may be true, I felt at home in Kathmandu because I found so many traces of Korea there.
In even the most rural parts of the city, there were stores selling Korean movies and dramas.
That's very nice to hear.
And we hear that there are also many Arirang viewers in Kathmandu
[Reporter : ] Right.
One of the main reasons behind my trip was to meet up with viewers of Arirang TV in Nepal in celebration of our 15th anniversary.
A majority of Nepal's younger population is crazy about Korea's pop culture, watching almost all Korean dramas and movies and even dressing like Korean celebrities.
And most of them are avid viewers of Arirang TV as they say they can get the latest news on their favorite stars.
But don't get me wrong, because the channel seemed to be enjoyed by all age groups.
Why don't we take a look.

Chuseok is the time for migrating home en masse, or for couch potatoes, the perfect time to camp out in front of the screen. TV networks are offering a colorful array of programs for the big holiday and travelers can even tune into fun programs en route through IPTV, to make the long road trip less grueling.
Major television networks KBS, MBC, SBS, EBS and the English channel Arirang TV are gearing up for one of the biggest holidays in Korea, albeit amid lingering doubts whether they are properly prepared for the annual occasion. Some have, while others simply repackaged their shows into a bundle of Chuseok specials.

4 newspapers in all-or-nothing fight for cable channel licenses to secure next business model
By Kim Tong-hyung
President Lee Myung-bak is aiming for a drastic change in the current mass media structure in two ways ― the creation of mega-media groups encompassing newspapers and television channels and the privatization of KBS and MBC.
For whatever reason Lee is determined and one of the most considerable changes is on the horizon ― picking winners among the established newspaper companies to establish two new "comprehensive" TV channels.
Although there are pros and cons regarding the profitability of such new channels, three big newspapers ― Chosun, Joongang and Donga all controlled by a major stakeholder ― as well as Maeil Business Daily hope that this opportunity will provide them with a new business model that will take them beyond what is widely seen as the impending demise of print news media.
The government has been pushing an ambitious plan to deregulate the media industry during the past two years, eliminating the traditional ban on media cross-ownership, which prevented a single company from owning both a newspaper and a television station.
The ownership restrictions involving television stations were eased to lure bigger companies to invest in the broadcasting sector. Previously, only companies with less than 3 trillion won (about $2.6 billion) in assets were able to own television news channels, but the revision of the broadcasting law last year raised the ceiling to 10 trillion won.
Critics are concerned that the compromised diversity in media ownership could hurt discourse, especially when they see the line between profit and reporting becoming blurry at traditional news organizations in a tightening advertising market.
In response, government officials maintain that deregulation is critical for the growth of the media industry and to enable the creation of globally-competitive companies that could hold their own against the likes of Disney and Fox.
But it doesn't appear that Korea will be getting its own Rupert Murdoch anytime soon, as the country's corporate heavyweights don't seem convinced that a full-blown television operation could turn into a golden goose.
The Korea Communications Commission (KCC), the country's converged regulator for broadcasting and telecommunications, will allocate an undetermined number of licenses for new cable channels, allowing them to provide comprehensive programming including news and entertainment, by the end of the y...More

