By Park Si-sooStaff Reporter Actor Park Shin-yang won his lawsuit against a drama production firm for a performance fee. The Seoul Central District Court ruled Friday that the drama production agency should pay 386 million won ($306,700) to Park for starring in four additional episodes of the hit TV drama "War of Money" in 2007. The 41-year-old filed the suit against the agency last December after it refused to pay the contracted fee for the additional episodes. The agency alleged Park tried to capitalize on the drama's high popularity by asking for too much money. It also claimed the fee he had received per regular episode be equally applied to the additional episodes because they are part of the drama. In 2006, Park signed a contract with the company worth 45 million won per episode of the drama, initially made up of 16 episodes. As the drama enjoyed high popularity, the company decided to film four extra episodes. Park agreed to appear in the extra productions in ex...| More

Staff Reporter University student Kim did not start out as an avid fan of Korea's top male group TVXQ. In fact, she didn't like them at all. "They were different and it was hard to understand what they were going for at first", the 19-year-old student, who wished to be identified by her last name, told The Korea Times. But now, she is one of the group's biggest fans, flying out eagerly to Japan to watch them perform at a concert. If you happen to find a crowd of excited teens grouped somewhere taking photos, reaching out for a glance with arms full of presents, it means a star is within the vicinity. In the late '90s, fans were more humble and passive; they would memorize lyrics, follow dance moves and dress up like their favorite stars. But now, they have become more systemized and active, from publishing advertisements on daily newspapers to donating money under the name of their singers and actors. "The Internet has helped a great deal in what fan...| More

Korean soap operas were the pinnacle of the Korean Wave that swept Asia. According to the Korean Broadcasting Institute (KBI), soap operas are still the most popular exported Korean TV program, accounting for 90 percent of TV programs exported in the first half of this year or US$53 million.
However, Korean TV is losing its competitive edge in Japanese and Chinese markets in terms of price and quality. Analysts say that producers' obsession with casting only top stars played against maintaining the quality of Korean soap operas. As a matter of fact, during the heyday of the Korean Wave, investment in lighting, props, stage art and supporting actors and actresses fell. Just six years ago in 2002, top stars were paid only W5 million (US$1=W1,301) per episode. According to a recent record, Song Seung-heon was paid W70 million per episode, Lee Jung-jae W50 million, and Choi Ji-woo W48 million -- showing that their values rose more than 10 times from about five years ago. The Corea Dr...| More
Actress Kang Soo-yeon, who appeared in the 2001 SBS TV drama "Ladies in the Palace", was paid W4 million (US$1=W1,364) to W5 million per episode. Kim Hye-soo who appeared in the 2002 drama "Jang Hee-bin" and Lee Young-ae from the 2003 drama "Jewel in the Palace" ("Dae Jang Geum") received W6 million per episode. That jumped in 2005 to W15 million per episode received by actress Jeon Do-yeon in the SBS drama "Lovers in Prague". By 2006, Ko Hyeon-jeong was being paid W25 million for the MBC drama "Fox, What Are You Doing ?", while in 2007, Kwon Sang-woo got W50 million per episode of the KBS drama "Bad Love". In the MBC drama "East of Eden" currently being shown on MBC, Song Seung-heon receives W70 million per episode.
The dramatic jump in fees for soap opera protagonists was caused by the huge overseas successes enjoyed by dramas "Winter Sonata" and "Jewel in the Palace" ("Dae Jang Geum") in 2004. Increasing numbers of Independent drama production companies began to compete, raising ...| More
