Synopsis
A unified team representing the two Koreas competed at the 1991 Chiba International Table Tennis Championships. It was the first such sport team since the division of the Korean peninsula. The unified team won the group competition event, beating the front runner, China. HA Ji-won plays the South Korean table tennis player, HYEON Jeong-hwa and her North Korean counterpart, LEE Bun-hee, is played by BAE Doona. The real-life HYEON Jeong-hwa makes a special appearance as their coach. HA Ji-won, with "Duelist" and "Miracle on 1st Street" under her belt, is a rare breed of actress who can tackle action scenes with finesse. Despite the dismal box office failure of "Sector 7" last summer, HA is still one of the few Korean actresses who can single-handedly provide high box office results. Even though there is a fair amount of attention on the recent development in North Korea, we will have to wait and see whether it will have an impact on the film.

  • Korean films gaining popularity in Vietnam

    2013/01/02, Source,
A Korean film caused a sensation in Vietnam by rising to the second in the country's box office since its release on November 31. "A Werewolf Boy", a Korean film that attracted over 6 million viewers in Korea so far, replaced "Haeundae" (2009), "Runway Cop" (2012), and "Quick" (2011) as the top-grossing Korean film in the Southeast Asian nation. The film starring heartthrob Song Joong-ki was also shown during the first Vietnam-Korean Film Festival in the Vietnamese capital, Hanoi. The festival actually opened on October 18 at the Megastar Crescent Mall in Ho Chi Minh City, before screening in the capital between December 6 and 8,...More
  • [HanCinema's Film Talk] Facing the future in Cloud Atlas's 'Neo-Seoul'

    2012/11/17,
"Cloud Atlas" received a 10-minute standing ovation at its premiere at the 2012 Toronto International Film Festival, but unfortunately also only managed to gross $10,000,000 during its opening weekend in the U.S. However, sharper analysts are cautioning calling this one a flop too soon, as the results from foreign markets are not yet in. Transnational funding (around a majestic $100,000,000 in fact) has ensured that the film's success is spread over (and given the appropriate level of attention in) international markets. It opened in Russian with 1500 screens (remember that Korea's highest grossing film "The Thieves" opened with 1,073 and went on to claim almost 13 million admissions) and will be released in China close to their New Year. Korea, particularly Seoul, should feel quite invested in the film for a number of reasons. "Cloud Atlas" marks the international debut of the popular Korean actress Bae Doona (who recently starred in "As One" - 2012), and her storyline in "Neo-Seoul" was especially fantastical, as much of the film's budget must have been burned in creating the gorgeous futuristic cityscape of the Korean capital. Indeed "Cloud Atlas" certainly does have the potential for success in Korea, but it is not a sealed deal. Although the film paints a flattering portrait of Korea's iconic mother city, and has a A-list Korean actress on the payroll, criticisms have emerged that threaten the quality of love Koreans may have for the film, and perhaps even the actress herself,...More