In the last few years, Korean films, TV dramas and pop music have become immensely popular abroad, a phenomenon known as the Korean Wave. This is the 33rd in a series of essays by a select group of scholars and journalists looking at the spread of Korean pop culture in Southeast Asian countries and beyond. - Ed.
Following is an email interview with Tom Larsen, president of YA Entertainment, the largest distributor of Korean TV drama DVDs in the United States. - Ed.
The Korea Herald: What is the current market position of Korean TV dramas in the U.S. market? How are they perceived in comparison with mainstream U.S., Chinese and Japanese programming?
Tom Larsen: Like most other TV programming from international markets, Korean TV dramas are generally considered a specialty entertainment niche here in the United States. Having said that, the popularity of Korean TV dramas in the United States has grown dramatically over the past five years. Korean TV dramas are now widely recognized in the United States as a leading entertainment option within the growing Asian entertainment category.
Several major U.S. cities now have a "second-tier" TV station which often broadcasts various Korean TV drama programs during primetime hours. Some of these smaller-scale TV stations have recently started to include English subtitles when they broadcast Korean TV dramas. However, the majority of avid Korean TV drama fans usually watch Korean TV dramas on DVD rather than on TV. (These TV stations are relatively few, and their schedules are too unpredictable.) My company, YA Entertainment, has been releasing Korean TV dramas on DVD with English subtitles since 2003. We now have over 60 individual titles in our DVD catalog.
When compared to Chinese and Japanese TV programming, I believe Korean TV dramas are by far the most popular among mainstream Americans. Even in the Chinese-American community, Chinese-language TV stations will air Korean TV dramas dubbed in Mandarin or Cantonese. Korean TV dramas are perceived as higher quality and more entertaining than Chinese TV programming and definitely more accessible than Japanese TV programming.
KH: Which Korean dramas are popular in the United States (in terms of genres, themes, character or title)?
TL: Our best selling titles over the past five years include "Stairway to Heaven
", "Dae Jang Geum
" (Jewel in the Palace), "My Name is Kim Sam-soon
", "Princess Hours
", "All About Eve
", "The Snow Queen
", and "My Girl".
As the list above shows, Americans enjoy all types of Korean TV dramas: love stories, comedies, and historical epics. It's all about the storylines, cast (acting), production values, and soundtracks. If those four core elements are done very well, then it doesn't matter if the TV drama is a comedy or a tragic love story. Americans will like it.
My personal all-time favorites include "Sandglass
", "Glass Slipper
", "All About Eve
", "Save the Last Dance for Me
", "Dae Jang Geum
", and "Love Letter"
Some of the most popular actors include: Bae Yong-joon
, Kim Rae-won
, kwon Sang-woo
, Jang Dong-gun
, Kim Min-joon
, and Lee Byung-hun
The most popular actresses include: Choi Ji-woo
, Lee Da-hae
, Ha Ji-won
, Lee Young-ae
, Son Ye-jin
, Bae Doona
, Kim Ha-neul
and Yoon Eun-hye
KH: Who is watching Korean dramas in the United States? Why do they choose to watch Korean dramas and how do they respond?
TL: We have conducted multiple surveys over the past five years, surveying thousands of Korean TV drama "fans" in the United States. Interestingly, only 5 percent of survey respondents described themselves as "Korean". Therefore, roughly 95 percent of the people purchasing our Korean TV drama DVDs are not of Korean descent. The majority are Caucasian, Japanese-American, Chinese-American, and Filipino-American. And we are also finding strong growth in the Vietnamese and Latino/Hispanic communities.
As for gender, our surveys show that over 65 percent of Korean TV drama fans are female. However, based upon the dozens of e-mails I receive everyday from fans, the breakdown seems to be more like 50 percent male, 50 percent female.
Americans choose to watch Korean TV dramas for many different reasons. Korean TV dramas have many strengths (some of which I describe below), and each strength attracts certain subsets of viewers. More often than not, the response is positive. People describe Korean TV dramas as "addicting", "powerful and engrossing", and "highly entertaining".
Over the past few...More
In the last few years, Korean films, TV dramas and pop music have become immensely popular abroad, a phenomenon known as the Korean Wave. This is the 32nd in a series of essays by a select group of scholars and journalists looking at the spread of Korean pop culture in Southeast Asian countries and beyond. - Ed.
Korea - both North and South - has long been unfamiliar to most Spaniards. Rising tensions between the two Koreas, derived mainly from nuclear development by North Korea, were the only news we heard from Korea. Before that, we knew a little about the Korean War in the 1950s, but did not know the cause of it.
In the 1960s, a famous comic depicting the war led by the "good" Americans against the "bad" communists was published and accepted by the anti-communist regime of Franco. This is how Spanish people of that era remember the Korean War.
But the majority of Spaniards may still have difficulty finding Korea on a world map. High-level visits from the King of Spain, politicians and members of parliament to Korea usually get little attention in the national media. However, Korea appeared on the front page of several major newspapers in Spain only a few months ago when then-President Roh Moo-hyun visited Madrid.
So, it is not surprising that there has not been a great deal of trade relations between Spain and Korea. Spain is the world's eighth-largest economy, while Korea is the 12th. Yet these economic figures are not enough to represent any particular relationship between the two countries, not to mention that our cultures do not have much in common.
Meanwhile, Korean companies chose not to label their products as "Made in Korea", instead veiling them among well-known Japanese products in Spain. This all combined to keep Korea a mystery, except to those few who found the culture interesting.
Building relations with Korea
In 1996, the Autonomous University of Barcelona expanded its number of Korean language classes, which had been developed by the School of Languages of Barcelona years prior. This effort was supported by Samsung, which iinitially helped introduce Korean studies to Spain. Later, Doosan also provided financial support to the UAB to promote Korean activities, in particular enabling the university to establish an exchange program between Korean and Spanish students. These Korea-related activities slowly succeeded in introducing Korea to Spain.
Furthermore, the Barcelona Chamber of Commerce, headed by President Antoni Negre, was one of the early pioneers in promoting business relations between Spain and Korea. Then the Hispanic-Korean bilateral committee was established, and the two countries engaged in various activities in connection with each other.
In 1999, the first Congress of Korean Studies was held by Spanish Korea experts, in Spanish, at the UAB, which included sessions on topics such as Korea in Catalonia. This Congress led to the official launch of Korean studies at the Center for International and Intercultural Studies of the UAB.
The Korea Foundation also played a crucial role in promoting Korea in Spain. By that time, numerous activities regarding Korea had been in place - for example, official coursework for studying the Korean language, economy, politics and history, as well as exhibitions on Korean art and cinema and two symposiums of Spanish sculpture in Korea.
In 2001 and 2003, Gyeonggi province organized the symposiums at a ceramic museum in Ichon. At least 40 Spanish sculptures, along with pieces from Koreans and foreign sculptors were displayed in the so-called Spanish Sculpture Park in Ichon. The open-air surroundings of this park, although affected by ...More

