Chuseok Events at Lotte Cinema

Why not enjoy traditional Chuseok games at the theater? Lotte Cinema is offering moviegoers not only the latest films but also games in its multiplex theaters, Sept. 24-26.

Jegichagi is a simple game of kicking a jegi, a feathered ball, with your inner heal, keeping it in the air for as long as you can. Couples can participate in a jegichagi competition and win prizes at Lotte Cinema Avenuel near Myeong-dong.

Korean films line up for Chuseok holiday

The summer season has been dominated by Hollywood blockbusters, but a wide collection of Korean films are lining up for a release during the Chuseok holiday in September.

The holiday, which will effectively last from September 22 to 26, is traditionally one of the busiest times of the year at the local box office. With many big hits having been launched during Chuseok in past years, attention is focusing on which of this year's films may have the potential to break out.

Local distributors CJ Entertainment, Lotte Entertainment, Showbox, and Cinema Service have each lined up a film for release, while Hollywood branch office Fox will also distribute one Korean title.

CJ's selection is "The Happy Life" by director LEE Joon-ik, who has acquired star status in Korea after box office smash "The King and the Clown" and word-of-mouth hit "Radio Star" in 2006. Let's get this straight. The movie "Vampire Cop Ricky" is not what you'd expect. It's about 40 degrees off from what you're imagining, with less laughter and more seriousness.

What makes this movie so disconcerting is that there's a disparity between what viewers want Kim Soo-ro to be, and what he himself aspires to be. So it's not that the movie can't make you laugh, it's that it won't.

Here's the gist of the story: Na Do-yeol, played by Kim Soo-ro, transforms into a vampire only when he's angry or aroused. One day, a cop named Kang (Cheon Ho-jin) who's been a brother to Na, is struck down by villain Tak Moon-su (Son Byeong-ho). Tak has been working for Na to stay undercover. Conflicted, Na decides to go for revenge, but is stopped in his tracks by a bounty hunter (Oh Kwang-rok).

Kwon Sang-woo, Yoo Ji-tae Team Up for Crime Thriller 'Running Wild'

Just hearing the big names starring in a film creates a high expectation of commercial success because of the response of teen fans to those names.

But stars Kwon Sang-woo and Yoo Ji-tae emphasize that their upcoming film "Running Wild (Yasu)" is a serious movie and not just a trendy film relying on their popularity.

"The movie will not appeal to audiences by satisfying trends through the popularity of Kwon and myself", Yoo said Tuesday during a news conference after the preview screening of "Running Wild" at Megabox theater in Seoul. "The movie itself is worth watching because of its own attractions".

As the movie received a rating of over 18, it is now obvious that the film's success will not be decided by teen fans of the two stars but its quality, Yoo added.

Stars of the big screen are increasing their presence on the theater stage.

Yoo Ji-tae, who starred in the film "Antarctic Journal" in 2005 and "Old Boy" in 2003, will perform in "Six out of Sixth (Yukpunui Yuk)" from Dec. 1 to Jan. 1 at Sadari Art Center (02-541-4519) in Taehangno, Seoul. He is also the play's producer.

Yoo, who made his screen debut with the 1998 film "Bye Jun", appeared on stage for the first time last year. In the two-person drama "The Tidal Wave (Haeil)", Yoo played a North Korean Army officer who works with a farmer to protect a village during the Korean War.
