In the last few years, Korean films, TV dramas and pop music have become immensely popular abroad, a phenomenon known as the Korean Wave. This is the 33rd in a series of essays by a select group of scholars and journalists looking at the spread of Korean pop culture in Southeast Asian countries and beyond. - Ed.
Following is an email interview with Tom Larsen, president of YA Entertainment, the largest distributor of Korean TV drama DVDs in the United States. - Ed.
The Korea Herald: What is the current market position of Korean TV dramas in the U.S. market? How are they perceived in comparison with mainstream U.S., Chinese and Japanese programming?
Tom Larsen: Like most other TV programming from international markets, Korean TV dramas are generally considered a specialty entertainment niche here in the United States. Having said that, the popularity of Korean TV dramas in the United States has grown dramatically over the past five years. Korean TV dramas are now widely recogni...

"Korean TV dramas stand a good chance of succeeding in America", said Tom Larsen, the CEO of YA Entertainment, which distributes Korean TV shows in the United States, at a lecture on Korean dramas held recently at the Los Angeles Korea Center. Larsen based his prediction on the high popularity of Korean TV dramas currently airing on U.S. television networks and the growing interest in Korean TV dramas in Hollywood.
YA Entertainment distributes Korean TV dramas with English subtitles to the American market. Larsen has received wide acclaim for leading the Korean TV drama boom in the United States by introducing such popular dramas as "Jewel in the Palace" ("Dae Jang Geum"), "My Name is Kim Sam-soon", "Glass Slipper" and "All About Eve".
Larsen says he first learned about Korea and its culture and studied Korean through Korean TV dramas by reading their scripts. He and those who learned Korean with him have become ardent fans of Korean TV dramas. That's when he decided to introduce...

When President Roh Moo-hyun invited Vietnamese Prime Minister Phan Van Khai and his delegation for a luncheon meeting last September, something unexpected happened. The commotion settled down only after a Korean general promised the actress's autographs for everyone after lunch. The center of attention during the luncheon apparently was not President Roh or Prime Minister Khai, but actress Kim, showing that perhaps the Korea Wave is stronger than diplomacy.

"Low Class Life (下流人生)".
This is the movie that Director Lim Kwon-taek is working on now who has achieved a long-sought desire of the Korean filming industry by winning the Director's Award at the Cannes Film Festival last year with "Chihwaseon (Strokes of Fire)". The movie is his 99th work since his first movie, "Farewell Dooman-gang" in 1961. I met the director at the open set of "Low Class Life" in Puchon Fantastic Studios in Bucheon, Gyeonggi at 5 p.m. on November 14. This is his first interview about his films since he won the Director's Award.

"'ChunHyang', 'Chihwaseon (Strokes of Fire)' and now 'Low Life'... Even they (at the Cannes Film Festival) will get surprised, too. I wonder how they will react".
The movie "Low Life" involves a lifetime story of a scamp who lived throughout the late 1950s and early 1970s. Tae-woong who was closer to his own fist than to a book is the hero ...