MTV, one of the world's largest and influential television network, has launched "End Exploitation and Trafficking" (EXIT), a global campaign to raise awareness about human trafficking. Along with Thai star Tata Young, Korea's pop singer Rain
has joined in the action as the front man for the Asia Pacific region.
"This is a form of slavery that still exists today, and I don't think enough people are aware of that", said Simon Goff, 30, campaign director for MTV EXIT, told The Korea Times at MTV Korea in central Seoul, Friday.
Individuals are denied their basic human rights and are usually tricked or coerced into prostitution, domestic servitude or other labor, according to the United States Trafficking Victims Protections Act (TVPA). After drugs, it is the second largest illegal trade in the world, and generates about $10 billion every year. Its total market value is around $32 billion.
The U.N. International Labor Organization (ILO) estimates that 2.5 million people worldwide are victims, of which over half live in Asia Pacific. The majority of them are women and children, most of whom are sexually exploited, Goff said.
"It is shocking and sad that the majority of these trafficked and exploited people are women and children. I hope I can be of help to those battling for these people", Rain
was quoted as saying, according to MTV Korea.
Goff explained that the issue "was getting some attention from the media but certainly not directed toward young people… We're the biggest broadcaster in the world so we have the ability to target messages and target our audience, so on a pro-social level it works very well...More

British documentary director Daniel Gordon said that his documentary films don't have opinions, just facts.
Gordon is one of the most noticeable directors in this year's Pusan International Film Festival, which will end on Friday. His work, "A State of Mind", vividly shows the life of the North Korean people through mass calisthenics, a symbol of North Korean collectivism. The film has drawn so much attention that it sold out even before the film festival opened.
Gordon is puzzled by the popularity. He said that he had merely seen, filmed and talked about what actually happens.
Gordon's work, however, presents many scenes that have not been seen in other documentaries about North Korea. His film depicts the everyday life of North Koreans by telling the s...More
