While many singers are gasping for air amid the economic recession, which lowered revenue from already plunging album sales, some are temporarily leaving their original posts to pursue different careers.
First, came entertainment programs.
Singers Lee Hyo-lee, Yoon Jong-shin and Dae-sung from boy band Big Bang appeared on the SBS program "The Family is Out!", garnering fans and leading the show to become one of the most popular on television during that time slot. Pop duo Country Kkokko members Shin Jung-hwan and Tak Hae-hun have been masters of ceremonies for quite a while, with Tak winning the grand prize at the KBS Entertainment Awards in 2007 and even appearing on the big screen several times.
Now, they are turning toward acting. While not the first time singers have appeared in dramas and commercials, the list previously only included top artists like Lee Hyo-lee ("Three Leafed Clover", 2005), Yoo Jin ("Loving You", 2002) from the now di... |More

"Enjoy One's Calling" is the phrase written on actor Kim Kang-woo's cell phone. "Talented people cannot beat people who know how to enjoy life. I went through hard times when I first started acting. But one day, I realized I was doing something I wanted to do and earning money for it. The point is to take pleasure in what I do ― acting", Kim said in an interview with The Korea Times at a cafe in Samcheong-dong in Seoul, Monday.
Kim, 29, debuted through "The Coast Guard" (2002), directed by Kim Ki-duk, when he was a senior at Chung-Ang University. "The only role I could get without any acting experience was a soldier", said Kim.
He was then noticed when he played Mu-cheol in the MBC drama "Breathless - Drama" (2003) and starred in SBS's "Three Leafed Clover" (2005). Kim has been known as "Mr. Right" since then for the honest and diligent characters he played. "It's funny. I didn't know that I had that kind of sincere image in me", he said.

It might not have been a composer that these young women needed. They might have needed more: a savior. Lee Hyo-lee and her embarrassingly low TV ratings in "Three Leafed Clover"; Baek Ji-young's "Miss B Video" scandal; IVY struggling to shed her sex-symbol image; and Yangpa making a comeback after her 6-year hiatus.
These singers did not just need a new song - they needed to break free of a crisis, a dilemma, and all their footsteps led them towards one direction, towards musical composer and lyricist Park Geun-tae (35).
It is not just music he prepares for his clients. Park configures the "wardrobe" that will become the basis of the artist's general image. Take for instance, Lee Hyo-lee's commercial-based music "Anymotion" in 2005, or singer Baek Ji-young's 2006 ballad, "Love You Not". Already this year there are two more, "Seductive Sonata" sung by IVY and "Love… What's That" by Yangpa.
Though it is hard to determine exactly when it happened, Park Geun-tae is now known as t... |More

| Se7en Goes Back to Music (Source) |

K-pop star Se7en's acting debut has been a disappointment to many fans, as shown by the lackluster ratings for his drama "Kung S" (Palace S - "Prince Hours").
Se7en will try to win back his fans with what he does best: singing and dancing. He will hold a solo concert "747 _ Se7en for 2007" on April 7 at Olympic Park Gymnastics Stadium in southern Seoul.
The concert will be a test of Se7en's popularity, which may have been affected by the poor reviews of his acting and the low ratings of "Kung S" ("Prince Hours"). The drama made its debut in January with ratings of 15.3 percent but since then has averaged less than 10 percent.
Some have even compared Se7en to Lee Hyo-lee, a K-pop star who failed to make the transition to acting. Lee's acting debut in "Three Leafed Clover" also had low ratings.
"Kung S" ("Prince Hours") may have suffered from high expectations, especially since the original "Kung" ("Princess Hours")was such a big h... |More

| Is Sexy Girl Lee Hyo-lee Facing an Image Crisis? (Source) |
2007/01/02 |
Sex icon Lee Hyo-lee's latest acting achievements will soon be beamed into our living rooms in a short series that comes some two years after her appearance in the disappointing SBS drama "Three Leafed Clover". Of most interest in the singer's return to the screen is a possible change to her image. When you think about it, the star has already been given the tacit go-ahead for an image revamp.
After making her debut with the group Fin.K.L, her raunchy image heightened with every studio release, culminating in the launch of her solo album in 2003. In her first solo single, "10 Minutes" she was the epitome of provocative sexiness. A weekly magazine picked her as the most influential entertainer in Korea later that year.
After her unexpected rise to the top, she took some time out to make professional changes. First, she sought to broaden her skills in front of the camera, and second, she wanted to create a new image. But the new image she created for herself in the "Three Leafed Cl... |More
