Staff Reporter In the past, original soundtrack albums were just a little extra something that came with a television drama. Now, however, more viewers and drama makers are starting to realize their importance and potential. One of the most popular drama soundtracks lately has been Baek Ji-young's "Is Love a Sin?" for the SBS drama "Princess Ja Myung Go", starring Jeong Ryeo-won and Park Min-yeong. Her sad ballad was made for Jung's character Ja-myung, and although the drama is not faring well in the ratings, the song is soaring in popularity, topping Internet music charts. "We started working on the original soundtrack a year before the actual airing of the drama. We were given the synopsis of the program, and after discussions with the producer, we managed to create music and songs that were a fit for the big budget period drama", Lee Sang-ho, the music producer, told The Korea Times. In the past, drama production companies would work on the album, along...| More

Staff Reporter SBS perhaps could change its name to something that includes "swearing", as it leads a list of major broadcast networks exposed for their increasing use of bad language. The Korea Communications Standards Commission (KCSC), the country's watchdog for television, radio and Web content, said a jump in profanity was found on virtually every network in both the terrestrial and cable field. Viewer complaints have also been rising, it said. Of the 158 complaints submitted to the commission in March, about 70 percent of them were about programs from national networks. There were 17 complaints regarding language standards, the commission said, up from six complaints in the previous month. Many of the viewer complaints were arrowed toward "Temptation of Wife", the immensely popular SBS miniseries starring Jang Seo-hee that allegedly set new highs for Korean television entertainment, or new lows, depending on who one asks. The recently-finished...| More

The heroines of Korean history, who had been tipped to draw huge TV soap audiences this year, are struggling with present-day realities.
SBS drama "Princess Ja Myung Go" only draws about 10 percent ratings and KBS' "The Iron Empress" some 15 percent. One reason may be that they failed to win the hearts of middle-aged men, the bedrock of audiences for historical drama. TNS Media Korea said "The Iron Empress" rated 12.5 percent among men and 11.4 percent among women in their 40s, and "Princess Ja Myung Go" 4 and 6.5 percent. Traditionally, men dominate audiences for historical epics about male figures. "Dae Jo Yeong" rated 19.3 percent among men in their 40s and 15.5 percent among percent women, and "The Great King Sejong" drew 14.5 and 11.3 percent. But while the two disappointing dramas may be alienating core audiences by showing women in traditional men's roles on the battlefield, quality could be another problem. "Ladies of the Palace" depicted women caught up in the politic...| More
"I've never expected to be in a period drama in my life", said actress Jeong Ryeo-won, 28. She makes her debut in a period drama entitled "Princess Ja Myung Go", to air on SBS on Mondays and Tuesdays from March 10.Jeong's role requires her to handle a dagger weighing over two kilograms -- no easy task for the slim actress. However, now she has become used to it and even put on two kilograms. "To help immerse one's self in a period drama, it's important to remain healthy and strong", said Jeong. Some three and a half years after her debut as an actress in MBC soap opera "My Name is Kim Sam-soon", Jeong is about to exercise her charms in a drama. "Princess Ja Myung Go" based on a traditional Korean tale is about a love shared between three people. ...| More
