  • [HanCinema's Film Review] Kim Ji-woon's "The Last Stand"

    2013/05/25,
Kim Ji-woon is the man behind some of my favourite South Korean films. In fact, his 2008 tribute to the spaghetti western, "The Good, the Bad, the Weird", was the first Korean film I saw on the big screen. I still get chills thinking about "I Saw the Devil" (2010) and "A Tale of Two Sisters" (2003); but a Hollywood action flick starring the iconic Arnold Schwarzenegger?,...More
  • K-film Remade

    2013/05/10, Source,
"Old Boy". If you've seen just one Korean film, chances are this is it. It's a cult classic, critically acclaimed, and universally loved. Which begs the question: why on earth does it need or deserve to be remade? Regardless of the answer, Spike Lee's Hollywood redoing (starring Josh Brolin, Sharto Copley and Elizabeth Olsen) is highly anticipated by all. Of course, this isn't the first Korean smash to have a USA makeover. Here's a snippet of K- to- Hollywood remakes, with numbers from IMDB and more in-depth opinions from London-based friends as well as K-film experts that were kind enough to reply to our post on a K-cinema forum:,...More
  • Korean Directors in Hollywood

    2013/03/20, Source,
Written by With late 2012 and 2013 seeing Hollywood releases by three of South Korea's biggest directors, does this mark a certain turning point for Korean film makers? Can Korean directors work well within the Hollywood film industry and will these moves into Hollywood encourage international audiences to discover more Korean cinema? Will the overall success of Park Chan-wook's Stoker, Kim Ji-woon's The Last Stand and Bong Joon-ho's still to be released  "Snowpiercer" be the deciding factor for Korean directors considering crossing over to Hollywood? For some years now Hollywood has been remaking original Korean films. The Uninvited (Kim Ji-woon's "A Tale of Two Sisters"), Mirrors (Kim Seong-ho's "Into The Mirror") and The Lake House (Lee Hyeon-seung's "Il Mare") are some examples of remakes which the general public may not have known were based on original Korean films. With Spike Lee set to put his spin on the much loved "Old Boy" (remember all those terrifying Colin Firth as Lee Woo-jin rumours?), Hollywood obviously loves a good Korean film….but is it only when it's been re-done by themselves? This year marks the moment when Korean directors call on Hollywood first hand and Hollywood stops the remakes for a while,...More
  • [HanCinema's Box Office Review] February

    2013/03/02,
Lee Hwan-gyeong's "Miracle in Cell No.7" continued to dominate proceedings this past month, advancing its admissions tally to just over 11 million ($74M). After being released late in January, "Miracle in Cell No.7" came into the charts to beat off Korea's second highest grossing film of the year, Ryoo Seung-wan's espionage thriller "The Berlin File" (6,904,728). Lee Hwan-gyeong's would have completely stolen the show, but was marginally outdone in the first and fourth weeks by "The Berlin File" and, then again, by Park Hoon-joeng-I's "The New World". "The Berlin File" hit the Korean market a week after Lee's big moneymaker, and for that week it did manage to outshine Lee's hit, if only by a small margine. Many were excited to see what Ryoo's latest piece had to offer, as his last film, the gripping 2010 crime thriller "The Unjust", did more than turn a few heads,...More

Eun-joo, the stepmother, welcomes two sisters who come back home after recovering their health, but Su-mi, the elder sister, intentionally avoids her and Su-yeon, the younger sister, shows a smack of fear for her stepmother. On their first night, Su-yeon sneaks in Su-mi's room confessing there is someone in her room and Su-mi sees a ghost of her late mother who hung herself in Su-yeon's closet. Strange things begin to happen since then; a ghost haunts the house and stepmother's birds are poisoned to death. Assuming Su-yeon is behind the inauspicious incidents, the stepmother locks her in the closet, and when Su-mi learns about the cruel punishment, conflict between the stepmother and two sisters gets bitter than ever.
One day, Mu-hyun, the father goes to town and Su-mi finds there is no sign of her younger sister, Su-yeon and Su-mi sports Eun-joo dragging a big bag through the dark corridor leaving bloody stains behind her. Su-mi follows bloody trace of the bag and she confronts with Eun-joo on her way of tracking. They starts to fight vehemently and Su-mi falls down struck by Eun-joo in the end... A while later, Mu-hyun comes back to the house and founds Su-mi fallen on the floor alone and enraged Mu-hyun exclaims that Su-yeon was already dead¡¦ His exclamation awakes a series of memories and hidden secrets buried deep inside of Su-mi...

A well-made horror-thriller movie. It has a uniqe story with an unpredictable ending. I recommend it!
After watching it over and over again, it made sense. Best Korean horror movie I've seen in years.
