In the last few years, Korean films, TV dramas and pop music have become immensely popular abroad, a phenomenon known as the Korean Wave. This is the 33rd in a series of essays by a select group of scholars and journalists looking at the spread of Korean pop culture in Southeast Asian countries and beyond. - Ed.

Following is an email interview with Tom Larsen, president of YA Entertainment, the largest distributor of Korean TV drama DVDs in the United States. - Ed.

The Korea Herald: What is the current market position of Korean TV dramas in the U.S. market? How are they perceived in comparison with mainstream U.S., Chinese and Japanese programming?

Tom Larsen: Like most other TV programming from international markets, Korean TV dramas are generally considered a specialty entertainment niche here in the United States. Netizens have chosen actor Hyeon Bin as having the best body.

The community portal site DC Inside, held a survey from the 10th to the 17th about the male star with the best body, and Hyeon Bin was first.

According to the survey directed at netizens, Hyeon Bin received 7563 votes out of 29322 (25.8%). Hyeon Bin showed off his muscular body last year on the drama "The Snow Queen" as a sparring partner for boxers.

Second place was Bae Yong-joon, with 7468 votes (25.5%). Last 2004, he surprised his fans everywhere with a photo album with pictures of his muscular body.

Lee Seon-ho who appeared in 'The Snow Queen' as Kim Jung-Kyu, Hyeon Bin's best friend and prodigy, will transform into Joseon's greatest warrior.

He will be playing General Jang In Hyung who gave up his position despite having the best swordsmanship due to revolutions in the upcoming 10 episode series 'The 8th' which will be aired on Channel CGV in October.

Lee Seon-ho says, "I have been training at action school for more than 5 hours a day for the fighting scenes in the series. I am taking the position of learning from the great seniors that I will be acting with".

Based on the novel 'Wonhaeng' following the eight days of Jung Jo in the midst of revolution will also star Kim Sang-Joon, Park Cheol and others.

Lee Seon-ho who debuted through 'The Snow Queen' also appeared recently in the MBC drama series 'Air City' and various other commercials....

Hyeon Bin who has been gathering attention as a rising Hallyu Star was greeted by 600 or so fans at Haneda Airport on the 9th. He is visiting Japan to appear at the special promotional event for the drama series 'The Snow Queen' which will start airing on the 10th on TV Tokyo.

A press conference was held at the Tokyo International Forum Hall A at 7pm with 150 or press personnel and Director Lee Hyung Min and writiers Kim Eun Hee and Yoon Eun Gyung also were present.

During the press conference, Hyeon Bin spoke of his experience, "I was entitled with a role of great responsibility, but I seemed to have enjoyed the filming with great people. I only ate chicken breast to portray a third class boxer so I now don't eat chicken as much".

Hyeon Bin had actually reduced 7~8kg for the drama series. In a question asking the most memorable scene, he chose the scene where Tae Woong and his friend Sang Ho were drinking. They filmed drinking real alcohol and it had left a lasting impression...

A thousand out of a total of 5,000 tickets to an event preceding the premiere of the TV drama "The Snow Queen" featuring actor Hyeon Bin were sold out in just three minutes. The event will take place May 9 at the Tokyo International Forum.

The remaining 4,000 tickets were sold out soon afterward.

Up to now, actor Bae Yong-joon had been the only actor to have his fan meetings sold out in Japan, which is additional evidence of Hyeon's enormous popularity in that country.

The Japanese media showed great interest in Hyun, with The Mainichi Daily News calling him "a next-generation hallyu star".

The actor's popularity in Japan is expected to soar once "The Snow Queen" goes on the air there on May 10 via TV Tokyo.

Hyeon's upcoming event will also be attended by the production crew of "The Snow Queen" and the band Loveholic, which will sing the drama's original soundtrack. ...
